LODGE CLEMENTE AMITIE OF PARIS .
[ COMMUNICATED . ] TO commemorate tho fourth anniversary of tho initiation of tho eminout aud venerated Bro . Littre , tho Lodge Clemente Amitie gave , on tho 8 th of July last , in tho spacious hall of the Grand Orient , a literary and musical festival . This was attended
by a large gathering of the elite of onr Masonic and social circles , presided over by tho M . Em . Bro . de St . Jean , President of tho Council of tho Order , who was supported by many members of tho Council , and a great muster of Venerablos and Foreign and Fronch brethren .
Among the distinguished party wore Bro . General Tiirr , Bro . vvyroubolT , Do Ileredia , Antido Martin , Massicault , Dr . Barrc , Ponlo , Dalsace , Fonssier , Blanchon , Senator Valentin , Senator Oudct , & c . Messrs . Ferdinand de Lessops , Jules do Lesseps , many literary gentlemen and artists , and a good sprinkle of Indies . Tho proceedings woro opened soon after eight o ' clock by some
national music , followed b y tho recoption of a deputation from tho Lodgo Alsaco Lorraine , sister Lodgo to the Clemento Amitic . That deputation was orgauised foe the purpose , of presenting Bro . Littre with tho Medal of the Lodge , as a token of fraternal esteem aud high veneration . Then another deputation was introduced from tho Administrative Committee of the Masonic Orphanage , with tho
object of pnblicly thanking tho Lodgo , and in particular its zealous aud devoted W . Master , for their liberality towards that institution . Bro . Ch . Cousin having announced to the assembly that tho hero of tho / etc was unavoidably absent , unfortunately boing compelled to keep his room , through serious illness , proceeded at onco to read a letter that Bro . Littre had , notwithstanding his sufferings ,
addressed to him for the occasion , a few passages of which I beg leave to quote : — "Dear Brethren , —Three years ago , the Lodgo Clemente Amitio awakened my recollection by celebrating , in my honour , an anniversary festival . The exigencies , then , of impaired health , prevented me from venturing upon tho fatigue of an evening , even that of a
joyful entertainment . However , I resolved to defeat absence , and I told you , in writing , at least what I would have beeu glad to express to you viva voce . To-day my inability to appear anywhere is greater ttill than over . " Pains , not premature of course , for I am now iu extreme old ago , but great and continuous , forbid mo the activity of existenco
and the realities of life , I therefore write to you , dear brethren , as I did on tho former occasion , and with a dolorous hand , yot in bright spirits , and the heart filled with emotion , I pen theso Hues , which I send to represent me . " Among ourselves thero arc some illustrious old men who enjoy , at the same time , the immunity of glory as well as that of old ago , and
who can by that precious favour remain still , in spite of years , gallant and untouched by infirmities . I do not envy them , but cannot help admiring them . Under the daily effects of a vitality that docreases and perverts itself , my circle becomes closer , without cease and for ever , and I get but few moments and little strength , at my disposal . "What better use cau I make of them , on a day like this , than
to offer them as a tribute to you . "In compensation for individual decay , a collective enjoyment has all its price . It is thus that , in tho Eneiad old Mezcnier says to his old horse , whilst leading him to a last battle : —¦ "' We have yet lived long , if to mortal beings there is any lifo that is long . '
"' llmr-be , diu si qua din mortalibns nlla est , Viximus . '" After tendering these excuses and explanations Bro . Littre proceeds to speak of Freemasonry and his Mother Lodgo with well deserved praise and trno filial attachment . Then , recalling to mind that it was in tho Lodge Clemente Amitio that was delivered , in 187 G , by ono of its members , tho first scientific lectnre on tho
question of breaking through the Isthmus of Panama , to create therein a canal , he says , " That it scorns that tho genius of this age has deliberately taken tho task of showing tho immense contrast between great wars and great enterprises , and that , like Jupiter in the Iliad , taking his golden scalo to weigh the destiny of heroes , the presont time undertakes tc demonstrate ; to tho nations the value of the
conquests of wars aud that of the conquests of •labour . Tho learned philosopher dilutes on that gigantic scheme which he considers as being simple in its conception , iaborions iu its execution , aud , above all , bencivceut for ever in its results . " Then ho passes on to the question of a plan fur establishing a College or Masonic Foundation for the special teaching of positive sciences , a project which wns three years ago , at that same timo and place ,
presented and developed to tho Lodge by Br . Wyronboff , and whereby tho exclusive teaching of the six fundamental sciences , viz . —Mathematics , Physique , Chemistry , Biology and Sociology , were to compete with tho Church ' s system or tho State ' s programme of University Education . In such a College Bro . Littre contemplated taking a prominent part ns one of its first Professors . But that cherished ambition of his must be abandoned owing to his advanced age , and persistent ill . health ; he has become the most useless man , aud he can no
