Northern Counties Lodge No , 406 . — Tho regular meeting of this Ledge took place on tho 4 th inst ., at tho Masonio Hall . Mnple-street , Newcastle-nn-Tyne . Tho minntes being confirmed , the ballot was taken for three candidates aud one subscribing member , which proved in each caso successful . The three gentlemen wero then initiated into our Order in a most impressive manner . Three brethren wero passed to the F . C . degree , and one was raised to

tho sublimo degree of Blaster Mason , all three degrees boing perfectly conferred by the W . M . AU routine business being ended , tho Lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to refreshments . The usual Loyal and Masonic toasts were honoured , and soveral complimentary ones recoived hearty responses . Tho

Eoyal Alfred Lodge of Instruction , No . 780—The proceedings nt the meeting on Friday , 29 th ultimo , wero of a very interesting character . It has frequently been remarked that a good dinner makes every gathering pass off well . At the present time wo are perfectly content to accept this aphorism . Wo will even go furl ber , and concede that tho doings at the gathering wo are about to

chronicle were especially interesting . About two years back this Lodgo of Instruction was started , and the meetings have sinco been held most regularly , as is evidenced by the reports which have appeared fr < m time to time in our coloumns . Bro . J . Chambers Roe , a Past Master of the mother Lodge , at all times a sincero and hard-working Mason , was appointed Preceptor , and , under his guidance , tho

younger members of tho Royal Alfred have acquired a knowledge of ritual , and have attainod a capacity for office , that will fit them for any duty they may bo called on to fill in this or any other Lodge . Friday was tho day appointed for the Annual Banquet , and was furtlier mado tho opportunity , by the members , of testifying to Bro . Roe their appreciation of tho kiudness he had always evinced , and of

offering him some tangible recognition for the trouble he had expended . Bro . C . Costelow presided , and was supported by Bro . Walter Goss I . P . M . and W . Gomm , of the mother Lodge , who respectively filled the chairs of Senior and Junior Wardens . There was a largo attendance of members , and Bro . Stanbury—mine host of the Star and Garter—had provided an admirable menn , which was served in

the style so characteristic of this establishment . On the removal of the cloth , the toasts customary on these occasions wore given and duly acknowledged . Bro . Roe proposed the health of tho W . M ,, who was a yonng but very energetic Mason . He had been a most persevering student in tho Lodge of Instruction , and it was gratifying to all who were present to have Bro . Costelow presiding . After the

chairman had expressed his acknowledgments , ho bronght forward what might be termed the toast of the evening— " Prosperity to the Royal Alfred Lodge of Instruction and the health of the Preceptor . " After conveying to Bro . Roe assurances of their appreciation of his zeal , the chairman directed his attention to a splendid clock , on a

marble stand , which the members had requested him to present . Bro . Costelow formally handed over the testimonial to their esteemed Preceptor , amid the cheers of all assembled . The following is the inscription : — Presented to Bro . J . CIIAJIBEKS ROE P . M . 7 S 0 ,

Preceptor of the Royal Alfred Lodge of Instruction , No , 780 , As a mark of the esteem of the Brethren , Who have to acknowledge his zeal and Tender care in imparting to them his Extensive knowledge of the Ritual of the Craft . 29 th Nov . 1878 .

Bro . Roe gracefully acknowledged the honour paid him by the brethren , for what he considered such trifling services . His work had been truly a labour of love , and as the brethren thonght he had been of service to them , the knowledge of it could not but bo

gratifying . Their valuable gift he shonld ever pride , and he trusted it would mark the run of timo for generations in his family and bo esteemed as an heirloom . After other toasts had been disposed of the brethren departed , greatly pleased at tbe successful resnlt of the meeting .

The ceremony of initiation was rehearsed , Bro . Christian

as candidate . Bro . Dallas worked tho 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd sections of tho lecture , assisted by tho brethren . The Audit Committee informed the brethren thoy had examined the accounts of the Lodgo to thi * date , and found the same correct . Bro . Dallas was elected Secretary and Bro . Smyth Treasurer , for the ensuing year . Bro . Carr will preside next Tuesday evening .

Wvlie , who invested and

proclaimed Bro . J . S . White , and requested the brethren to salute him as W . M . The W . M ., with tho assistance of Bro . Wylie , appointed his Officers as follow : —W . J . Marrow I . P . After some business of a private naturo bad been transacted , and the usual preliminaries observed , the Lodgo was called from labour to banquet . Tho spacious and comfortablo hall in which our St . Helen ' s brethren meet has recently undergono complete renovation , and on this occasion everything looked quite smart . Great credit is due to the hostess of tho Fleece Hotel for the great interest she

always evinces for tho comfort and enjoyment of the brethren . Mrs . Taylor prides herself on hor ability to provide a menu which , while it gratifies all , cannot bo excelled for richerche character . Bro . George Broadbridgo P . P . G . D . C . ably directed tho ceremonies of tho evening . The musical brethren ( Capt . Windus , G . Barton , M . Gaskin , H . C . Lockhart , Taylor , accompanied by R . B . Woodward ,

who presided at the piano and organ ) added greatly to the enjoyment . On the removal of the cloth the W . M . gavo tho threo toasts which usually head the list . Bro . Gaskin then sang " The Worthy Mason , " after which W . Bro . White rose to propose the health of their Prov . G . Lord Skelmersdale Deputy G . M . of Englan I , and the Prov . G . Officers past and present . Bro . White had attended a 3

many Prov . G . Lodges as possible , and had been very much edified and pleased on such occasions by the able maimer iu which every , thing was carried out . It must havo been gratifying to all , as it wa 3 to him , to witness such a large attendance at Prov . Grand Lodge as there was recently at Liverpool . He was very grateful so many Prov . Grand Officers had done him the hononr of attending his Lodge .

All must feel it a great distinction to have the worthy Prov . Grand ( Secretary among them . Ho was pleased to say he had visited tho Lodgo before , and they were always glad to welcome him . He united j the name of Bro . Alpass P . G . Sec . with the toast , and felt sure it j needed no further commondation to ensure that brother ' s name being I most cordially received . Thero was a timo when Provincial

Grand Lodgo honoured St . Helens with its meeting , and he hoped tho time was not far distant when they would do so again , Bro . Alpass , in tho course of his reply , gavo the brethren some good advice as to tho means to be pursued when matters wero not quite as j straight as could be wished , and stated that it was mnch better to explain any grievance which might exist privately to the W . M . than

rnn tho risk of causing discord by publicly demonstrating it in opeu Lodge . He congratulated the members on the prosperous condition of their Lodge , and hoped that their balance—closo upon £ 150—wonld be judiciously invested . Ho wonld suggest that they make a grant of ten guineas to each of the three London Charities . This was not an unreasonable sum , but it would be the means of handing

down the names of the present members with credit to those who might , follow , and would be a good example to all who might try to emulate them . The I . P . M . proposed the Army , Navy and Reserve Forces , uniting therowith tho name of Bro . Capt . Windus , which was followed by the musical brethren singing " Comrades in Arms , " in capital style . Bro . Capt . Windus had great pleasure , as an officer

of the Reserve Force , in replying to the toast . At the present time a small portion of onr Army was engaged in a war , the difficulty and danger of which could not be easily realised ; but with the character , istic pluck of onr soldiers , tho ability of our officers , and the full equipment of modern war appliances , ho considered there was no doubt our forces would give a good account of them .

White had worked himself up to the hishest office in Lodge , and by strict attention to his various dnties , efficient working , and courteous bearing , he had gained the love and esteem of all , both in the Lodgo and in every day life . wo * pleased to see him occupy this proud position of W . M . He was . 'lire he would discharge its duties with the same zeal , attention , and efficiency he had those of his previons offices ; he felt that no words could ensure a more hearty welcome to the toast than it was their desire to give . Bro . Barton favoured the brethren by singing " The Pilgrim of Love . " The W . M . in his reply stated that it had been

his aim and endeavour to attend the meetings of tho Lodge regularly , and to performhis duties faithfully . Ho not only attended tho re-/ nlar communications of the Lodge , but derived great pleasnre and advantage from attending the Lodge of Instrnction . Ho wished to impress on tho minds of all the brethren that in order to acquire proficiency in the Craft , they must study , persevere , aud practically

After some business of a private naturo bad been transacted , and the usual preliminaries observed , the Lodgo was called from labour to banquet . Tho spacious and comfortablo hall in which our St . Helen ' s brethren meet has recently undergono complete renovation , and on this occasion everything looked quite smart . Great credit is due to the hostess of tho Fleece Hotel for the great interest she

always evinces for tho comfort and enjoyment of the brethren . Mrs . Taylor prides herself on hor ability to provide a menu which , while it gratifies all , cannot bo excelled for richerche character . Bro . George Broadbridgo P . P . G . D . C . ably directed tho ceremonies of tho evening . The musical brethren ( Capt . Windus , G . Barton , M . Gaskin , H . C . Lockhart , Taylor , accompanied by R . B . Woodward ,

who presided at the piano and organ ) added greatly to the enjoyment . On the removal of the cloth the W . M . gavo tho threo toasts which usually head the list . Bro . Gaskin then sang " The Worthy Mason , " after which W . Bro . White rose to propose the health of their Prov . G . Lord Skelmersdale Deputy G . M . of Englan I , and the Prov . G . Officers past and present . Bro . White had attended a 3

many Prov . G . Lodges as possible , and had been very much edified and pleased on such occasions by the able maimer iu which every , thing was carried out . It must havo been gratifying to all , as it wa 3 to him , to witness such a large attendance at Prov . Grand Lodge as there was recently at Liverpool . He was very grateful so many Prov . Grand Officers had done him the hononr of attending his Lodge .

All must feel it a great distinction to have the worthy Prov . Grand ( Secretary among them . Ho was pleased to say he had visited tho Lodgo before , and they were always glad to welcome him . He united j the name of Bro . Alpass P . G . Sec . with the toast , and felt sure it j needed no further commondation to ensure that brother ' s name being I most cordially received . Grand Lodgo honoured St . Helens with its meeting , and he hoped tho time was not far distant when they would do so again , Bro . Alpass , in tho course of his reply , gavo the brethren some good advice as to tho means to be pursued when matters wero not quite as j straight as could be wished , and stated that it was mnch better to explain any grievance which might exist privately to the W . M . than

He congratulated the members on the prosperous condition of their Lodge , and hoped that their balance—closo upon £ 150—wonld be judiciously invested . Ho wonld suggest that they make a grant of ten guineas to each of the three London Charities . This was not an unreasonable sum , but it would be the means of handing

down the names of the present members with credit to those who might , follow , and would be a good example to all who might try to emulate them . The I . P . M . proposed the Army , Navy and Reserve Forces , uniting therowith tho name of Bro . Capt . Windus , which was followed by the musical brethren singing " Comrades in Arms , " in capital style . Bro . Capt . Windus had great pleasure , as an officer

of the Reserve Force , in replying to the toast . At the present time a small portion of onr Army was engaged in a war , the difficulty and danger of which could not be easily realised ; but with the character , istic pluck of onr soldiers , tho ability of our officers , and the full equipment of modern war appliances , ho considered there was no doubt our forces would give a good account of them .

his aim and endeavour to attend the meetings of tho Lodge regularly , and to performhis duties faithfully . Ho not only attended tho re-/ nlar communications of the Lodge , but derived great pleasnre and advantage from attending the Lodge of Instrnction . Ho wished to impress on tho minds of all the brethren that in order to acquire proficiency in the Craft , they must study , persevere , aud practically
