— : o : — LORD CARNARVON'S MARRIAGE . To the Editor of THE FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I consider tho proposal of "T . B . W ., " that the approaching marriage of Lord Carnarvon should bo made an opportunity for presenting his Lordship with some token of the appreciation in which his services are held by tho Craft , an excellent one , and one which steps should at once be taken to adopt and carry ont .
I wonld go still further , and susgest that the approaching marriago of H . R . H . theDuko of Connauifht which , it is said , is arranged to tako place early in tho month of February next , should bo mado the occasion for presontinsr his Royal Highness with a similar token . Whether tho Dnko ' s futnro father-in-law , Prince Frederick Charles of Prussia , is or is not a Mason I cannot say , bnt the Prussian Royal
Family , like tho English , has always evinced a deep interest in tho welfare of Freemasonry . Why not then exhibit onr loyalty and our sense of gratitude for England ' s and Prussia ' s Princes doing so much for tho Craft by making tho Duke and his futnre consort some presont ? A committee can soon bo formed , and if tho amount of subscriptiou wero limited to a maximum of say £ 1 , and a minimum
of half-a-crowu—which I think would be preferable to the fixed amount of a crown , a handsome sum might be raised for the purpose . Another Committeo should be appointed with a similarly limited subscription in tho case of Lord Carnarvon ; and I would suggest the appropriation of tho funds so raised in the following manner : Part in pnrchase of a Perpetual Presentation to Girls' or Boys' School , to
bo called tho CARNARVON Perpetual Presentation , and the remainder in the purchase of somo jewel or jewels for presentation to tho future Countess . Similarly , in the caso of the Duko of Connausiht , part in pnrchase of a CoNNAUGnr Perpetual Presentation to Boys' or Girls ' School—caro being taken that it shall be to that one of tbe Schools which does not receivo tho CARNARVON Presentation—and the rest in
pnrchase of some jowel or jewels for presentation to His Royal Highnoss's brido elect . Why , dear Sir aud Brother , should you not at once take steps with a view to inaugurate tho two subscriptions ? A small working com . mitteo wonld do tho work speedily , and a larger ornamental committee would lend tho necessary eclat to the proceedings .

To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND B ROTHER , — " T . B . W . ' s" suggestion in last week ' s issue , to present our Pro Grand Master with a " tangiblo token " upon his marriage , is one that will , I venture to submit , commend itself to the Craft generally , as an opportune moment , to pay a
graceful tribute to his worth as a Statesman , and as a Brother held in high estimation by Masons . Your correspondent ' s view as to subscription and banquet is worth consideration , if a committee were formed to carry out bis idea . I am a stranger to him nnd the Pi-o Grand Master , but am willing to contribute and assist . I am , faithfully yours , 2 nd December 1378 . J . W . 1563 .

THE " OFF NIGHT " AT THE TRANQUILLITY LODGE , No . 185 .
To the Editor of the FREEMASON s CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —Tt is not right that a virtUB should bo assumed if not possessed ; therefore , to allay any misapprehension that may have arisen out of the conflicting statements , I may state that tho cost of tho supper ( ro Tranquillity 185 ) , on tbo 18 th ult ., was ; C 1112 s Gd for thirty-fivo brethren , equal to Gs 7-Jd per head . I think this rather an extravagant sum for a supper !!
I feel confident many of the brethren do not expend more than this sum for a week's dining ; hence it ia distasteful to mo to hear remarks snch as " Only a supper ! if I had known it , I would not have come . " "Are wo to have Champagne with our supper ? " I can't drink beer , I must have claret ! " '' Bro . Treasurer , order me a little sherry ? " " Cannot I have a little Scotch whiskey ? " and so on , ad nauseam . This , dear Bro . Editor is distasteful to—ONE WHO KNOWS .
To the Editor of the FREEMASON s CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —The discrepancy in the reports of FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE and Sunday Times , anent the " Off Night" of Tranquillity Lodge , No . 1 S 5 , which eo much tickled the fancy of " OLD
FILE , may be explained by the tact that the reporter of the Sunday Times evidently drew his ideas of what took place from reminiscences of the glorious past , while the report in yonr columns is a veracious account of the affair , a 3 witnessed by the bodily presetco of your REPORTER .
