of the connection formerly existing between Pennsylvania and the * G . Lodge ( Ancients ) of Eiuhmd . This severance was resolved upou on 2 Gth Sfptember 178 ;! , and appears to havo been thought worthy of comment iu tbo columns of tho Pennsylvania Gazette of tho 4 th October following . Tho comments are made in tho greatest courtesy toward British Masons . Having pointod ont that the Masonic

separation naturally follows tho political , and that " it would be as improper as absurd that we should again yield au obedience to her wild , extravagaut claims of power , as that Lodges of this Empire should bo subservient to jurisdictions from abroad , " tho writor g 09 s on to say , " But notwithstanding our Masonic depondonco on Great Britain is now no moro , yet those fino-spun cords of lovo and affection , by which the

Fratoruity are drawn together , will no doubt ever induce them .... as a band of Brothers connected by the dearest ties .... to cultivate tho most social intercourses with each other . The means of this happy cultivation and improvement will probably be the frequent subject of our best and most serious disquisitions . We shall endoavour to hold forth every engaging allurement , that tho members of the British G .

Lodgo may approach and apply their elegant wonder-working fingers to finish the beauties of so well ordered a dome in this new empire , and make this favourite land what we really wish , tho distinguished residence , tho last best rotreat of heaven-born Masonry . " The severance was also ordered to bo notified to tho English Grand Lodge aforesaid , in a letter bidding farewell to the latter . Accordingly , nt

the adjourned Communication held ou tho lGth October 17 SG , the draft of tho said order was submitted and uuauimonsly approved , nnd the first step rendered necessary by this act of Masonic independence was token , namely , the preparation and approval of a form of Warrant to be issnod to its subordinate Lodges , by the new Grand Lodge . At tho same time a eircnlar letter was ordered to be written and

forwarded to the different daughter Lodges announcing the erection of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania into a Grand Lodge , and calling upon them to surrender their old Warrants in return for new ones , to bo issued to them free of expense . At au extra Grand Lodge held on 2 nd December , it was resolved to eclobrato St . Johu's Day

by attending Divine Service in one of the City Churches , and a Committee was entrusted with the preparation of the arrangements . On the 18 th December it was announced that tho service wonld be held in St . Paul ' s Church , and that the Rev . Mr . Pilmore had consented to preach tho sermon . At the same meeting a letter was read from Lodge No . 7 sotting forth that thoy , w ith Lodges Nos . 6 ,

1 / , 19 , 29 , and 37 ( held at Somerset , Maryland ) , had met and declared and constituted themselves an independent and Grand Lodge—that of Maryland . A committee wa 3 appointed to reply to this letter . At an extra Grand Lodge on the 2 nd January 1787 , the thanks of the meeting wero voted unanimously to tho Rev . Mr . Pilmore for his sermon , and to Rev . Dr . Magaw for his

prayer on St . John ' s Day , and a request for a copy of each with a view to their being printed was also made , while committees were appointed to distritmto the stuns collected among tho distressed prisoners iu gaol and among distressed brethreu . Bro . Adcook was shortly afterwards re-elected Grand Master , Br . Jonathan Bayard Smith being appointed his Deputy , while Bros . Joseph Dean ,

Geo . Ord , Gavin Hamilton , and Asheton Humphreys were elected to the offices of Grand Senior Warden , Grand Junior Warden , Grand Treasurer , and Grand Secretary respectively . Grand Deacons were next appointed , and the Grand Master proclaimed , after which his Deputy installed tho other principal officers . On motion duly made and seconded , a Bro . Wm . Williams , a Master M ison , was passed to

the chair with tho usual ceremonies . Ou the 13 th January , the Grand Lodge met for the purpose of constituting the new Lodge No . 19 , for which a warrant had previously beeu ordered to bo issued , and tho W . M . aud Wardens wero installed . At the Quarterly Communication on 26 th March , the Secretary was instructed to call npon tbe late officers of vacant Lodges to deliver their books , papers ,

jewels , aud furniture to tho Graud Lodge , and to send copies of the sermon and prayer to each Lodge in tho jurisdiction , as weil as to every Grand Lodge in tho United States . The Secretary was also ordered to inform the latter of tho declaration of independence by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania and to send copies of the Byelaws aud Constitutions . There are two other items of interest

recorded at this meeting , namely , that the Treasurer was ordered to buy for the uso of Grand Lodge every book which appeared iuteresting on Masonry , as well as a ticket iu the lottery . At the Quarterly Communication in June it was announced that the ticket had been purchased aud drawn blank . At this meeting the Lodges in arrear of dues were called upon to pay as early as possible , and it was

resolved that as soon as tho Grand Lodge funds would permit , it should subscribe to the Philadelphia Infirmary for the rolief of sick persons . A resolution directing that the Grand Master and Deputy Grand Master should present a copy of tho Constitutions to General Washington is the last minute recorded of this meeting . In September there would appear to have been no meeting—at all eveuts

there aro no minutes of one . We pass thoreforo to tho Communication iu December whou , inter alia , it was resolved to appoint a committee with a view to procuring a room iu the Philosophical Hall , then br . ilding , f ,- Hie nae of the Grand Lodge and its subordinate Lodges . The election of Grand Officers was then proccc ' - -KI with , Bro . Adcuck beiug re-elected G . M ., and Bro . Jon . B . Smith re-appointed his

JJepnty . Steps were likewise taken to relieve tho Grand Tyler in his preseut distresses , and also generally for the relief of distressed brethren , it being recommended to the several Lodges to open subscriptions for the latter . The minutes close with an order to the Graud Secretary to convouo tbe members of Lodge No . 2 , which had

declined its meetings tor some time , with a view to considering anil ameliorating its position . The usual installation of Graud Officers ou St . John ' s Day was not fully carried out , as the Grand Master wat unable to be present , but this was done on tbo 1 st January 178 S , when also a motion was carried that tho stuns snbscribcd towards building u home for Grand Lodgo on a plot of ground given by Bro . Jos . Dean , G . S . Warden , should be reported at the next meet-

ing , and also that plans for the said buildiug should bo submitted at the same timo . Beyond , however , a similar motio i at tho Juno Grand Lodge , nothing was done for some time , but in Deccmberof the samo year arrangements wero ordered for raising £ -10 or £ 50 towards erecting a temporary building , and on St . John ' s Day orders wero issued for such building to bo proceeded with . Towards the

close of the year the Graud Lodge of Virginia solicited correspondence with that of Pennsylvania , and the inevitable Committee was appointed to draw up an answer . On tho same occasion a change was mado in tho Government of the Craft , and Bro . Adcock having declined re-olection , his Deputy , Bro . J . B . Smith was choseu for the onsuing year , and he and his principal Officers were installed on St . John ' s Day . On 30 th

March 1789 a letter was read from Grand Lodgo or Maryland , enclosing minutes of its proceedings in October of the previous year , and formally annouueiug tho separation from Pennsylvania of the Lodges now comprised in tho said Grand Lndgo of Maryland . Several late members of Lodge , No . 2 , succeeded on 15 th Jane , iu obtaining a Warrant to be called No . 2 , tho attempt to rovivo the original Lodgo

without some such step having apparently proved unsuccessful . An application by certain brethren for a Warrant for a now Lodgo to bo held at Norfolk , Virginia , was declined on the ground that there was a Grand Lodgo already existing in that State . Bro . J . B . Smith was reelected Grand Blaster on 11-th December 1782 , aud retained that high office during the remaining period , to which the minntes recorded in

Part II . relate . At tho adjourned meeting on 18 th December , a Warrant was granted for a Lodge to bo held at Port-au-Prince in tho island of St . Domingo . Tho letter recognising the Grand Lodgo of Maryland was at the same meeting submitted and approved . On the 21 st of the samo month the Grand Master tendored his resignation , but from what we havo said already it is clear that it was not accopted .

On this occasion , and also at tho meeting on thn 2 "> t ! i following , Bro . M . Ewing , G . Secretary , of New Jersey , was miunted as having beeu present as a visitor . At the latter Grand Lodge , a now Secretary , in the pei sm of Bro . Peter Le Barbicr Dnplessi * , w ; is chosen in succession to Bro . Asheton Hnmphroys , whoso lvsig-iatiou tendered more than ouco had ationgth beon accept . - .-d , and to whom the thanks of Grand Lodge were unanimously voted in recognition of hi-i long aud valuable

sorvices to tho Craft in Pennsylvania . At the meeting on tho 28 th December , Bro . M . Ewiug , Grand Secretary of New Jersey , being again present , a communication from thn Grand Lodge of that State was read , inviting corrcspondouco and tho interchange of friendly relations . At tho meeting the next day the Code of Laws and Regulations for the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania were submitted and adopted . ( To be continued . )

The House Surgeon ; or , the Doctor at Home—is the title of a brochure , published by the Accident Insurance Company , of 7 Bank Buildings , E . C . Tho author is the late Alfred Smeo , F . R . S ., Surgeon to the Bank of England , whose namo alone is a gnarauteo that its contents are useful and practical . The illustrations , too , have b- en drawn under his direction , and greatly enhance the value of the little

work . In fact , no more useful book has , in our judgment , been published , and the Accident Insurance Company are entitled to tho thanks of tho public for placing at its disposal , for tho modest charge of sixpence , yet another ( thetenth ) edition of the House Sur eon . which ought to havo a place in every household . It contains instructions for the treatment of accidents and emergencies before the arrival of medical

aid . Thus , if any one burn or won * d himself , or sustain the fracture of a limb , or in the case of possible death from drowning , a referenco to the House Surgeon will show clearly what should be done while medical aid is being sought . The value of such a book is so obvious that wo need hardly add anything to the remarks wo havo

already made . By following the simple instructions it , contains , not only must the sufferer bo benefited , aud tho work of the physician or surgeon , when he does arrive , facilitated , or , it may be , rendered unnecessary , but , in extreme cases , a life , which otherwise might bo sacrificed , may very possibly be saved .

The ceremony of Inslallatiori ' will be rehearsed on Wednesday next , at 7 . 45 p . m ., in the La Tolerance Lodge of Instruction , No . 538 , on which occasion Bro . W . H . Dean P . P . G . S . B . Dorset will preside .
