Helier ) was elected to the office of Treasurer , in succession to the late Bro . G . J . Renouf . o o o

SACKVILLE LODGE , No . 1619 . TH E Installation meeting took placo on Tuesday evening , at the Grown Hotel , East Grinstead . Bro . G . Mitchell installed the now W . M . ( Bro . D . Wood ) , who appointed his Officers . The whole proceedings were of an interesting character 7 and after an enjoyable repast the usual loyal and Craft toasts were

honoured , a good musical programme being sustained by several Brethren . A number of letters were received apologising for nonattendance . Bro . A . M . * Betchley was the recipient of a jewel for his efficient services as Secretary , and the retiring Worshipful Master was presented with a " bar , " in appreciation of his services . o o o

DOROTHY VERNON LODGE , No . 2129 . ON the 4 th inst . was celebrated an important ceremony in connection with Derbyshire Freemasonry , and one which the Dorothy Vernon Lodge , in particular , will regard as a memorable occasion when its history comes to be written , Brother Victor Cavendish , M . P . for West Derbyshire , being Installed into the Master ' s chair of the Lodge , the function being rendered all the more interesting on account of the relationship of that Brother with the Duke of Devonshire , who is Provincial Grand Master of Derbyshire .

By a special dispensation the Lodge , which is ordinarily held at the Town Hall , Bakewell , was held at Chatsworth House , and although His Grace , for obvious reasons , was not among those present , the attendance may fairly be described as one of the most numerous and influential ever held in the whole Province .

The Grand Lodge of England was represented by Bro . W . H . Marsden and others , and almost overy Lodge in Derbyshire was also represented , whilst not a few of the visitors hailed from Sheffield , Manchester and Nottingham . The grand dining hall was utilised as the Lodge room , the sculpture room and Library adjoining being also reserved for the Masonic guests , much to tho disappointment of those of the general public who were thus debarred the privilege of inspecting those interesting chambers .

The ceremony of Installation was performed by the retiring W . M . ( Bro . Stanley Orme ) , who was assisted by Bro . Dr . Fentem I . P . M . P . G . Supt . of Works , W . H . Marsden P . M . P . P . S . G . W ., John H . Orme P . M . P . P . J . G . W . and C . H . Glossop P . M . The newly-elected W . M . duly appointed and invested his Officers .

During the ceremony , which was impressive , Bro . J . Melrose , of Derby , rendered the anthem , " Behold how good and joyful , " to the _ accompaniment of Bro . W . L . Dodd , also of Derby . The business of the Lodge being ended , tho Brethren , through the hospitality of the Duke , were entertained to ligh refreshments in

the sculpture room | and after passing through the hands of the photographer , who " took " the party on the terrace , with Bro . Victor Cavendish , M . P ., as tho central figure , they were driven in brakes to the Town Hall , Bakewell , where the annual banquet was served . Bro . Cavendish presided , and the usual Masonic toast list was gone through . o o o

Monday , 3 rd inst ., under the presidency of Bro . Charles Lee W . M ., who was supported by Bros . J . Carter S . W ., R . Bignold J . W ., M . Tuck M . O ., Hoso S . O ., Saunders J . O ., Vincent A . G . D . C . Treas ., C . Peelman P . G . I . G . Sec , Vincent acting S . D ., Axford G . Steward acting J . D ., Robinson I . G ., Gregory P . M . P . G . Steward , T . C . The Lodge having been opened and the minutes confirmed Bro . S . Dancezger was advanced to the degree of Mark Master in an admirable manner by the W . M . Bro . Lee , who afterwards installed Bro . J . Carter as his successor in the chair , performing this latter ceremony in a most impressive manner , reflecting the highest credit on himself , as evidencing careful study and training so as to make himself proficient in the work of the Degree and the Installation of Master .

The new Master regularly invested his Officers , and subsequently presented to his predecessor a beautiful Past Master's jewel which had been voted by the Lodge , in recognition of the valuable and efficient services rendered during the past year . No Master had , or could have done more for the Lodge than Bro . Lee , who had been

both constant and punctual in his attendance , as well as perfect in his working . His great aim had been to maintain the reputation of the Panmure Mark Lodge , and in this he had been eminently successful . They hoped he would be amongst them for many years yet to come .

Bro . Lee thanked the Master and Brethren in few but very earnest words , and the business of the meeting was shortly afterwards brought to a conclusion by the closing of the Mark Lodge . A Royal Ark Mariners' Lodgo was then opened , with Bro . Lee as W . C . N ., J . Carter J ., Axford P . C . N . S ., G . Gregory P . C . N . Treas ., C . Pulman P . C . N . Sec , T . C . Edmonds P . C . N ., Vincent P . C . N . acting Deacon , Robinson , Hawkins , Saunders . Visitors : Bros . Mo Dowell and Grubb .

The minutes having been confirmed Brother Dancezger was elevated to the R . A . Mariners Dogree . Bro . J . Carter was olected W . C . N , for the ensuing year , and then the Lodge was closed . The Brethren adjourned to banquet at tho Holborn Restaurant , after which the usual toasts wero honoured , those of the Queen , the Grand Master , and the Grand Officers being well received .

Bro . Lee I . P . M . proposed the health of the Master , expressing the pleasure it gave him and the Brethren generally to see Brother Carter , their old friend , in so distinguished a position . They were convinced that under his guidance the Lodge would go on and prosper .

The W . M . thanked Bro . Lee and the others present for their good wishes , and assured them he would do all that lay in his power to follow so bright an example as had been set by their Immediate Past Master , Bro . Lee . The Master , in proposing the health of the Installing Officer ,

said he was personally deeply indebted to Bro . Lee , while the Brethren generally fully appreciated all he had done to further the interests and reputation of their Lodge . They had had many very efficient rulers in the Panmure Lodge , but none could have done more for it than their Immediate Past Master .

Bro . Lee , in response , expressed the great pleasure he felt in the hearty reception that had been accorded the toast of his health . As Master of the Lodge he had had but one ambition—to do the work well and to instal his successor in a manner that would meet their approbation . If he had succeeded and had secured their satisfaction he had been well and amply repaid .

The toast of the Advancee and that of the Past Masters followed , while in response to that of the Visitors Bro . McDowell expressed the great pleasure he had experienced in being at the Lodge . He had been especially gratified at seeing such excellent

working , and he fully endorsed the remarks that had fallen from the Past Masters on this subject . The kindly reception he had received from the Brethren and the kindness of his old friend Bro . P . M . Gregory in inviting him had been a continuous source of pleasure to him .

Bro . Bignold replied for the Officers , and assured the Master that one and all of the Brethren included in this toast would do all that was possible to make his year of office both happy and prosperous—and at the same time keep up the good old reputation of the Panmure Mark Lodge . The Tyler's toast concluded a happy and successful meeting .

THOSE of us who live in the older communities do not realise the weight of the burden borne by the Fraternity in newly settled countries , in responding to calls for relief of distressed sojourners , and do not admit that said burden is a complete excuse for an untenable position concerning reimbursement of such relief . —
