were listened to with great attention , and tho toast was enthnsiastically received . The W . M . in tho courso of his reply said the chair of AV . M . was a proud position , and ono to which every Mason who took a living interest in tho science should aspire . The study of Masonry daily revealed fresh charms to those who investigated its mysteries , and without study it was impossible to appreciate its
excellencies . It would bo his aim as the AV . M . of tho Lodge to excite in tho minds of its members a desire to regard Masonry as something moro than a pleasant medium of friendly communication , so thafc in that old legendary birthplace of tho Order in England they might take a high stand as intelligent Masons , and never forget thafc delightful as wero such occasions as the present , thoy had
other and higher aims , the pursuit of which would amply repay them , by intellectually and morally raising them in their tastes and sympathies . Tho W . M . in proposing tho health of tho installing officer , Bro . T . Cooper , said thoy would all deeply regret the cause of tho absn'c i , f their old friend aud brother , but severe illness had made it quite impossible for him to be present . Ho was , however ,
happily recovering , and had desired hia deepest regrets and kindest wishes to be expressed to tho Lodgo . Tho toast was received with the utmost cordiality . Bro . S . B . Ellis P . M . AVentworth Sheffield gavo Prosperity to the Eboracum Lodge , heartily congratulating tho brethren upon the great success which had attended their efforts , and expressing tho belief that tho establishment of tho Lodgo had been of very
great service to Masonry in York . Tho W . M . in reply alluded to tho early difficulties attending the formation of tho Lodge , but said that thoy could afford now to regard with equanimity their former struggles . Thoy had been involved in very heavy and unexpected expenses , but they had on tho other hand met with corresponding success . Tho Lodgo had done well , and especially as
regarded tho Charities . Ifc had been represented afc two of the Festivals , and had subscribed for charitable purposes during its first year nearly £ 80 , a circumstance very unusual with so young a Provincial Lodge . It was their intention to continue to act in tho Masonic and straightforward way in which thoy had begun , and so doing they had no fears for the future . The
W . M . then gavo The Sister Lodges of tho Provinc , saying that whilst their first thoughts should always bo to themselves , they should retain a warm corner for the other Lodges . Thoy must never forget that they were only members of ono vast fraternity , a gigantic organization , " a girdle round about tho earth , " and that success iu one Lodge ought to moan success in the entire Order . A certain kind of
rivalry there should be between Lodges , bufc it should be of a right kind . It prevented stagnation , but it should bo only a friendly strife for perfection in working , in the selection of candidates , in the study of the Eoyal Art and its kindred sciences . Ho would couple with the toast tho name of Bro . S . Maltby P . M . 236 . Bro . Maltby in replying alluded in most kindly terms to the Eboracum Lodge ,
congratulated ifc upon its progress , and trusted that he might be spared to see it flourish and grow for many years to come . Bro . Balmford P . M . P . P . G . O . gave tho health of tho Visiting Brethren , and said that tho Eboracum brethren counted themselves happy in having amongst them so many representatives of other Lodges . Bro . Foster AV . M . 121-8 replied , and tho AV . M . then gave tho health of the
Wardens and Officers . This was responded to by Bro . J . S . Cumberland S . W ., who dwelt upon tho zeal shown by tho members of the Lodge in the support of the chair since the consecration in last year . Bro . C . F . Matier gave tho Masonic Charities , and in a most interesting address sketched out tho history of tho rise and progress of the three Institutions , showing the groat claims they had on tho support
of tho brethren . He also gave a pleasant account of visits paid by him to the Boys' School . Tho speech and toasts were warmly greeted , and responded to by Bro . J . S . Cumberland , who represented the Lodgo at the last Boys' Festival . In his reply he alluded to the step taken by tho Eboracnm Lodge in adding the sum of fonr shillings to each subscription , initiation and joining fee , in
order to form a fund for tho endowing of the chairs of the Lodge in perpetuity , with votes in the Charities . The AV . M . then gavo prosperity to the City of York , and spoke with regret of the absence of thoir Bro . tho Eight ; Hon . the Lord Mayor , who had fully intended being present , bufc at the last moment had been prevented by a close impending domestic affliction . Tho very name of York stirred up iu
the breast of every Mason thoughts of the Craft , associated with tho days of hoar antiquity , when the ancient operative brethren met ; in Lodge in the Crypt of York Minster , and thence emerged into the light of day , to resume thoir handicraft labours , and ( as Mr . Street told them ) sometimes to " scamp " their work . In this respect he hoped the brethren would not follow their pious example . The toast
was generously received and afterwards responded to , in the absence of the Lord Mayor , by Bro . Councillor Eymor . The Tyler ' s toast then brought the formal proceedings to a happy close . Tho toast list was enlivened by a number of songs , by Bros . J . S . Cumberland , Craven , A . T . B . Turner , T . Humphries and P . Pearson , tho
