Our Weekly Budget

way to the Piraeus , has spread consternation among all classes . However , Ave shall hear moro anon . But the most astounding piece of intelligence was to the effect that Russian troops Avere already in Constantinople . On receipt of the news , a Cabinet Council was immediately summoned . A great panic prevailed on the Stock Exchange .

Bro . T . Adams's Annual Ball is announced for tho 2 Gth instant , and will bo held at Willis ' s Rooms , St . James ' s . It is altogether needless to say , with reference to this regularly recurring fete , that Ave sincerely trust Bro . Adams will meet with the success he is so deservedly

entitled to hope for . Bro . Adams has manfully clone his duty in tho station of life in which he moves , and we doubt not his very large circle of friends Avill recognise this fact , ancl support him loyally . By the Avay , there is a triflino- circumstance in connection Avith these annual

festivals of our Avorthy brother Avhich is worth mentioning . In March 1857 , the Freemasons' Magazine , iu recording that Bro . Adams ' s Annual Ball had taken place , that ifc Avas his twenty-first in the regular succession of years , and that it was announced to be his last , expressed , very

naturally , the hope that Bro . Adams AVOUIC ! alter his mind , and commence a fresh series . It even Avcnt so far as to suggest that the second series might consist of t / wentyone likewise . It seldom happens that a Avish is so strictly realised , that we may almost imagine the Avriter of the

paragraph in which it was contained had at the moment the spirit of prophecy strong upon him . Nevertheless , it is a fact that the Ball fixed for the 2 Gth instant Avill be the croAvning one of a second series of tAventy-one Annual Balls given by Bro . Adams . If our excellent friend

continues at this rate , it Avill be our duty to consult Mr . Frank Buckland as to the possibility of " annuals " being turned into " perennials . " One thing we know , that if Bro . Adams should attain the age of Methuselah , he Avill always remain an " evergreen , " ancl this , perhaps , may be at the bottom of the Avhole mystery .

We have pleasure in reproducing the folloAving from tho Western Morning Neios , in reference to the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys : — His Royal Highness tho Dnkeof Connanghfc , Senior Grand Warden , has consented to take tho chair at tho 80 th Annual Festival of this Institntion , tho date of which , and the locality of tho Festival , have

yet to be announced . Under such auspices it is expected that the response from the Craft will be hearty and generous . Since its foundation in 1798 , 1 , 350 boys havo received the benefits of tho Institution , and there are now 186 being clothed , maintained , and educated . The number of applicants , however , increasing yearly , has induced the members to provide additional accommodation for

some twenty-five boys more , at a cost of £ 3 , 500 j and that at the election in April fnlly thirty hoys will be admitted , instead of the usual eight to ten ; this will be a great boon to many , who otherwise would have to wait , probably , for years for admission , if accepted at all . There are seventy-eight candidates for the election ensuing , so that nearly half will be successful . At the election in

October 1877 there wero sixty . seven candidates , and only ten vacancies ; the last successful polling 1 , 736 . The 30 th on the list , according to the number of votes , polled 398 ; hence it may be assumed that some C 50 votes , or probably less , will prove successful in April . No less than eleven candidates will bo elected then , even if they do not poll another vote , as alread y tho votes to their credit are

all above 640 . The highest number ever polled was by Cox , of Plymouth , viz ., 2 , 329 in October 1877 . Tho building having cost nearly £ 50 , 000 , until recently tho invested funds have been generally nil ; now however a beginning has been maclo with £ 8 , 000 . The actual contributions from Devon during the past year have been £ 163 15 s , and from Cornwall £ 121 16 s , making a total of £ 285 lis .

The number of boya in tho Institution from Devon is three , whilst Cornwall is without any in the building at present , one lad being disqualified by reason of age who would otherwise havo been admitted . The average cost of the education , maintenance , and clothing of each boy , exclusive of the office expenses , is generall y about £ 10 annually , and of lato years especially the reports of tho efficiency under each

department have been very encouraging aud satisfactory . The boys leave the Institution when sixteen years of ago , and usually receive a substantial grant of money to assist their advancement iu life . Her Majesty tho Queen is Patron , and is one of tho largest contributors to the Institution , tho Energetic Secretary of which is Mr . Frederick Binckes , Freemasons' Hall , Loudon .

Bro . S . Adams , late manager of tho Royal Music Hall , Holborn , announces his benefit , Avhich will take place at that establishment on the 27 th inst . In addition to the regular company , ho will have the services of several talented artistes . A large attendance of his friends is anticipated .
