ON Friday there was only a brief sitting in the House of Lords , but on Monday , and again the day following , questions were asked by the Government touching various phases of the Eastern crisis , and to these the Earl of Derby , as Foreign Minister , gave suitable replies , so far as he deemed it possible , having due regard to the exigencies of

the public service . But though there has been a calm atmosphere in the House of Lords , there has been far more than the usual amount of excitement in the House of Commons , and the public has watched as narrowly , and with almost as keen an interest as members themselves , the

progress of the yet unfinished debate on the Vote of Credit ; or , rather be it said , on Mr . Forster ' s amendment to the Chancellor of the Exchequer's motion , that the House resolve itself into Committee of Supply for the purpose of voting the sum of six millions . The debate , as our readers are

aware , commenced on Thursday , and on Friday it Avas resumed by Mr . G . 0 . Trevelyan , who opposed the Vote . He was followed by Sir Robert Peel , who spoke with great emphasis in favour of the Government proposal . Towards the latter end of his speech , the right honourable baronet

paid a well-deserved compliment to Mr . Bright for the eloquence he displayed at the time of the Crimean War in opposing a war on behalf of Turkey . Among the other speakers were Mr . Lowe , Mr . P . J . Smyth , Mr . Bourke—the Foreign Under Secretary of State , Mr . Goschen , and Sir

Michael Hicks-Beach , the Earl of Carnarvon ' s successor at tho Colonial Office . The debate was resumed on Monday by Mr . Gladstone in a speech of more than two hours' duration . The right honourable gentleman spr > ko with studied moderation , and suggested that the resolution and the Vote

shonld be withdrawn , and then that bol li s ? ales of the House should unite in passing an Address to the Queen expressive of confidence in her Ministers . Mr .
