DISTRICT GRAND LODGE OF MALTA .
THE Half-yearly Communication of this District Grand Lodge was held , under the banner of the Union of ¦ \ f ilta Lodge , at the Masonic Hall , Valetta , on tho 29 th Afarch . Present : —Right Worshipful Bro . W . Kingston District Grand Master ( on the throne ) , Very Worshipful Rosenbusch District Grand
TJ .. 0 the Rev . E . Deputy Master , R- Wor . W . K . R . Bedford Past Grand Chaplain 0 f ' Eng land , and a very large number of brethren from the various Lodges in the District , a 3 well as numerous •itin 0 " brethren . District Grand Lodge having been opened in due form , the roll of District Grand Officers and
of private Lodges in the District was called . The business 0 n the agenda paper having been disposed of , the District Grand Master appointed and invested his Officers for the ensuing year . A magnificent sword , presented by the District Grand Master in September last , was on this
occasion used for the first time , and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to District Graud Master for his handsome present . Two addresses to the District Grand Master from the Ancient Carthage and William Kingston Lodges ,
at Tunis and Goletta , as well as letters and telegrams from the same part of the District , wishing District Grand Lodo-e a continuance of the prosperity enjoyed by it , were read . The District Grand Master acknowledged the vote
of thanks , the addresses and communications , in a brief but well-chosen speech , and then closed District Grand Lodge in the usual manner .
and 1366 , Secretary Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . The musical arrangements will be under the direction of Bro . F . Rhodes . P . M . No . 1328 P . P . Grand Organist
The ceremonies of installation and consecration will be rehearsed at the Faith Lodge of Instruction , No . 141 , at the Restaurant , 2 Westminster Chambers , Victoria-street , S . W ., on Tuesday , the 10 th May , at seven o'clock precisely , by Bro . James Terry P . P . G . W . Herts , and P . M . 228 , 1278 ,
Surrey . Refreshments will be served at nine o'clock , tickets for which may be had from the Stewards , or of the Honorary Secretary , Bro . A . Bassington P . M . 205 , 41 Chester-square , W . C .
The Lodge of Instruction under the sanction of the Joppa , No . 188 , has for some years past been in abeyance ; many of the members of that distinguished Lodge , however , are taking steps to put it again in working order , and we are informed that in the course of a few days all preliminary arangements will be completed .
It is purely an oversight on our part that we did not last week offer our congratulations to Dr . Morris , Head Master of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and his coadjutors in the educational department , on the success achieved by " Our Boys , " at the Cambridge Examination , Christmas
1880 . Three presented themselves in the Senior Division , and all of them were awarded honours , H . B . Brock being placed in the second class , and A . X . Stephenson and E . L . Price in the third class . Of the sixteen who submitted themselves for examination in the Junior Divisionfive
, took honours in the first class , two in the second , and six in the third ; while the remaining three passed the standard prescribed b y the Examiners . Such a result as this must be eminentl y satisfactory to the authorities of the
Institution and to the Craft generally , and proves that the endeavours of Dr . Morris and his staff to improve the educational standard of the School have been successful beyond measure .
The Mediterranean Mark Lodge , No . 278 , will be consecrated at Gibraltar , on Thursday , 28 th April , by W . Bro . itios J . CORRESPONDENCE .
We do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions of our Correspondents . We cannot undertake to return rejected communications .
THE PROVINCES AND THE CHARITIES .
To the Editor of the FBKEMASON S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BKOTHUU , —If Bio . Taylor will refer to my previous letter , he will find that the tablea only profess to go to the end of 1880—the date to which the official lists are made up . 1 have checked tho lists for Worcestershire agaiD , bnt do not find any mistake ; so I presume that he is alluding to votes in respect of contributions paid
during tho present year , or from brethren not resident in the Province , and who are , therefore , included under some other locality . If either of these suppositions bo correct , I cannot admit his claim . Doubtless most of the Provinces have increased their voting power during the present year , or have friends non-resident , but a moment ' s reflection will show that tho only fair way is not to travel beyond tho
oflicial lists . I am , however , very pleased to hear that Worcestershire is still advancing . In tho last three years it has risen on the Girls' list from 28 th to 8 th , on the Boys' from 25 th to 7 th , and on tho United from 27 th to 9 th .
I may mention that I had credited Lodges , & c , as follows : —Prov . Grand Priory , 2 ; St . Amand Preceptory , 4 ; Richard de Vernon Preceptory , 1 ; St . Dunstan Chapter 18 ° , 2 ; Leohmere Lodge ( Mark ) , 2 . Fraternally yours , A PAST MASTER .
To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I read with much interest the tabular statements which appeared a fortnight since , showing the voting strength of each Province , and the average number of votes per Lodge in respect of our Schools , as well as the number of children who enjoy the benefits thereof . Is it not a pity that something cannot be done in order to place similar information before the Craft in
respect of the Benevolent Institution ? I know the list of subscribers , as published annually , renders tho task a somewhat difficult one , but there are many Provinces which know the voting powers they possess to a single vote . If , then , particulars were obtained from these , it ought not to be very difficult to complete the table for the whole of the Provinces . Fraternally yours , STATIST .
The Attendance Of Past Masters.
THE ATTENDANCE OF PAST MASTERS .
To the Editor of the FREEMASON ' S CHRONICLE . DEAR SIR AND BROTHER , —I see from the report yon published last week of the election meeting of the Sir Hugh Myddelton Lodge , No . lb' 02 , that " there were no Past Masters present , but the work , which consisted of a passing and two raisings , was -excellently rendered . "
Knowing , as I do , several of the members of this Lodge , I am not at all surprised your reporter should have remarked on the excollency of the work , but how was it all the P . M . ' s were absent ? Could not one of them havo found time to put in an appearance ? I hear this is not the first time they have all been away on the same evening ,
but though a very large share of the credit for the manner in which the work is always done belongs , o ? course , to them , they would deserve still better of the Lodge if some among them made a point of being present , especially on election nights . Perhaps the prevalence of the east wind has had the effect of detaining them indoors . Fraternally yours , E . VAN DONOP .
to aid m purchasing a Life-Governorship ( five guineas ) in either the Boys' or Girls' Schools . Should the W . M . decline to accept the interest , subject to making the sum up to five guineas , it is to be offered in turn to the Wardens , and failing their acceptance ( a most unlikely contingency ) , the Lodfje will become the possessor of the privilege , which will form a permanent memorial of a good Mason . The liberality of Bro . Naish is to be recognised by a vote of thanks on vellnm .
A MASONIC GIFT . —Alderman J . Naish , who is the father of the Craft in the city of Winchester , sent on Wednesday evening , by Bro . Stopher P . M . and Treasurer , a deed of gift to the Lodge of Economy , No . 76 , whereby he gives the brethren thirty fully paid-up shares in the Masonic Hall Compauy , which have for some time borne a fair and increasing interest , and he desires the interest on this £ 60 to be thus disposed of . It is first to be offered to tho W . M . of the Lodge
