THE Duke of Edinbnrgh and the Dnke of Connaughfc arrived in London from Osborne on Monday . The Duke of Connaught subsequently left town for Berlin , and the Duke of Edinburgh returned to Eastwell-park , Kent . Prince Leopold arrived at Osborne from London on Wednesday .
Lord Beaconsfield has been suffering from gout , but the attack does not appear to have been serious , and- it is now subsiding . Mr . Gladstone was prevented by a slight indisposition from attending the rent audit at Hawarden on Tuesday .
Earl Granville distributed the prizes to the successful students of the School of Arts at Hanley on Friday . General Grant , ex-President of the United States , and ceived the freedom ot * the city of Dublin on Friday ,
arewas aiterwards entertained at a public banquet by the Lord Mayor of that city . The General has since also visited Belfast and Londonderry , -where he met "with , an equally cordial welcome .
Several new strikes have occurred during the past week . The most important , perhaps , is that of the guards and shunters of goods trains on the Midland Railway , against a small reduction of wages and increased hours of labour together wit . the introduction of the " trip " system
which the men seem to regard with marked aversion . The strike at first threatened to be serious , but the traffic has undergone little interruption , fresh hands being readily obtained to replace the old ones on the new terms .
