AND 232 ND ANNUAL BANQ UET THB annual meeting of this antient and flourishing Lodge was held on tlie last day of tho old year at the Masonic Rooms , Sankey-street , at three o'clock in the afternoon . Tho Lodge was opened in duo form with prayer , when tho minutes of tho previous meeting were read and confirmed . The W . M . then announced the receipt of a letter of request from Bro . S . Schonstadt W . M . of the Lodgo of Israel , No . 1502 , to pass Bro . M . Flatan , of Hamburg , to tho degree of F . C .
Bro . Sec . having read the communications from the W . M . and Sec . of 1502 , and Bro . Flatan having proved lii-t claim to proferment , was entrusted and retired . Tho Lodge was then opened in the second degree , Bro . Flatau admitted and passed by the W . M ., assisted by Bro . D . W . Finney W . M . 1250 . The chair of K . S . was then assumed by Bro . Bowes , at the request of ' the W . M ., when ho presented his
successor , Bro . John Rymer Yonng S . W . W . M . elect , for the benefit of installation . The presentation was duly attended to , and , the first part of the ceremony being completed , tho Lodgo was opened in the third degree , when Bros . Past Masters Armstrong and Finney wero placed respectively in the West and South . All below the degree of Installed Masters having retired , the W . M . elect was entrusted and
retired . A Board of Installed Masters was then opened in ample form , not "declared , " as the manner of some is , the W . M . elect admitted and placed in the chair of K . S ., according to antient custom . Having been saluted , proclaimed , and greeted in tho usual form , the W . M . requested the Installing Master to call off for a brief space , and
during this interval the " cement " was judiciously applied , and then labour was resumed . The Board having been closed , the brethren in the several decrees were re-iulmitted , and tho W . M . saluted , proclaimed and greeted in each degree . The Installing Master requested Bro . Crapper to delivpr and explain the respective working tools , which he did in a most able manner . The W . M . invested the

Tho Auditors' report was then read , which showed that after a very expensive year there was in the hands of tlio Treasurer a balance of nearly £ 70 . The W . M . now said he bad n very pleasing dnty to perforin , namely , to present to Bro . Joseph Pickthall I . P . M . a handsome gold Past Master ' s j J wel , on behalf of
the Loilge . The inscription on tho back of the jewel so fully expies-sod the feelings that prompted the presentation , that ho would add nothing to it , and concluded by placing tho jewel on Bro . Pickthall ' s breast . Bro . Piekthall , who waa evidently much moved by this token of esteem , said—Wors . ipful Master , Past Masters , Officers and Brethren all , —The presentation of this beautiful jewel ,
which lias been awarded to me by you , conveys along with it a value of far greater worth than nny words of mine can express . You must bear with me if words fail to express all I feel at the present moment , as nothing is more embarrassing than to return thanks in suitable terms . This much I mnst say , that in accepting this jewel , I bear with me into the future a trophy of brotherly love . I never cau
forget your kind regard , and never can I look upon this jewel without the happy feeling again springing np which now well-nigh over , powers me . Tlio " esteem " which yon say it conveys , specially merits my wannest thanks . 1 am proud of snch regard , and to my dying day the association with the brethren of the Lodge of Lights , No . 148 , will bo •¦ emembered by me as among tho happiest days of
my existence . With regard to any worth of mine , ns late Worshipful Master of this Lodge , I cannot " lay auy claim to it , for whatever responsibilitiesaiv attached to that high office—and thoy aro manifold —such responsibilities have been shared in by my Wardens and other Officers ; b y them my year of office has been rendered pleasant , and the duties of Worshipful Master considerably lightened by their
knowledge of tho ritual , their general urbanity of manner , and strictly regular attendance at Lodge . Allow mo hero to tender my best thanks to each of them , and also to each of you , my Brethren , for tho respect you ever manifest to the Worshipful Mas ' er of our Lodgo . Without unnecessaril y trespassing on your time , allow mo a further indulgence in expressing a hope that the samo harmony which
characterised my year of office may be extended to yon , Sir , our worthy brother , and now Worshipful Master of this Lodge—John Rymer Young . With my precious jewel I now retire , and join the rank of Past Masters , where with them I trust I may be more useful than the limited period of my office experience . It is very gratifying to find the brethren of this Lodge so active in benevolence , nearly £ 100 has been devoted in the past year in grants to cases of distress . The ballot was taken for a candidate and proved unanimously in favour , Mr . William March was initiated
into tho mysteries of Freemasonry , in a very impressive manner . After which Lodgo was opened up , and Bro . J . Hansen Thorn W . M . elect was presented for tlio benefit of installation by Bro . J . G . Stevens P . M ., who performed tho duties of Director of Ceremonies , most ably rendering every assistance to W . Master Bro . Hugh Cotter in his importaut duties . A board of Installed Masters was then formed , Bros .
P . M . 's Wynn ancl Kindred occupying the S . and J . Wardens chairs respectively , and tho W . M . elect was duly installed into the chair of K . S . The brethren having saluted their new ruler in ancient form , the W . M . proceeded to invest his Officers as follow : —Bros . T . Taylor S . W ., E . Walter J . W ., J . G . Stevens P . M . The charges were then delivered by the Installing Master ( who also explained all tho working tool at length ) in a very able manner , after which Bros . Peacock , Etheridge and Gulley were elected Auditors . The W . M . having presented a jewel to I . P . M . Hugh Colter , Lodge was closed in
tine form , and the brethren adjourned to banquet , nicely served by tho host , Bro . Walter ' . After grace had been said by Rev . Bro . D . Shaboe , tho W . M . proposed the toast of tho Queen and Craft . He said we must all condole with Her Majesty in the groat affliction recently fallen npon her , and no section of her subjects did so with deeper sympnthy than Freemasons . " God Save the Queen" was
sunt ' . Tho W . M . next gave the toast of H . R . H . the Most Worshipful Grand Master , and spoke of the great interest taken by H . R . H . in Freemasonry . " God Bless the Prince of Wales " was here sung . Tho next toast was the P . G . M . and other Grand Lodge Officers . Bro . P . M . Wynn then rose and said : He was placed in an unexpected position this evening , through absence from the table of their I . P . M .
Hence it was his privilege to propose the health of the W . M ., which Bro . Getter would have done had he not been unwell . In looking round the Lodge he , as an old P . M ., missed many a friendly face . During the last year they had lost several respected brethren j yet ho felt that they had commenced the new year well , in prospect of the Mastership of Bro . Thorn , who , ho was sure , would do credit to the
Lodge . He would ask them to drink the health of the W . M . Bro . Thorn in reply said he bad no intention of making a long speech , but would be brief , for two reasons—1 st . He feared he could not make one if ho tried . 2 nd , He did not know what to say , except to thank them for drinking his health , and for having elected him to the high position ; he trusted bis conduct in the coming year would give them
cause to say they were satisfied with him . In reply to the toast of the P . M . 's , Bro . Wynn said he thanked the brethren once more , on behalf of the P . M . ' s ; the brethren could rely upon them fulfilling their duty to the Lodgo as far as ability would allow . He regretted Bro . Cotter ' s absence , but they might be sure their I . P . M . would appredate the toast . Ho thanked the brethren for their cordiality
to-night , and hoped the new year would prove a happy one , and that they would meet here again and again . In proposing the Masonic Charities tho W . M . said he would call upon those two hard-working brethren , Bros . Past Master Barnes and Stevens , to acquaint the brethreu with what good work was being done by our admirable Institutions . Bro . of Masonic Benevolence in 187 S : — " Dnring the year 1878 the income of the three Masonic charitable institutions from donations , subscrip . tions , and all other source * , amoumed to £ 10 , 312 4 s 3 d .
