IT was reported at the recent meeting of the Grand Lodge of Scotland that the executor of the late Brother Wm . Ferguson had instituted an action in the Court of King ' s County , Brooklyn City , New York , against the widow and next of kin of the deceased and the Grand Lodge , to have it
determined whether the will of the deceased had bequeathed the residue of his estate to his wife , and on her death to the Grand Lodge in trust for the purpose of erecting a home in Forfarshire for the benefit of poor widows of deceased husbands who at the time of their death were members of Grand
Lodge . The solicitors in New York wrote that the questions involved were ( i ) whether the Grand Lodge could take such a bequest as that in the will , and ( 2 ) whether the will contravened a statute of the United States , which provides that no person having a husband , wife , child , or parent shall by his will bequeth to any benevolent , charity , scientific ,
reli g ious , or missionary society in trust more than one-half of his estate after payment of his debts , and that such bequests shall be valid to the extent of one-half only . The value of Mr . Ferguson ' s estate was stated at about 7 , 295 dollars .
Grand Committee reported that they had requested a full report from the New York solicitors as to the position of the widow in regard to the estate , and the probable expense of the litigation . This was approved .
The annual ball of the Friars Lodge , No . 1349 , Wul take place on Thursday , 23 rd inst ,, at the Holborn Restaurant .
