the brethren separated , after having spent a very enjoyable day , which was greatly enhanced by tho admirable arrangements of the Halesworth brethren . We regret to announce that an alarming accident befell the passengers by tho up train , still wo hope that all will eventually recover from the severe shock and fright they experienced .

ANNUAL SUMMER FESTIVAL OF THE LODGE

OF PROSPERITYNo . 65 .

IT has for some years been the custom of this Lodgo to give the ladies and brethren a summer outing . Last year , under the presidency of Bro . Brown , a very enjoyable day was passed on board the " Maria Wood . " On Tuesday , the 8 th inst ., a numerous attendance of ladies and brethren met afc the Star and Garter , Richmond , where they were received by tho W . M . Bro . C . Daniel ( who now occupies

tho chair for the second time ) , and an efficient body of Stewards , at 2 o ' clock . The ladies and brethren adjourned to the Pavilion Room , where 116 sat down to banquet , which was provided by Bro . Hunt , and gave great satisfaction , the wines and viands being of first rate quality . The table was beautifully and artistically decorated with flowers . Bro . Daniel , the W . M ., on entering , was loudly cheered .

There were passing showers , but occasionally a gleam of sunahine broke through the clouds . Among tho brethren present were Bros . P . M . ' s Brown , Bellerby Leina , Carruthera , Arnold and Davey ; and Bros . Pierce , Muggleton , Sim , Braine , Marfleet , Deveniah , Rich , Ratcliff , Feltham , Fells , Meade , Billing , Goodall , Roberts , Chickens , Terry , Chadler , Miller , Lawrence , Walker , Birch , H . M . Levy , & c .

Grace having been aaid , the brethren and ladies , after taking a walk on the terrace , enjoying tbo scenery , returned to tho banquet room , where a very excellent dessert waa laid out ; the W . M . very genially presided , brisfly proposing the toasts of the Qaeen and the Craft , the M . W . G . M . H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , and the rest of the Grand Officers of tbe Grand Lodge of England . Bro . Fowler sang

tbe " Village Blacksmith , " accompanied by Mr . Marsi on the piano . The W . M . then proposed what he considered the toast of the day—Tho Ladies—without them the meeting would be an uninteresting one . He was sure the brethren would like to see them offcener among them , but Masonic duties precluded such enjoyment . Ho called on Bro . Allen to return thanks for the single , and Bro . Billing for the married

ladies who had honoured the brethren by their presence . The W . M , atated that Bro . Goodall had composed some very appropriate verses , which were then sung by Mr . Marsi , aud were enthusiastically re . ceived . Both brethren called upon returned thanks . Bro . Allen very eloquently and humbly returned thanks for the single , and Bro . Billing briefly , but to tho purpose , responded for the married ladies .

Bro . Braine amused the company by the song of the " Five o ' clock 'bus , " which excited roars of laughter . Bro . Brown I . P . M . said he had much pleasure in proposing the health of the W . M ., who had not only endeavoured , but had succeeded in doing his duty , both in his capacity of W . M . in the Lodge , and as President of the day . The success of the day's proceedings was due to him , and he asked the

brethren to drink his health , as well as of that of his amiable wife . Bro . E . W . Miller sang a very excellent song . The W . M ., in reply , thanked Bro . Brown for his kind expressions on behalf of himself and his dear wife . He was fche representative of tho Lodge , and while in thafc position he would do what was right ; and just . He hoped to give them the same satisfaction ns he did when he was W . M . in 1877 .

Arrangements had been made to hold the meeting afc another hotel , but ifc was found thafc they could nofc meet there , and so had met at the Star and Garter . They bad there received every satisfaction . He hoped they would meet there for many years to come . Mrs . Plater sang "Ernani . " The W . M . then proposed the toasfc of the Visitors . Those brethren were very numerous . He called on

Bros . Fowler and H . M . Levy to respond . Each having replied , the W . M . proposed the toast of the P . M . ' s , who , he said were all worthy brethren . Bro . Brown I . P . M ., in reply , said he felfc proud to bo associated with the toast . It was the duty of the P . M . ' s to look after the interest of the Lodge . Bro . Arnold followed . The W . M . in proposing the toast of the Officers , spoke of Bro . A . L . Leins P . M .

Whatever duties he undertakes he carries out in every way to their satisfaction . All the Officers know their duties , but the Lodge was especially indebted to its old and indefatigable member , Bro . A . L . Leina . The W . M . then proposed the toasfc of the Masonic Charities ; speaking of what had been done for their benefit . He coupled with the toast | the name of Bro . Bellerby P . M ., who he said

was indefatigable in hia exertions in the cause of charit y . Mrs . Plater again delighted the brethren , and was deservedly encored . Bro . Leins P . M . returned thanks for the toasfc of the Officers , and Bro . Bellerby for the Charities . He said the Lodge had mado itself "Vice-President of two Institutions , and V . P . of the R . M . B . I . Bro . Brown at tho last Festival took up tho sum of £ 110 for the Bovs '

School , which they as membera of the Lodge of Prosperity were proud of . The W . M . then proposed the health of the Stewards , who had so materially conduced to the day ' s enjoyment , coupled with the name of Bro . Roberts S . D ., who responded . Bro . Speight P . M . acted efficiently aa toast-master . The room waa then cleared , and after an interval tea and coffee was served , and the ladiea and brethren enjoyed the pleasures of dancing , whichwaskeptup with great spirit .

Grand Sec . of England , Webb , Gunningham , Perry , Smith , Ford , and others . Tho Lodge was opened , and tho minntes of last ; regular , as also thoso of an emergency meeting , wero read and confirmed . Tho brethren appeared in mourning , as a

token of respect to tbo memory of the late I . G ., Bro . Oliver . The ballot was taken for the admission of Mr . R . Ford , which being declared unanimous in his favour , that gentleman was duly initiated into the Order . A Board of Installed Masters was opened , and Bro . C . Lovibond , the AV . M . elect , waa duly presented , and installed into tho chair by Bro . Thompson , in a manner that well merited tho

encomiums passed on him at the conclusion of tho ceremony . Tho W . M . having received tho usual salutations , appointed tho following brethren to fill the offices for the year : —Bros . Gametfc S . W ., Ramsay J . W ., Byers Treasurer , J . Tanner P . M . P . P . G . S . D . Essex Secretary , Leaman S . D ., Symonds J . D ., F . Meen Organist and I . G ., Frith D . C ., and Goddard P . M . Tyler . Applause followed the

investiture of each Officer , and the W . M ., by his remarks to each ou appointment showed hia aptitude for the office he had just been called upon to fill . The resignation of a brother was received with regret . Letters from Bro . Col . Burdett , Prov . Grand Master of Middlesex , and other brethren , expresaing their inability to attend , were read . A subscription on behalf of tho widow of a deceased

brother resulted in a good round sum being contributed . A letter of condolence was ordered to bo sent to Mrs . Oliver , expressing the sympathy of the members with her in her recent bereavement . Hearty good wishes having been tendered by the Visitors , the Lodge was formally closed until September next . The banquet , which was well served , was universally praised , the catering of Bro . Newall

being aucb as to merit the kind expresatons mado by the brethren . Afc the conclusion of the banquet grace was sung by the English Glee Union ( Bros . H . Ashton , F . H . Cozens , F . T . Gordon , aud A . Hubbard ) , accompanied by tho Organist of the Lodge . The health of Her Majesty the Queen was the first toast given from the chair . Thia waa followed by that of H . R . H . the Prince of Wales Grand

Master of England , the W . M . in giving it referred to the many Masonic duties undertaken by His Royal Highness . The toast of tbe Pro Grand Master , the Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers was now given . Tho W . M . considered that English Freemasonry owed a great deal to these brethren to whom waa entrusted the management of the Craft . He especially referred to

the presence of the Assistant Grand Sec ( Bro . Buss ) , who was at tbe time of the W . M . 's initiation tho Secretary of the Lolgo which received him . He considered that no better representative of Grand Lodge could be found , and he had the greatest pleasure in calling on him to respond . Bro . Buss was extremely pleased to have to return thanks for the kind expressions of tho W . M . in giving the

last toasfc , and also for the hearty reception those remarks had met at tho hands of the brethren . In his position in the Office of the Grand Lodge he should ever hold himself at the service of the members of tho Craft . Bro . Thompson I . P . M . pro - posed tho health of the W . M ., whom he said had earned a great reputation by his labours in the Craft . The speaker had had the pleasure

of raising him to the third degree , and had watched his progress with pleasure . He felt assured that in his new position ho would carry out his duties most efficiently . The W . M . in reply tendered bis thanks for tbo kind reception the brethren accorded him . He should ever consider the prestige of the Lodge , and should endeavour to emulate those brethren who had preceded him . He

hoped that during his year of office ho should carry out every duty to their satisfaction . Ho then proposed the health of the newly-initiated brother . He was well introduced , and would command the respect of every member . Bro . Ford , in acknowledging fche toaafc , expressed bis indebtedness to the W . M . for the kind way iu which he had referred to his qualifications , and hoped that he

should by hia future conduct prove that the confidence reposed in him had not been misplaced . The W . M . next gave the toaat of the Visitors , coupling therewith tho names of Bros . Giles , Buscall , Rawlinson and H . M . Levy , each of whom responded . The health of the Past Masters followed . Both Bros . Tanner and Thompson were , the W . M . aaid , entitled to the heartiest thanks of the Lodge for the

way in which they had laboured for its benefit . He bad an especially pleasing task before him—to present to Bro . Thompson fche P . M . ' s jewel which had been voted by the Lodge , and which that brother had so justly merited . Bro . Thompson , after thanking the brethren for the jewel , stated that he should ever feel it a source of great pleasure to do all in his power for the good of the Lodge . Bro .

Tanner followed , urging tbe brethren to attend the Lodge of Inatruction held under the sanction of the " Eleanor ; " they would ther receive able instruction . The W . M . then gave the toast of the Officers of the Lodgo , which was acknowledged by the two Wardens . "Success to the Masonio Charitiea" followed ; tho W . M . in the course of bis remarks strongly urging the brethren to support the

noble Institutions connected with our Order . He pointed out that a very small sum , if given by each Freemason , would supply sufficient to enable the Committees to relieve every ease of distress that might come under their notice . He called upon Bro . Tanner to respond , that brother had , the W . M . said , laboured earnestly in the canse of charity , as the jewels on his breast would amply testify . Bro . Tanner

detailed the results of tho several Festivals held during the year m aid of the funds of the Charities . He considered that the total ( £ 37 , 000 ) was a wonderful sum to collect , considering the general depression throughout the country . Ho hoped that he should be ablo to work further in tho cause , and that he should ever have the assistance and co-operation of tho brethren around him . After somo
