THE annual Convocation of tho Provincial Grand Chapter of Cheshire was held at the Masonic Hall , Congleton , on Wednesday , 2 nd inst ., under the banner of the Warren Chapter , No . 533 . The Companions of this Chapter—the latest addition to the roll of Cheshire Chapters—had made most complete and satisfactory arrangements for tho event , the whole of tho proceedings being
earned ont -within their commodious and -well-appointed rooms at the Masonic Hall , ancl it was generally remarked by tho Companions in attendance that the Provincial Grand Chapter of Cheshire was never seen to better advantage than on the present occasion . Notwithstanding tho fact of Congleton being somewhat difficult of access from the greater part of the Province , there waa a very fair muster
of Provincial Grand Officers , Principals of Chapters , and lay members from the 19 Chapters in the Province , all with three exceptions being represented . Provincial Grand Chapter was opened shortly after three p . m ., by the Most Excellent Provincial Grand Superintendent Companion Lord de Tabley , Grand J . of England , as £ ., Companion T . Marwood
as H ., and Companion H . Bulley P . P . G . H . as J . The M . E . Provincial Grand Superintendent having been saluted in ancient form by tho assembled Companions , tho roll of Chapters was called by the Provincial Grand Scribe E . Companion G . W . Latham , and the minutes of the last annual Convocation held at Stockport twelve months ago , read and confirmed .
Tho report of the committee appointed to inspect Chapters and regulate the procedure in reference to Royal Arch Masonry in the Province was read , and on the motion of the Provincial Grand Superintendent , ordered to be printed for distribution amongst the Chapters of the Province , and the thanks of the Provincial Grand Chapter were accorded to the members of the committee for their
labours . The M . E . Provincial Grand Superintendent then addressed the Companions at some length , and expressed hia pleasure and gratitude afc being ably once more to meet them in Provincial Grand Chapter , and more especially so nnder the banner of a Chapter which he had so recently consecrated to the purposes of Royal Arch
Masonry . He paid a well-deserved compliment to the Companions of Congleton for the excellence of their arrangements , and referred to the satisfaction he felt , as head of the Province , in seeing the disposition evinced by members of the Craft to dissociate Freemasonry from taverns . Nothing afforded him greater pleasure and satisfaction than to hear of brethren and Companions of the Order
carrying out the business and duties of Masonry away from taverns , and he hoped the excellent example set by the Masons of Congleton in this respect would be followed in other parts of the Province . The P . G . Treasurer , Companion F . Jackson jun ., submitted his statement of the Prov . Grand Chapter funds , which showed a balance in hand of over £ 15 . On the motion of the Provincial Grand
Superintendent , the accounts were passed , and Companion Jackson was unanimously re-elected Treasurer . The M . E . P . waa chosen , and returned thanks to the members . Bro . T . B . Whytehead P . S . was re-elected Treasurer . A resolution expressive of sympathy with the Masons of America in tbe loss of their late brother the President was passed , and ordered to be forwarded to the heads of the Ancient and Accepted Rite in the United States .
The ceremony of installation will be rehearsed in the St . Michael ' s Lodge of Instruction , No . 211 , held at the Moorgate , Moorgate-sfcreefc , E . G ., on the J 7 th instant , by the Preceptor , Bro . Geo . King , P . M . of the Old Concord Lodge .

ON Friday last there died , at the residence of his sou , 54 Frenchwood-streefc , at the age of 77 , an old and much respected inhabitant of the town of Preston , Brother William Bailey . He was for a quarter of a century in business in Pishergate as a printer and stationer , and , on the repeal of the stamp duty , commenced a weekly paper
under the title of the Preston Standard , which was , however , discontinued the following year . Bro . Bailey was an . enthusiastic Freemason when the Craft was not so popular as it is now , and was a P . M . of three Lodges—viz ., the Lodge of Perseverance , No . 155 , now held at Liverpool ,
but formerly at Preston ; the Lodge of Concord , No . 343 , Starkie-street , Preston ; and the Clifton Lodge , No . 703 , held at Blackpool . Of the last he was one of the founders , and was the first W . M . He succeeded in tiding the two former Lodges over a very critical period of their existence ,
and , with the assistance of a few other ardent members , laid fcho foundation of their present prosperity . About eighteen months ago Bro . Bailey returned to Preston to spend tho remainder * of his clays , and although better known to a generation now fast passing away , the death of
" Judge" Bailey , as ho was familiarly termed , from his fine commanding presence , and the firm and decisive manner in which he gave utterance to his convictions , will be learned with deep regret by liot a few of those now foremost in the battle of life . —Preston Herald .
