HUMBER LODGE , No . 57 .
From the HULL PACKET AND EAST BIDING TIMES .
THE 49 th anniversary of laying tho foundation stone of the Free , masons' Hall , in Osborne-street , was celebrated ou Monday evening last , whon there was a lareo and influential assemblage of the brethren , including many officers of rank from other Lodges in tho Province . Tho Lodgo was opened in due form at 7 o ' clock , the W . M ., Bro . Alfred W . Ansell , presiding , aud being supported on the dais b y
tho W . Deputy Prov . Grand Master of North and East Yorkshire , and a brilliant array of Past Masters and Prov . Graud Officers . After tho transaction of the ordinary business , tho W . M . called upon P . M . Bro . Tesseym . au ( who officiated as Secretary , in the absence of Bro . W . H . Wollstead ) to read the minutes taken at the meeting when the foundation stone was laid , in May 1827 . From theso ib appeared
that tho Humber Lodgo had hitherto assembled at the Neptune Inn , Osborne-street , and that , on the " auspicious occasion" recorded , the brethren wont in procession to tho site of the proposed new structure , where tho ceremony was gone through , in accordance with ancient rites , and in the presence of a very large and distinguished assemblage of tho Craft . The curiously worded record was listened to with everv
attention by the brethren present , and afterwards tho W . M . said tho officers and brethren of tho Humber Lodge had taken advantage of this anniversary to present to their Past Master Bro . Alderman John Love Seaton some slight testimonial in recognition of his services as Treasurer of tho Benevolent and Pension Fund , which office he had so well and ably filled during tho last ten years ( applause ) . During
tho whole of that period thoy had not heard a single word of complaint of tho manner in which he had discharged the responsible functions of that office ; on the contrary , thoy had heard on all sides that ho had been a faithful guardian of tho fund over which he had control ( applause ) . He ( the W . M . ) had hoard BrotherSeaton ' s conduct in that office spoken of in such terms as must havo given confidence
to all tho brethren who wero connected with the Lodge : and he simply alluded to this to testify their appreciation of tho ser . vices Brother Seaton had rendered . But , seeing lie had resigned tho trust ho had so long and faithfully discharged , the officers and brethren felt they could not allow au occasion like tho present to pass over without expressing their appreciation of his worth in some
tangible form . When they looked back over the last , half a century , when Masonry was in its infancy , so to speak—at all events in connection with this lodge—they called to mind the honoured names of those who assisted in laying tho foundation of that structure upon which they had continued to build , until tho Humber Lodgo had now attained a position second to none in the United Kingdom . Wherever
tho name of the Humber Lodge was mentioned it was received with respect ; and this was to bo attributed to those who had laboured so zealously and well in tho past to establish tho prestige aud reputation of the Lodge . The speaker went on to allude to the services rendered by Bro . Seaton during the last 30 years , referring , in complimentary terms , to tho manner in which ho had discharged the
various offices ho had held , and tho respect and esteem he had earned from the brethren by his exemplary conduct and efficiency . In 1874 , during which year Bro . Seaton filled the exalted position of Chief Magistrate of this borough , tho brethren , under tho Mastership of Bro . Vivian , had tho honour of entertaining him at a complimentary banqu t . He ( the speaker ) was privileged to sit under that
gentleman dnring and since his mayoralty ; and it afforded him sincere gratification to testify to tho ability and zeal with which Bro . Seaton discharged his duties in the Corporation as well as within the walls of tho Masonic Lodge . Ho referred at some length to the excellencies of Aid . Seaton ' s public career , and concluded by askiog that ETcntleman's acceptance of the following address , which had been
beautifully engrosser ! on vellum by Bro M . C . Peck jnn ., aud enclosed in a massive gilt frame : — " Tho Master , Past Masters , Wardens , Officers , and Brethren of the Humber Lodge of Freemasons , No . 57 , Hull , beg to tender their heartv and fraternal thanks to Bro . John Love Seaton , P . M ., P . P . G . W .,
on the occasion of his resignation ( after ten years' tenure ) of tho office of Treasurer of the Humber Lodge Benevolent and Pension Fund , and for his valuable and efficient services . " They desire at the same time to express their high appreciation of the admirable manner in which ho has discharged the duties of various offices in the Lodge , and testify to his earnest and able efforts
