There were about 400 of the brethren present , many of them being from country Lodges . Tho M . W . G . M . Sir Michael R . Shaw-Stewart , Bart ., occupied the throno ; Bro . P . A . Barrow P . S . G . W . acted as S . G . W . ; and R . Shaw-Stewart was in his place as J . G . W . Tho Grand Master
was supported by the Earl of Mar and Kellio Depute G . M ., and A . Smollett of Bonhill Prov . G . M . Dambartonsliiro acting Substitute G . M . Most of the Grand Officers wero present , as wero also many of tho Past Officers and numerous representatives of Foreign and Colonial G rand Lodges . Tho Grand Secretary intimated that apologies for absence had boon received from Brothers Colonel
Campbell of Blythswoocl , the Earl of Haddington , Charles Dalrymple , M . P ., tho Earl of Breatlalbano , and Captain Colt of Gartshorrie , <_ o . Brother R . F . Shaw-Stowarfc presented his commission as representative of "The Countries" Grand Lodgo of Germany , and was congratulated thereon from tho throne . Grand Lodgo having been properly constituted , reports of tho Proceedings of tho Grand
Lodges of West Virginia , Nova Scotia , and Massachusetts , and also a copy of a sketch of tho Incorporation of Masons . and the Lodgo of Glasgow St . John , from the author , Brother James Cruickshank Past Depute Prov . G . M . of Glasgow City Province , wero received with thanks . An abstract was submitted of tho accounts of Grand Lodgo for tho yoar from 1 st December 1878 to 29 th November last , which
showed tho total estate afc tho clbso of the account to havo been £ 16 , 70 _ , or an increase of fnnrls during the year of nearly -61 , 570 . Tho income had been ; C ( . , 450 , and the expenditure £ 2 , 880 . Thero had been about 4000 entrants and affiliations during tho year . An abstract was also tabled of tho accounts of tho Masonic Benevolonco Fund for tho samo period , which showed an increase of funds daring
the year of £ 259—the total estate afc the close being £ 5 , 460 . The income had been £ 641 , and tho expenditure £ 385 , of which £ 350 had been specially voted to benevolent purposes Toy tho committee , and £ 19 had been granted in casual charities . A vidimus by the Grand Cashier of tho income and expenditure of Grand Lodge for the threo months ending 24 th January showed an income of £ 1 , 283 , which
exceeded the expenditure by £ 604 . From a statement regarding the Fund of Benevolence , it appeared that grants to the amount of £ 72 had been voted during tho quarter ending 29 th January . Tho resignation of Colonel W . Montgomerie Neilson of Quecnshill as Prov . G . M . of Glasgow was accepted . In accordance with , tho recommendation of Grand Committee , it was resolved that fraternal
relations bo opened with the Grand Lodgo of California , and Bro . John Mills Browno was appointed representative of Grand Lodge near that of California . Bro . Rollin Jewetfc Tucker was appointed Prov . G . M . of Bermuda , in room of the deceased Bro . Dr . F . J . Hunter . Grand Lodgo ordered that charters bo issued in favour of Lodges Occur do Loon , Moruya , Now South Wales , and St . George's , Grenada . Ifc was
resolved that tbo Province of which Bro . the Earl of Haddington has been appointed Grand Master bo named the Province of Berwick and Roxburgh shires . Intimation was made of tho dissolution of tho Lodgo Caledonian , Haskieu , Constantinople . Leave was given to tho Lodge St . Luke's , Edinburgh ( No . 44 ) to alter its name , to tho effect of being known and designated in future as the Lodge of Holyrood
House ( St . Luke ' s ) . Bro . W . Officer drew attention to the report by Grand Committee that the Grand Master had presented to Grand Lodge a minute book of the Lodge St . Andrew , Dumfries , No . 179 , of which Burns was a member , bearing the Poet ' s signature to the bye-laws , and containing the minute of his admission , the mallet of St . Andrew , and an apron used in the Lodge in Burns' time . Burns held the post of Senior
Warden iu this lodge during tho year ending 30 th November 1793 . Tho last meeting of the Lodge at which he was present was beld in the Coffee honse on 14 th April 1796 , just three months before his death on 21 st July . The Lodge was chartered in 1774 , bnt was cut off the roll of Grand Lodge in 1816 . Tho motion was carried with acclamation ; and tho Grand Master , in replying , assured tho brethren ib had given him great pleasure to be able to present those interesting relics to tho Grand Lodgo of Scotland . Bro . William Mann thon rose to present to Grand Lodge a duplicate of tho marble bust of tho Grand Master whioh was lately presented to
Lady Octavia-Shaw Stewart , in recognition of tho services whioh her husband had rendered to Grand Lodgo during the past six years . In doing so , ho said that dnring thafc period Grand Lodge had passed from a state of disorganisation and discredit to a state of prosperity and order . He was quite sure a great deal of this had been brought
about by the kindness and wise direction of the Grand Master . Tho bust , which is an excellent likeness of tho Grand Master , was then unveiled amid cheers , and in a fow complimentary sentences Bro . Mann , on behalf of the Freemasons of Scotland , asked tho Grand Master to accept of tho bust , to bo retained in Grand Lodgo through all time .
Tho Grand Master thou asked , whether ifc was the pleasure of Grand Lodgo that tho bust be accepted ? and this being answered by prolonged cheers , ho proceeded to say—That being agreed to , allow me , for my own part , to return yon my most sincere thanks for tho honour you havo done mo . As my old friend , Bro . Mann has said , tho Masons of Scotland have already paid me a great compliment in tho most kind
manner m presenting to my wife an excellent likeness of her husband , the Grand Master Mason—presented to herself at her own fireside , there to remain u memorial for my children , and a pleasure and an interest now to many friends coming about Ardgowan . Brethren , you have dono more than this , kind as thafc act was . You have judged me fib to have my busb placed in Grand Lodge—a very great honour
indeed . Ifc is no small complimonb fco bo thought worthy of having one's bust placed in the samo lino with those two already in Grand Lodge . Looking afc these likenesses , of Whyte-Melvillo and Dalhousie , I cannot but remember thab it was with very groat misgivings , when moro than six years ago you did me tho honour to elect mo to tho throno , thafc I found myself the successor of those ablo

By no means strong in health afc thafc time , I foresaw great difficulties in succeeding these men , to say nothing of my immediate predecessor , tho vivacious and accomplished Lord Rosslyn . I remember expressing in Grand Lodge on that occasion my diffidence and fears as to my success ; bub I also remember assuring Grand Lodgo that I would , as far as it was in mypower , devote myself to tho
interests of Scottish Masonry ; aud , brethren , yonr kindness , your very groat kindness , shows mo thab you kindly appreciate my efforts on behalf of Masonry . I do not wish to detain you by making a long speech . I thank my old friend Bro . Mann for tho kind words in which ho has alluded to mo . Boliovo me thafc your handsome present to Lady Octavia , your kindness to myself , tho confidence you havo shown
in mo , and your friendship , and , moreover , tho high honour which you pay me this evening , daring my lifo will over he gratefully remembered . WE regret to record tho death , on tho 10 th msfc ., afc his residence , 138 Milkwood-road , S . E ., of Bro . Charles Lambert Marshall , at tho early ago of 46 . Our esteemed lamented brother formerly held a distinguished position in tho 10 th Hussars—retiring shortly after tho Crimean war , ab which campaign ho was present . Dnring the early part of our volunteer movement he took an active part in
tho development of three regiments , and being an excellent fencer and swordsman , assisted at many of those "Assaults of Arms" which have now become so popular . In the Craft he obtained high honours , being P . M . of the Neptune , No . 22 , and P . Z . to Mount Sion Chapter , No . 22 , besides a member of several other Orders . After a
successful career in business , he retired into private life only six weeks before the G . A . O . T . U . thought fit to summon him—having survived his wife , to whom he was devotedly attached , 17 months . His remains were interred on Monday last , afc Norwood Cemetery , during a storm of wind and rain . As we took a last look at the resting place of our departed brother the dark clouds cleared away
and tho sun shone brilliantly , as if nature herself was emblematically suggesting that although the grave seemed dull and dreary , future life is bright beyond . The principal mourners were Mr . Charles E . Marshall ( oldest son of tho deceased ) , Bro . W . Shury Marshall W . M . 1549 ( only surviving brother ) , Messrs . 0 . E . Santry , Arthur aud William Ashwoll , Pearce , Bull , and Fisher ,
