NOTICES OF MEETINGS .

Burdett Cotltts Lodge , No . 1278 . —The Installation mooting of this well known Lodge was held on Thursday evening , the 21 st inst ., at tho Approach Tavern , Approach-road , Victoria Park . An Emergency Meeting had been held on Thursday , the 14 th inst ., to clear tho bnsiness paper , so that OD the present occasion tho work merely comprised tho Installation ceremony and tho appointment of

officers for the ensuing year . The Lodge was opened at five o ' clock , under the presidency of Bro . William John Crutch , who was supported by his officers and a strong contingont of tho members , as well as a goodly array of visitors . Tho minutes of the previous meeting and of tho emergency meeting having been read and confirmed , Bro . Jas . Terry , tho worthy Treasurer of the Lodge , acting as Director of

the Ceremonies , introduced Bro . William Toye S . W . to the Worship , f nl Master as the duly eleotod candidato for the Chair . Bro . Crutch , who throughout his year of office has done the work of his Lodge in a most satisfactory and painstaking manner , then completed his round of duties by installing his successor , and that in a manner deserving of the highest praise . Tho addresses were delivered faultlessly , and

tho assembled brethren expressed the highest commendation of the Installing Master ' s ability . Bro . Toye invested his officers as follow Bros . C . K . Crouch S . W ., A . Lazarus J . W ., G . Ward Verry P . M . Sec , James Terry P . M . Treasurer , W . T . Christian S . D ., Defries J . D ., Birchall D . C ., T . Hadley Prestage Steward , Sturtevant I . G ., A . Jones Asst . W . S ., W . Gilchrist Tyler . Some letters of apology

referring to tho inability of the writers to attend were then read ; the resignation of ono member was tendered and accepted , with regret . The exclusion of a brother was then decided upon , after which tho Lodge was closed . A short adjournment thon took place previous to the banquet , which was capitally served by tho host of the Approach Tavern . On the removal of the cloth the customary

loyal toasts wero given . Bro . Toye gave the health of tho initiates of the Lodge , Bros . Harris and Making jun ., who , he stated , had been introduced into Masonry on an occasion when there was no oppor . tunity of drinking to their prosperity . This toast was briefly acknowledged by both brethren . The I . P . M ., Bro . Crutch , next rose

to propose tho health of their nowly installed Master , aud called the attention of tho brethren to the way in which Bro . Toye had worked his way in the Lodge . He was convinced that all the members would bo satisfied with their selection , and that the Lodge would continue to prosper under his government . Bro . Crutch concludod his remarks with the following apt quotation :

" From lowest placo where virtuous things proceed , Tho place is dignified by the doer ' s deed . " The W . M . replied : Bro . Past Master Crutch and Brethren , —I return you my sincere thanks for the kind manner in which you havo proposed and received this toast . The chair of this Lodge had always had an especial attraction for me , and I have been very anxious to

reach it . As you aro aware I was not an initiate here , but am only a stepson , and that being the case , I cannot but feel proud of being where I now am . When a stepmother entrusts the government of her household to her stepson , it is an evidence that confidence reigns supreme . I can assure the brethren that I will endeavour to uphold and deserve that confidence , and that the welfare of the

Lodge shall at all times have my best consideration . The nest toast was the Visitors , which was replied to by Bros . P . M . Koberts , Porceval , and others . An interesting incident next took place , the presentation to Bro . Crutch of a Past Master ' s jewel , for the ablo manner in which ho had conducted the Lodge during the past year . In doing this , Bro . Toyo expressed tho pleasure it gave him ; he

referred to the perseverance exhibited by their worthy brother in tho performance of every duty required of him , and concluded his remarks by wishing he might live long , in health and strength , to wear the gift he now had tho honour to present on behalf of tho Lodge . Bro . Crutch suitably replied , after which the toast of tho P . M . 's wa 3 given , to which Bro . James Terry replied . He said that all the Past

Masters esteemed the addition made to their ranks that mght , by the advent of Bro . Crutch , who he was snre would endeavour to do in the future what he had so well done in tho past . He then called the attention of the members to tho case of a daughter of one of their late members , who was a candidato at the next election , in October , for the Girls' School . This was tho

first case that had come directly home to them , and he exhorted them to follow the noble example of the estimable lady whose name their Lodge bore , and by their works secure the election of their can . didate on tho second Saturday in October . Bro . Terry humourously concluded a pertinent speech by reminding the W . M . that he did not consider lie ( the W . M . ) had done justice to the Past Masters

inhi 3 remarks ; ho was , however , snre the members appreciated their many qualities . However , ho supposed ho must realiso the fact that their new W . M . was but a Toye in the Lodge , and must therefore be handled gently . At the same time he would give him to understand that tho P . M . ' s would keep a sharp look out , and if they

caught him tripping bo should hear from them . The remaining toasts wero then fully honoured , and a call for the Ty ler brought a most agreeable evening to a close . Somo capital songs were given , Bros . Wallington , Berry , Making , Davis , & c , favouring the company .
