In all my Masonic career 1 have been actuated by a desire to promote the principles and tenets of Masonry in thtir fullest degree , and emulate those noble examples which are here represented to-night . I am not unmindful of the fact that in occupying this chair I am following in the footsteps of many able and experienced Masters , and my only fear is that 1 shall never be able to
attain to the standard of excellence which many of my predecessors have done . But I can assure you , Brethren , that if the G . A . O . T . U . shall give me health and strength during the next twelve months I will try to so conduct myself in the chair and the business of the year that the prestige of the Lodge shall at least be maintained , And that I may leave the chair as unsullied as I now enter it . I
rejoice to be your Vv . M . for this year for one or two reasons : mthe first place it is an epoch in the history of the Lodge ; to-night we attain our majority , and now rank among the matured Lodges of the Province . Brother P . M . James Abbott P . P . G . D . C , who is No . 1 upon our Register and was its first J . W ., and who I was pleased to see occupying the same position during this afternoon's ceremony . Our venerable P . M . Bro . Thos . Aspinall was also a Joining Member on the same day ; one of the promoters and first Treasurer . Our Senior P . M . Thos . Hughes was proposed that evening as a Joinirg
Member from Duke of Athol , No . 210 , and joined in December , so that these three Brethren have had an honourable connection for twent ) -one jears and stand one , two , three upon our Register . 1 rejoice too , because during my year our Mother Lodge , the Duke of Athol , HO will reach its Centenary . 1 am glad to see it represented here by my esteemed friend and Bro . Dr . ioreman P . M ., and I am
sure the old Lady will not ci ase to exist so long as he is connected with it . Financially our Lodge is healthy and surrounued by an excellent set of Officers and members ; the future and success of the Lodge is assured . In conclusion , I thaiik you Brethren for your attendance this evening , and while taking it as a compliment to myself , 1 consider the Lodge is honoured . "

M .. congratulating him upon his successful year and work , and assuring him of the high esteem he is held in hy the members , who wished in a more tangible form to express their gratitude , which , on their behalf , he now had the pleasure of doing , by presenting him with a P . M . 's jewel , inscribad as follows :
Presented to BRO . JOHN SMITH P . M . as a token of their esteem , by the members of the Ashbury Lodge , No . 1459 , for services rendered as W . M . during 1893-4 .
Bro . M . and of those associated with the Lodge . - Bro . P . M . Beastow Treasurer proposed the Visitors , which was acknowledged by all the Visiting Brethren , who spoke in most complimentary terms of the Worshipful Master and the hospitality received .
Dr . Foreman said he could not help saying how pleased he was to be present as representing the Moth er Lodge of Ashbuiy . Be was one of those who had the pleasure of associating with the W . M . in the higher degrees of Mark , R . A . and K . T ., and for three or four years had watched him and noted the interest he took in all work of the various degrees .
Other toasts followed , Bros . Jones P . M ., Hilton P . M ., Griffiths , Jee , A . E . Burgess and Trotter adding to the enjoyment of the evening by rendering some excellent songs and recitations .
