name , and also for their appreciation of his services as shown by their presentation to him of a very handsome timepiece , which he should value all his lifetime . A letter . was read from Mrs . Heaton . thanking the Brethren for their sympathy evinced on the death of her husband , the late Peter Heaton Past Master .

At the festive hoard , the usual Loval and Masonic toasts were varied by songs , recitations , & c , contributed by Bros . Hedley Jones S . D ., J . Hardwicke Marsh P . M . Prov . G . Std .. J . Goodwin , R . Wilmot 163 , Edw . Roberts P . M . 1459 , and others . A special feature was introduced by Bro . J . Harrison Hill , Lodge 317 , a member of the Manchester Arts Club , who gave some admirable pianoforte variations on that old and popular nursery song " Three

Blind Mice , " which he entitled " An old air in a new style . " Commencing -with tho air as it would be rendered by' an itinerant , Bro . Hill gradually developed the music until it passed through the degrees of piano organ , organ voluntary , the tune as it might havo boon created by those master minds Mendelssohn , Mozart , Handel , Chopin , and Bach , concluding with tho same

tuno as a ' March Militairc . " It was a clever performance , and quite justified the eulogy which Sir Henry Irving bestowed upon it when given elsewhere upon a recent occasion . Bro . Hill also treated the company to one of his own compositions , " The dear old L and Y , " and two songs in tho style of George Grossmith .

The toast of the Provincial Grand Officers , introduced by the W . M ., was responded to by Bro . Marsh , who thus made his first speech in the capacity of a Provincial Officer . That of the newly-passed Brother was submitted by Bro . J . S . Whitley J . W ., and replied to in due course by Bro . Proudfoot . Other toasts were proposed , a pleasant evening being passed .

Among those present we noticed Bros . Arthur Hawkins J . D ., J . Bowers P . M . P . P . G . P . Organist . W . H . Ashworth I . G , Walter Bowers I . P . M ., John Walton jun . P . M ., John Slvman , J . P ., P . M . P . P . G D ., and others . Visitors : —Bros . W . H . Higham W . M . 346 , and A . W . Stanley J . D . 1774 .

ZION LODGE , No . 1798 . rpiHE regular meeting was held at the Grand Hotel , Aytoun Street , JL Manchester , on Wednesday , 10 th inst ., Bro . Joseph Gershon W . M . After the reading and confirmation of minutes the election of Officers took place , with the result that Bro . B . Steel S . W . was unanimously selected as W . M ., Bro . S Mamelok P . M . as Treasurer , and Bro . Geo . Board P . M . P . P . G . D . as Charity Representative . The Auditors appointed were Bros . Steel S . W . and A . Altaras .

WINDERMERE LODGE , No . 2217 . rriHE Brethren celebrated the festival of St . John at the Masonic Hall , I Old Road , Windermere , on the 11 th inst ., when Bro . Joseph Guy Simpkin PdstProv . G . Std . Br . Leicestershire and Rutland was installed as Worshipful Master for the ensuing year . The ceremony of installation was impressively performed by Bro . Winder W . M ., who was ably assisted by Bro . Tolson P . G . S D .

The Lodge was honoured with the presence of Bro . Colonel Frederick Robertson Sewell , J . P ., of Brandlingill , Cockermouth , the Deputy Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland .

DUKE OF YORK LODGE , No . 2449 . rriHE regular meeting was held at the Palatine Hotel , Hunt ' s Bank , I Manchester , on Thursday , 11 th inst ., having succeeded an excellent tea supplied by the new management . There was no particular business before tho meeting , so that an early adjournment was made to the festive board , which was presided over by Bro . Clement J . Hall W . M ., a very pleasant

evening passing quickly away . Bro . Hall was efficiently supported by Bros . T . T . Hurdicker I . P . M Prov . Grand Sword Bearer , J . Kinscy J . W ., Oates Kushton Treas ., T . H Stott Secretary , A . G . Bryce S . D ., T . D . Lightfoot J . D ., J . T . Whittle D . C ., Saml . Kew I . G ., John Fairbaim , Arthur tiutcliffj , R . H . Whatham , and J . H . Crowther Stewards , Wm . Boden P . M . Charity Representative , and others .

We notice that the Lodge summons bears an excellent quotation from one of the wo-ks of the late Bro . Dr . Oliver . It is as follows : — " Be very cautious whom you recommeid as a Candidate for initiation ; one false step on this point may bo fatal . If you introduce a disputatious person — confusion will be produced which may end in the dissolution of the Lodge . If you have a good Lodge , keep it select . Great numbers are not always beneficial . "
