CALCARIA LODGE .

AN addition to the roll of Lodges in the Province of West Yorkshire was made on the . 17 th inst ., when the Calcaria Lodge , No . 2677 , was consecrated at Tadcaster ,, by Bro . J . C . Malcolm Deputy Provincial Grand Master . For sorrie time past the Brethren residing in the Tadcaster district have been actively engaged in trying to form a new Lodge , and through their efforts a Charter was granted to the

following Brethren , who were subsequently appointed to the different Offices here stated : Bro . W . Sykes W . M ., W . Galium S . W ., J . Crow J . W ., H . H . Eiley-Smith Treasurer , F , W . Halliwell P . M . Secretary , H . Bromet S . D ., C . N . Goode J . D ., E . Pickersgill I . G ., T . Dunldp Tyler , and W . B . Gockerlyhe P . M .. and J . Eickards P . M .

The petition for the Charter was supported by the Philanthropic Lodge , Leeds ; the Eboracum Lodge , York ; and the Olicaha Lodge , Ilkley . A convenient Lodge room has been secured , which has been handsomely decorated under the

direction of Bro . W . Watson P . P . G . S . W ., of Leeds . The ceremony was regarded with considerable interest by the Brethren of West and North and East Yorkshire , and there was a large attendance .

The Lodge room' hot being sufficiently capacious for the large number of visitors , it was arranged that the consecration ceremony should be carried out in the Court House , which was arrangel for the purpose . The Brethren having assembled , the

Provincial Grand Officers entered . The chair was occupied by the Deputv Provincial Grand Master Bro . J . C . Malcolm , with Bro . W . Watson P . P . G . S . W . acting as S . W ., and Bro . J . Dyson P . P . G . D . C . as J . W . Bros . J . E . Fawcett P . G . D C . 1214 , and J . Best D . P . G . D . C . 302 were the Directors of Ceremonies . The

devotional portions of the ceremony were taken by the Eev . Canon Crenier and the Eev . F . E . Harrison Prov . G . Chaplains . The anthem , " Behold how good and pleasant " was excellently sung by Bro . W . H . Dawson , of York Cathedral .

The Deputy Provincial Grand Master , in an address to the Brethren , remarked that Freemasonry was making satisfactory progress in West Yorkshire , so far as the establishment of new Lodges was concerned . That was the filth Consecration which had been performed since the present Provincial Grand Master

Calcaria Lodge.

took charge of the Provihcei So far the new Lodges had shown that there was a necessity for their establishment , for they had hot interfered with the proper working of pre-existing Lodges , and , whai ; was of more concern to them as Freemasons , the social position of the Brethren had been maintained . With regard to

that Lodge , the Prov . Grand Master was fully satisfied on the point of necessity . In the town of Tadcaster there was a population of 2 , 300 , while in the surrounding district the inhabitants numbered 10 , 000 , among whom were many Masons who found it difficult to attend to their Masonic duties at Leeds

or York , which were the nearest towns in which Lodges were held . There was an impression that there was formerly a Lodge at Tadcaster , but no record of it was known to exist . Strange as it might seem , the earliest Lodge in the district was held at H & fewood , in 1762 , but that no longer existed . Another was constituted at Knaresborough , in 1769 , which ceased to exist in 1792 ; and another lived from 1795 to 1851 ; while the Alfred

Lodge , at Wetherby , was formed in 1780 , and died in 1792 . It would be an interesting study for the Masonic historian to endeavour to discover the reason those Lodges had such , a brief tenure 6 f life . The Deputy Provincial Grand Master reviewed the historic connection of Tadcaster with various stirring epochs of the country , and concluded by congratulating the Brethren on the peculiar and fortunate position in which they were placed .

The ancient ceremony of consecration was most impressively performed by the Deputy , who , at the conclusion , proceeded to instal Bfp . W . Sykes as the first Worshipful Master of the Lodge . The solo , " Be thou faithful , " was effectively sung by Bro . Monaghan . A banquet was afterwards held in the Girls School room , it which the newly-installed W . M . presided . —" Yorkshire Post . "

The Annual Dinner and Musical Festival of the Evening Star Lodge of Instruction , No . 1719 , will be held at the St . George ' s Hall , Carholnie Eoad , Catford , on Tuesday next , 30 th inst ., at 6 . 30 p . m ., when Bro . James Speller P . M . P . Z . P . P . G . D . Essex Preceptor will occupy the chair . Bro . G . W . Beste P . M . 507 ( Orchard House , Perry Hill , S . E . ) is the Secretary , and will supply any further information that may be desired .
