Secretary ; the brethren knew how the duties had been performed More than that he has always exerted himself for the pood of the thre » Masonio Charities . Bro . Mortlock sang " My Old Friend John . ' Bro . Mann , on rising to reply , was enthusiastically cheered . It waone of the proudest moments of his life to receive such a valuabl * presentation , and the testimonial on vellum waa indeed an
agreeabhsurprise . He felt a great pleasure in hearing the kind word * spoken by the W . M ., and his old and valued friend Bro . Mortlock . Mention had been made to the Masonio Charities . The Industry Lodge was a very old one , and , he was glad to say , a flonrishinj . ' one . He had been pleased to represent it when £ 2 , 000 was given at a Festival , now wo can fret together £ 12 . 000 . The
W . M . next proposed "The Visitors . " Bro . Kelly replied iu a very excellent speech ; the other visitors severally followed ; every onepaid a just compliment to Bro . Mann for his Masonic qualifications , and regard for the Charities , and expressed the pleasure they felt at witnessing the presentation he so well deserved . Tho W . M . then proposed the toast of the Committee of the Festival Fund . The
thanks of the brethren wero due to Bro . Dyer I . P . M ., who was not only the promoter , but also the Treasurer of the Fund , and to Bro . Seex P . M ., who was the Seo . The other P . M . ' s had also lent their valuable assistance . He coupled with tho toast the names of the Past Masters . Bro . Skeen then sang " Tho Old Mill Stream . " Bro . Dyer , as one of the Committee , and also & Past Master , was pleased to respond . With regard to the testimonial , it was a labonr of love .
Bro . Mann is thoroughly appreciated , not only as a P . M . and Sec , but also as a good representative of the Charities . He is one whom all would be pleased to follow , and were , the testimonial six times its value , he would be justly entitled to it . Bro . Mann followed . Not only he did not know from where the testimonial emanated , but he was extremely surprised to see the one on vellum . Bros . Seex and Hook also replied . The toast of the Wardens followed , and , having been responded to , the Tyler's toast was given .
Confidence Lodge of Instruction , No . 193 . —No doubt owing to the important meeting at Grand Lodge , there was an unusually small attendance at this Lodge , on Wednesday , tho 25 th inst . After the Lodge had been duly opened , and tho minutes of the previous meeting confirmed , Bro . Ager , who occupied the chair , rehearsed the first ceremony , in which duty he was ably assisted bv Bros . Jessie
S . W ., F . Croaker J . W ., E . Gottheil P . M . Preceptor , J . K . Pitt Secretary , Abell S . D ., Walker J . D ., Beattie I . G ., Christopher Tyler ; Bro . Benson acted as candidate . The chair was then vacated in favour of B * o . D . Posener , who worked the ceremony of raising , having Bro . Ager for candidate . Tho latter then resumed tho position of W . Gotfcheil , in proposing a vote of thanks to Ero . Ager , for the manner in which the duties of the evening had been conducted , said it was the usual practice in this , and he believed i * every Lodgo of Instruction , as an encouragement to those who attempted , for the first time , to perform the duties of Master , to pass and record a vote of thanks . In this instance the compliment was well deserved . Bro . Ager has only
been a Mason since last December , and taking that fact into consideration , it must be confessed that his work has been done iu a highly creditable manner , better , indeed , than many a one who occupied the position of W . M . in a regular Lodge . In fact , upon second thoughts , the comparison is scarcely just , as we know there are a great many who are honoured with the most prominent position in the Lodge ,
who have bnt a hazy notion of the duties . Bro . Ager ' s working showed a perfect appreciation of what was required of him . Tho W . M . expressed his thanks . He felt scarcely satisfied with himself , and thought he might have done much better . It would , however , be his aim to become more perfect , ancl on the next occasion on which he should have the honour to occupy the position of Master , he hoped
to be able to do his duties more creditably . On Wednesday next , the fifteen sections will be worked . Bro . T . Turquand P . M . will preside . Although the time of meeting ( 7 p . m . ) has not been altered , several brethren have expressed a wish to assemble at 6 . 30 , so that all the preliminaries might be arranged and disposed of before the bulk of members arrived . Those who are able to do so are therefore invited to be present at 6 . 30 .

funds . The Right Worshipful Deputy Provincial Grand Master ( Bro . W . Hickman ) made the presentation , iu the presence of a lar ^ e assembly of the members , a . nd in some well chosen remarks referred to the pleasure it afforded him , as the oldest Past Master there that evening , to tender to another old Past Master some slight , yet tangible
recognition of the services ho had rendered in his capacity of treasurer to the Lodge—a position which ho had long and most honourabl y filled ; while the admirable manner in which ho had carried out his duties , and the courtesy and kindness he bad invariabl y manifested towards all with whom he came in contact , rendered him thoroughly

loserving of any compliment it was in their power to pay him . He xpressed the hope that he might long b » spared toaasistin promoting he comfort and welfare of those with whom he was associated . Bro . Furber , in a brief but feeling reply , assured thoso assembled that

The evening was enlivened by some excellent singing by tho brethren , aud a reading by Bro . Stevens , Bro . Barnett kindly presiding at the piauo .
The widow of the late Bro . Vause having been left with nine daughters , one of whom , being a candidate for admission to the Girls' School , it was determined that the Lodge should support her , after which tho brethren separated . The visitors were Bros . Hewlett 141 , Barnett and Salmon 185 , Wood 193 , 699 , & o .
Upton Lodge of Instruction , No . 1227 , met at Bro . Bolton ' s , King and Queen , Norton Folgate , on Friday , 20 th inst . Present—Bros . Conch W . M ., Powell S . W ., Fenner J . D ., Hallett I . G ., and an average number of regular
attendants . The first ceremony was rehearsed , Bro . B . Goldberg acting as candidate . The W . M . then performed , for the first time , the ceremony of raising in a very satisfactory manner , Bro . Hugget being candidate . A suggestion was made to vote £ 5 to the Benevolent Institution for tho Aged . Bro . Barnes , the Treasurer , objected to this , and stated that when tho affairs of tbe Eastern Star Lodge of
Instruction were transferred to the newly-formed " Tredegar , " ho applied to Bro . Terry to forward tho proxies to which trio former was entitled in the name of the latter . Bro . Terry retnsed on the ground that , by the act of transference , the " Eastern Star" had ceased to exist . This he ( Bro . Barnes ) totally denied . The books , furniture , and members all remaided intact , and , in reality , nothing
was changed except now that the Lodge works nnder the authority of the Tredegar Lodge , aud the name has naturally been altered . Bro . Terry ' s refusal may possibly be in strict conformity with the letter of the law , and sharp practice in such cases may be customary . Such treatment , however , is far from liberal , and he would advise the brethren , taking all the choamstances into consideration , to be
chary as to the voting of any sums to that Institution , at any rate , until something more has been said and ascertained upon the subject . Bro . Geo . Holiington was very much surprised that the proxies should havefceeu withheld , seeing that they are no expense wuatever to the Institution , aud cause no more trouble than the writing of the address . He should certainly oppose any proposition to vote money
to the Institution until such time when the matter shall have been lully and satisfactorily explained aud settled . It was announced that at the next meeting Bro . Jonathan Taylor P .
