Evening Star Lodge, No. 1719.
1 st Steward , Edward Hyde 2 nd Steward , Charlos T . Speight Tyler . The " parts" of Senior Deacon and Junior Deacon wore apportioned respectively to the worthy brethren who held the emblems of Treasurer and Secrotary , but wo question whether this " doubling " is conformable with tho Book of Constitutions ; perhaps somo of our correspondents may feel inclined to givo ns their
views on this point . Doubtless the reason why members of Evening Star adopt this course is , that they desire Officers to go forward in rotation for tho Master ' s chair , bnt we repeat wo scarcely think they aro in order . Bro . Sugg then delivered tho addresses , and on taking his seat was complimented by the W . M . and visitors for tho ability he had displayed . On notice of motion by Bro . J . AV . Sugg D . C , a
P . M . ' s jewel was proposed to be given to Bro . Thos . N . Kirkham on hi 3 leaving tho chair , as a mark of respect from tho members . This was seconded by the W . M . Bro . John Aird , and unanimously agreed to ; Whereupon the presentation was formally made , and a suitable acknowledgment offered by Bro . Kirkham . Three new members wero then proposed , and tho Lodge closed , and was adjourned to tho
fourth Tuesday in March 1880 . The brethren and their guests now sat down to a capital banquet , which Bro . Best personally superintended ; ho was ably seconded by bis lieutenant , Bro . Dawkins , and justice was done to the good things provided . The after proceedings were of a highly gratifying character , tho W . M . presiding in a hearty and genial spirit ; the toasts were ably introduced , and
heartily acknowledged . Bro . Filer replied for the Grand Officers , and expressed regret that the ill-healfch of Bro . John Hervy Grand Secretary had prevented the attendance of that highly esteemed Mason . Bro . Kirkham proposed tho health of the AV . M ., who in his reply modestly remarked that ho would strive to uphold the dignity of the Lodgo , and respect tho wishes of its members . For the
Visitors Bro . Peirce acknowledged tho indebtedness of those present for tho courtesy and hospitality shown them . Bro . Kirkham responded for tho Past Masters , and the next toast that called for recognition wa 3 the health of the Installing Master . A featnre of the evening was the amusing and witty reply of Bro . Sugg , who for the nonce assumed tho character of Mrs . Gamp , and introduced
into his speech the peculiarities of that estimable lady . Wo should have liked to reproduce his verses in extenso , but pressure on onr space precludes our so doing . The Masonic Charities wero not overlooked , and Bro . AVinn in reply ably advocated their claims . The worthy Treasurer descanted ably on the duties pertaining to his office , most impressively urging ou the members that they should
never permit him to allow them to get in arreai' 3 with their subscriptions . Bro . AV . Sugg acknowledged the honour tbat had been paid the Officers by tho recognition tho Worshipful Master mado of thoir services , aud then Bro . Speight was called on for the final toast . Through some slight misunderstanding , a double company of musical
artistes assembled ; however , they were brothers , and in a brotherly spirit joined heart and voice to mako the evening pass off pleasantly . Ifc would be useless to ennnmcrate all the good songs , & c , that were sung , wo will therefore specially mention Bro . Edward Wharton ' s " Tho Mariners ; " Bro . H . Do Sollu's "Sally in onr Allev ; " Bvo .
Edwin Moss ' s "Only for thee ; " Bro . Charles Ohren ' s "Tho Gauntlet ; " the duet "Albion , " by Bros . Moss and Wharton . Miss Jessio Royd was in capital voice , and Mi-s Belville contributed to tho enjoyment of the gnosts . All were indebted to Bro . II . De Holla , who acted most efficiently as accompanyist .
