CONSECRATION OF THE WANDERERS CHAPTER , No . 1604 .

SOME time since an application was mado by tho members of the Wanderers' Lodge for a warrant for a Chapter . Tho application was , however , deferred , as the Lodge had not boon established long enough to accord with tho regulations of Grand Chapter . At tho same time it was clearly shown that the majority of the members of tho Lodge were anxious for the formation of tho Chapter . The

members were mostly military men , and non-commissioned oflieers , who might at any timo bo required to go on foreign service . Under these exceptional circumstances Grand Chapter reconsidered the matter , and tho warrant was granted . Tho M . E . Comp . Lieut .-Gou . J . S . Brownrigg , C . B ., G . S . Surrey , was appointed as Consecrating Officer , and ho was assisted by Ex . Comp . Rev . R . J . Simpson

P . A . S . S . G . Chapter . The Principals designate were Comps . T . II . Meredith M . E . Z ., W . J . Parish II ., i . ndT . R . Mclllwham J . The Comps . assembled on Tuesday , the 19 th inst ., at Freemasons' Hall , Great Queen-street . Comp . Licnt .-Gcu . J . S . Brownrigg , C . B ., occupied tho chair of M . E . Z ., H . Reed H ., and Rev . R . J . Simpson J ., while Comp . C . A . Cottebruno P . Z . acted ns D . C . The Chapter was then formally

consecrated , and Comp . Brownrigg proceeded to instal the Principals . Comps . T . II . Meredith M . E . Z ., VV . J . Parish II ., and T . R . Mclllwham J . On the re-admission of the Comps ., the appointment of Officers took place : —W . II . Bird S . E ., G . Boulton S . N ., F . J . Wray P . S ., Bartcn

IstAsst ., Leslie 2 nd Asst ., Fuller Treas ., Lachlan Janitor . Tho M . E . Z . said ho was pleased to see Comp . John Hervey G . S . E . They wero now a constituted chapter , and ho would bo pleased to propose that M . E . Comp . Lient .-General Brownrigg be elected an honorary member , and that tho best thanks of the Chapter bo accorded to him ; tho same to be recorded on the minutes . This

proposition was seconded by Comp . Parish , who personally thanked Comp . Brownrigg for the assistance given by him at Graud Chapter in procuring the warrant for their Chapter . Comp . Brownrigg warmly thanked the Companions for their kiudness ; he had had 4 G years of soldiering , and his association with this Chapter would be to him a source of gratification . It was then proposed by tho M . E . Z .

and seconded by Comp . Parish that the Rev . R . J . Simpson bo elected an honorary member . The beautiful words nttered by that Rev . Companion had been a source of pleasure to every one present , aud would never be effaced from their memories . Rev . R . J . Simpson thanked tho Companions for tho compliment . Comp . C . A . Cottehouse and John Hervey G . S . E . were also elected honorary members .

Ten propositions for exaltation and two for joining were announced , and the Chapter was closed . An excellent banquet was provided by Bro . A . Best , ably superintended b y Bro . E . Dawkins . Tho M . E . Z . presided , and proposed the customary toasts . Whatever may bo our rank or station we owo a debt of gratitude to our Order and to our Queen , aud this we should ever bo mindful of . In

giving the health of the Grand Officers the M . E . Z . said they had a distinguished member of Grand Chapter present , whoso name would bo prominently and deservedly brought forward as the Consecrating Officer ; they had also present , Comp . Hervey G . S . E ., who it was always a pleasure to meet . Comp . Hervey thanked tho M . E . Z . He regretted not having been present at tho ceremony .

Two years since he consecrated tho Wanderers' Lodge ; it had been well conducted , and the work had been efficiently carried out . If the Chapter would follow in the footsteps of the Lodge , he was sure it also would bo a success . Tho health of tho Consecrating Officer and his Assistants was next most happily given by the M . E . Z .

Lieut .-Gcn . Brownrigg held a distinguished position in Her Majesty ' s Service ; he had had tho valuable assistance of Comps . Simpson and Cottebruno . Each had rendered help in procuring the Warrant , which he trusted wonld never bo sullied while iu tho possession of thoso to whom it had been ontrnstetl . Ho then referred to tho

exceptional circumstances under which the Warrant bad been granted , and concluded by calling on thoso present to do fnll honour to the toast . Comp . Licut .-Gcn . Brownrigg responded ; he explained the rnlo of Giand Chapter , which required that a Lodge should bo iu existence three years before an application for a Chapter in ' connection with it could be entertained . Ho considered this a wise rule ,

and had not the members shown him substantial reasons be could not havo supported their application . As military men , they knew tho advantages of discipline , and he trusted they would carry out the duties of the Chapter as well as they bad done those of the Lodge . Before taking his seat ho would propose the health of the M . E . Z ., Comp . T . II . Meredith , and Prosperity to the Wanderers' Chapter .

Comp . Meredith said tho kiud remarks of Licut .-Gcnoral Brownrigg had been a source of sincere pleasure to him . With the assistunce ° of those who wero associated with him iu the Chapter , ho hud endeavoured to make the occasion of their Consecration Meeting a success and personall y ho was much gratified at the result . ThtTnext toast given was that of tho II . aud J ., Comps . Parish mid Mclllwham ; and

both acknowledged the compliment . Tho health of the "Visitors wag responded to by Comps . Liudus and E . P . Albeit . FUNERAL OF THE LATE BRO . BENTLEY SHAW , J . P ., P . G . D ., P . D . G . M . WEST YORKS , & c .

THE Freemasons of West Yorkshire assembled in largo numbers on Saturday last to attend tho funeral of onr departed brother . Most of tho Lodges of the Province were represented by some of their members , many travelling considerable distances to pay a last tribute of respect to the memory of this distingnished Mason . Before being marshalled into processional order , the brethren wero addressed by the Provincial Grand Master , Sir Henry Edwards , who after stating

that he did not intend to formally open a Lodge , said : —I cannot allow this occesion to pass without first saying a word or two with regard to the very sad loss wo havo sustained by tho death of our friend and brother Bentley Shaw . I do not know any mau in the county of York who was more respected than ho was , especially in his own immediate district , whero ho was so thoroughly

beloved by all men , women , and children , and moro especially by his Masonic brethren , that I do not see that we can ever "look npon his liko again . " He was always kind and conrteons to everybody . If a man had him for his friend ho had seenred a friend for lifo . But wo all know perfectly that what has happened to him mnst happen to ns all—in a very short span ,

probably , everyone of us will bo called henco to the presence of his Maker , and I do besoech you all—I entreat you—I do not want to read you a sermon—to make the best of your timo whilst it remains to yon . Tho timo is short , and tho nearer we approach to our destinies the more seriously wo onght to think . This is indeed a very sad ceremony , for wo have been accustomed so long to look

upon his benevolent face , and to see the manner in which he treated us . As a father no man ever surpassed him in affection . One of tho greatest blows ho ever received in life was by the death of his eldest son , and I do not think he evor got over it . I am now about to go and see his widow—I dread tho ordeal . Wo are all subject to unpleasantness of this kind ; I say unpleasantness , because it is

pecnliarly painfnl to my feelings ; but it is our duty that we should submit to everything Providence has fore-ordered . All I can say is that I shall give to tho widow an assurance of the best feeling towards her and her children ; I shall give her an assurance that each and all of yon ; that no class of men on tho face of tbo earth moro truly sympathise and condole with her than the brethren of

West Yorkshire . With these few words , Brethren , I think for tho present we will say adieu . Bro . T . W . Tew J . P . D . P . G . M .: I can only say that tho words of tho Grand Master will find a responsive echo in the hearts of every one of us . The Masonic career of Bro . Shaw , since bo became a member of the Craft in 1846 , has been one of pleasure , joy , and

satisfaction . However , it has pleased the Great Architect of the Universe to take him suddenly away . But he has left to all of us a legacy , the worth of which I hopo wo shall imitate , and that his virtnes will ever be remembered by every ono of ns . I am suro we are all pleased to see so many rally round the Grand Master this morning , to accompany tho remains of our dear Brother Bentley

Shaw to their last resting place . Bro . John Wordsworth P . P . G . D . C . and Bro . Joseph Bottom ] ey P . M . then marshalled the brethren into processional order , and they proceeded to Woodfield House , Lockwood , tho residence of the deceased , where they joined tho relatives and friends already assembled there . At noon the complete procession was formed , and

proceeded to Lockwood Churchyard . The assembly comprised , besides the Freemasons , representatives of the Licensed Victuallers Protection Association , the employes of the firm of which Bro . Shaw was a member , several of the Clergy of the district , the Church , wardens of Lockwood , representatives of the Lockwood Mechanics ' Institute , tho Borough and Conuty Magistrates , and several other

influential gentlemen of the district , as well as numerous carriages of ladies avid gentlemen who were unable personally to attend . The greater part of the route to the church was lined with people , and at most of tho houses the blinds were drawn down out of respect for the deceased gentleman . On arriving at the church , the

proccssion opened out , and while the body was being conveyed into the building tho " Dead March" was played . After the scrvico the coffin was convoyed to tho family vault , and the remains of tho deceased placed therein , the service at the grave side being read b y tho Rev . D . J . Mackimm .

probably , everyone of us will bo called henco to the presence of his Maker , and I do besoech you all—I entreat you—I do not want to read you a sermon—to make the best of your timo whilst it remains to yon . Tho timo is short , and tho nearer we approach to our destinies the more seriously wo onght to think . This is indeed a very sad ceremony , for wo have been accustomed so long to look

upon his benevolent face , and to see the manner in which he treated us . As a father no man ever surpassed him in affection . One of tho greatest blows ho ever received in life was by the death of his eldest son , and I do not think he evor got over it . I am now about to go and see his widow—I dread tho ordeal . Wo are all subject to unpleasantness of this kind ; I say unpleasantness , because it is

pecnliarly painfnl to my feelings ; but it is our duty that we should submit to everything Providence has fore-ordered . All I can say is that I shall give to tho widow an assurance of the best feeling towards her and her children ; I shall give her an assurance that each and all of yon ; that no class of men on tho face of tbo earth moro truly sympathise and condole with her than the brethren of

Shaw , since bo became a member of the Craft in 1846 , has been one of pleasure , joy , and

satisfaction . However , it has pleased the Great Architect of the Universe to take him suddenly away . But he has left to all of us a legacy , the worth of which I hopo wo shall imitate , and that his virtnes will ever be remembered by every ono of ns . I am suro we are all pleased to see so many rally round the Grand Master this morning , to accompany tho remains of our dear Brother Bentley

Shaw to their last resting place . Bro . John Wordsworth P . P . G . D . C . and Bro . Joseph Bottom ] ey P . M . then marshalled the brethren into processional order , and they proceeded to Woodfield House , Lockwood , tho residence of the deceased , where they joined tho relatives and friends already assembled there . At noon the complete procession was formed , and

proceeded to Lockwood Churchyard . The assembly comprised , besides the Freemasons , representatives of the Licensed Victuallers Protection Association , the employes of the firm of which Bro . Shaw was a member , several of the Clergy of the district , the Church , wardens of Lockwood , representatives of the Lockwood Mechanics ' Institute , tho Borough and Conuty Magistrates , and several other

influential gentlemen of the district , as well as numerous carriages of ladies avid gentlemen who were unable personally to attend . The greater part of the route to the church was lined with people , and at most of tho houses the blinds were drawn down out of respect for the deceased gentleman . On arriving at the church , the

proccssion opened out , and while the body was being conveyed into the building tho " Dead March" was played . After the scrvico the coffin was convoyed to tho family vault , and the remains of tho deceased placed therein , the service at the grave side being read b y tho Rev . D . J . Mackimm .
