With lull Masonic and civil honours the memorial stone of the New North Bridge , Edinburgh , was laid on Monday by Lord Provost McDonald , who , in performing the ceremony , referred to the history of the old bridge and the expansion of the city ,

which had necessitated a new and wider structure . The company thereafter adjourned to the Music Hall , where luncheon was served . About 2 , 000 Brethren assembled and took part in the ceremony , congregating from as far north as Dingwall , and representing about 120 Lodges .

COMMEKCING with fche June part , " Cassell ' s Family Magazine" will provide Burglary Insurance for its readers , free of charge . The same number will contain the first instalment of a new serial story by Mr . Max Pemberton , entitled " A Puritan ' s Wife , " illustrated by Mr . Sidney Paget .

WE understand tbat in the People's edition of " Cassell ' s Natural History , ' about to be issued in weekly parts , a series of new full-page plates will be given . These will be prepared from photographs of animals which are being specially taken ( under the direction of a Fellow of the Society ) afc the Zoological Gardens , London , including the latest arrivals .

The Emperor of Germany and the Czar of Russia have each accepted a copy of Mr . R . Kearton ' s recent work on " British Birds' nests , " illustrated from photographs taken direct from nature by O . Kearton . So great has been the demand for the work , that Messrs . Cassell and Company have already reprinted it .

A CHEAP edition of "In a conning tower ; or , How I took'H . M . S . Majestic' into action , " by Mr . H . O . Arnold-Forster , M . P ., is about to be issued by Messrs . Cassell and Company . This popular story of modern ironclad warfare has already passed through many editions in its more expensive form , and translations have appeared in French , Spanish , and Italian . Ifc is furnished with original illustrations by Mr . W . H . Overend , and the cheap edition will contain a new preface by its author .

IN writing to Messrs . Cassell and Company in reference to the reproduction of his picture , " Drawing lots for the Guelph succession at Celle , A . D 1592 , " in " Boyal Academy pictures , " Mr . Eyre Crowe , A . R . A ., says : " It is pleasant to the painter to see his work turned out so flatteringly , yefc so truthfully . " Sir John Millais' noted picture , " A Forerunner , " is being reproduced as a special plate , and will appear as the frontispiece to the complete volume of "Koyal Academy pictures , " which will be issued in a few days .
