Consecration Of The Hampton Court Mark Lodge, No. 448.

brethren attending the inaugural meeting of the Province of Middlesex , wlvch was held immediately after the conclusion of the consecration of the new lodge . The founders of the new lodge , all of whom were present , are Bros . A . Stewart Brown , Sir Reginald Hanson , Bart ., M . P . ; J . Ernest Lane , Frederick Mead , Sir J . B . Monckton , Major Clifford Probyn , Frank Richardson , Henry Wm . Roberts , J . M . Small , and H . W . Seager .

The Consecrating Officer having taken the chair , and appointed his officers pro tern ., the lodge was opened and a hymn sung . The DEPUTY GRAND MASTER then briefly addressed the brethren on the motive of the meeting , explaining that they had assembled to consecrate a new lodge , to be added to the new Province of Middlesex . It was , he thought , a very good thing for the new province to start with the addition of another lodge , and they all hoped as the province went on it would continue to increase in the number of lodges , and in fidelity and charity .

The founders signified their approval of the officers named in the petition and warrant , and the following oration was delivered by Bro . Rev . J . STUDHOLME BROWNRIGG , Prov . Grand Master Bucks :

The Mark Degree is constantly bringing before us the existence of one special and unavoidable feature in all human work . Every word is marked with an impress which , for good or evil , attaches a responsibility to its author . The Great Overseer of the Universe gave his sanction to this universal condition when He permitted it to be recorded that everything that He had made was very good . The first recorded mark is the beauty of God ' s fair creation before man had blurred and

altered it . And so as God permitted and taught man himself to work , He left to man the power of making that work good or bad , and obliged him to accept for it an individual and personal responsibility , man could not discover what He had wrought ; He was forced to leave upon it the mark which for aVA eternity would connect it with himself for good or for evil . The mark which the operative Mason left upon the stone was an outward and visible sign of . an universal truth .

From the moment of his admission the Craftsman indented with a particular mark every stone on which he had laboured . Most stones bore two marks , the Master ' s and the Craftsman ' s . In structures which ( like some of our English Cathedrals ) were long in building , you can trace for many generations the progress of the Mason in the stone . From the inexperienced Craftsman to the accomplished Master . The work changes and becomes more important , the

Craftsman becomes the Master , but the mark remains unchanged . And so my friends on our work in God's world , on every action , word , age , even on every thought we are leaving a mark which fixes upon us the responsibility of it either for good or evil . Our earlier efforts may be poor and clumsy , but if they are honest strivings after perfection we need not be ashamed to own them . As life . advances the work becomes more serious and more important . On the advancing work we place the unchanged mark , and time will prove its value . It maybe

unseen , unknown , and unappreciated , but it is contributing wisdom , strength , and beauty to the Spiritual Edifice , it is receiving daily the Great Overseer ' s mark of approval . The one great object of our lives then should be in our work , wherever that work may be , to do nothing which is unworthy of ourselves or of the great end for which we were ourselves created—the honour and glory ot Him who is not only the Great Architect of the Universe , but also the great Overseer of all His childrens' labours .

The ceremony was proceeded with , and the new lodge was dedicated and constituted with the customary solemnity . The musical portions were rendered under the direction of Bro . H . Schartau . Bro . C . F . Matier , P . G . W ., G . Sec , assumed the chair , and installed Bro . Sir John B . Monckton as the first Master . The following officers were invested : Bros .
