The editor of the Freemason is always glad to receive communications from brethren who are in a position to send reports of Masonic meetings , but he is reluctantly compelled to omit a large number on account of their length , especially reports of regular meetings , which as a rule have no special interest beyond the circle in which they occur .

In many cases details are given which should only , appear on the minutes . If our numerous and valued correspondents would remember that the space at our disposal will not admit of even a moiety of the reports appearing regularly , it will be seen that the chances of insertion are much increased by brief notices .

announced the deaths of three male annuitants and the regular business had been disposed of , the vote ot thanks to Bro . James Terry for his untiring efforts in connection with the late Jubilee Festival was formally presented to that brother by the Chairman . The

thanks , which have been engrossed on vellum and very beautifully illuminated , are in album form , and will no doubt be cherished by Bro . Terry , noJ only as a memento of the occasion and of the kindness of the Committee , but also as a beautiful work of art .

* * * We have also to report that at the same meeting the resignation of Bro . Dr . H . J . Strong , A . G . D . of C , who has held office for upwards of 30 years as Hon . Surgeon to the Institution , was accepted with the deepest regret , and , on the recommendation of the House Committee , Bro . Dr . Waite was appointed his successor .

At the same time the Committee of Management , with a view to marking their sense of the valuable services which Bro . Dr . Strong had rendered to the inmates of the Asylum at Croydon , appointed him Honorary Consulting Physician . We heartily congratulate Bro . Dr . Strong on being the recipient of a compliment which he so fully merits .

The annual meeting of the Prov . G . Lodge of Hertfordshire , which is usually held in the latter half of July , but which was this year postponed in consequence of the General Election being held in that month , took place at Hatfield on Tuesday , under the banner of the Cranbourne Lodge , No . 1580 . Bro . T . F . Halsey , M . P ., Prov . G . Master , presided , and

there was what may be considered , under the circumstances , a fair attendance . Prov . G . Lodge voted the usual , £ 10 towards the expenses of the entertaining lodge ; ^ 21 to the Royal Masonic Institution for Girls , to be placed on the list of Bro . C . E . Keyser , J . G . D ., P . P . G . W ., as Steward ; and j £ io to the Hertfordshire Convalescent Home , St . Leonard's-on-Sea . A report of the proceedings will appear next week .

# # # Our American brethren must enjoy themselves when they cross the herring pond , and pay us a visit . A few years since Bro . General Shryock , Grand Master of Maryland , came over to England , and received a most cordial welcome from the brethren with whom he

came in contact , but more especially from the Anglo-American Lodge , whose main purpose is to offer a Masonic home to brethren from the United States . Bro . Shryock is now back again among us , and , as will be seen from our report elsewhere , was entertained at a banquet at the Criterion Restaurant , one evening last

week , by the W . M . ( Bro . Hancock ) and members of No . 2191 , the proceedings throughout being of a very enthusiastic character , while the speech of the distinguished visitor was cheered to the echo . ft is impossible we can have too many of these interchanges oi visits among Craftsmen .

* * « The Philadelphia Keystone , speaking of the resumption of work by the lodges after the summer vacation , the greater number of persons who present themselves as candidates for membership , and the possibility , in consequence of Worshipful Masters being overworked , that the ceremony in respect of each applicant may be

incompletely carried out , very sensibly remarks : "It will be a sad state of things if initiates go half finished to advancement , when that ceremony is likewise half done . Great care must be taken to prevent any omission in the ceremony by want of time . There must be time taken by every lodge to perform all that is required by the regulations and laws of Masonry to the proper administration of the ritual .

The Grand Chapter of Pennsylvania held its Quarterly Convocation at the Masonic Hal ) , Philadelphia , on Saturday , the 8 th ult ., under the presidency of M . E . Comp . Alexander H . Morgan , G . H . P . The report of Comp . Charles E . Meyer , G . Sec , showed a

total membership of 14 , 790 , or 531 in excess of the return at the corresponding period of 1891 . There was a full attendance , and Comp . E . A . Tennis , G . King , assisted by the Grand Officers , exemplified a portion of the ritual to the manifest pleasure of all present .

LENNOX BROWNE LODGE , No . 2318 . To the Editor of the " Freemason . " Dear Sir and Brother , Many thanks for your excellent report of the meeting of the above lodge , which is , in nearly every respect , a very correct report of the proceedings .

You say , at the end of your report , " that the toast of ' The Treasurer and Secretary ' led to the information that at the next Quarterly Communication in December Bro . J . Pinder , P . M ., would be nominated by Essex for the Grand Treasurership , and the province would be asked to support him with all its power . " This is an error , and should read , " That Bro .

J . Pinder , P . M ., would be nominated for the' Provincial Grand Treasurership of Essex' at the next election , and that the province be asked to support him . 1006 ] — THE SCALD MISERABLE MASONS . Referring to the notes on this subject there is one of the original engravings hanging in the lodge room of No . 280 , at Worcester . A very interesting wood cut of the Procession , and a key or explanation of the Soloman and stately procession of the Scald and

Miserable Masons will be found in William Hone ' s " Every Day Book , " as it was Martialed April iS , Thursday , page 523 . I note in Richard J ackson ' s prospectus for early publication ( price ios . 6 d . ) of Miserable Scald Masons as they were drawn up over against Somerset House in the Strand on April 27 , 1742 . Was there a rehearsal on the 18 th ?

LAMB SMITH . Worcester . 1007 ] I do not know the print to which Bro . Lane alludes in 1004 , though I have heard of it . It refers , doubtless , to the procession which took place on the 27 th April , 1742 . Of this there is a wood-cut in " The Westminster

Journal ; or New Weekly Miscellany , " of Saturday , May 8 th , 1742 , to which is appended a long description ¦ or " Key , " as also a " Masons-Examination . " The print , however , does not tally with Bro . Lane ' s description , so the same procession would seem to have given

rise to at least two distinct representations . In mine , the real Grand Master in his coach and six is galloping past the procession of Miserables as if to get out of range of their jeering as quickly as possible , and the Grand Master has his head out of window urging on the coachman to greater speed . 1008 J A CURIOUS MASONIC MEDAL . In the issue of the Freemason for the 17 th ult . Bro . W . J . Hughan gives an interesting description of a " Beautiful Jewel" ( note 1002 ) that its owner , Bro . H . A . Tobias , had had photographed for him . Continuing his description , Bro . Hughan says the jewel is of solid silver , and the design is similar to the " Grand

Master Depute" of the Grand Lodge of Scotland . This , however , is not quite correct , as his description is that of the collar jewel worn by the R . W . Masters of subordinate lodges under the Grand Lodge of Scotland , and in our laws and constitutions it says the jewels are recommended to be made of silver , and the Master ' s jewel is thus described— " The compasses and

square , segment of circle and Sun —whereas the description given in the same book of the Grand Master Depute's jewel reads : " The jewels of the Grand Lodge are of gold , and may be described as follows ' Grand Master Depute ' s jewel the compasses and square united , pendant lrom a small brilliant star . '" Bro Hughan will thus see that there

is nothing very curious about the jewel except its its inscriptions , and nothing much more valuable than its sentimental associations . By-the-bye , I have , I think , a curious Masonic silver medal that may be thus described : Diameter ijjin bare , border Jin . wide , round the border the initals of the four

points of the compass , Ii at the top , also round the border , extending between N and S , the latin motto " Amor Honor et Justitia . " The centre of the medal contains Masonic emblems , two pillars supporting a level , square and compasses , and Bible , with a ladder running diagonally right across the centre of medal .
