Every arrangement had been made for the comfort of these poor men and women , and a strange assembly they appeared . The broken-down tradesman , the mechanic out of work , the stranded seamstiess , the decayed gentleman , were all represented . A large number of ladies and gentlemen attended to caive for , and wait upon them , and several others were present to sing cr speak . The meal was preceded by a
short seivice , which was thoroughly appreciated . Dinner was served about 12 o ' clock . The following is a list of the gcod things consumed : 544 lbs . roast beef , 700 lbs . plum pudding , seven sacks potatoes , 150 quarterns of bread , and 800 oranges . A Christmas gift ( consisting of a joint of meat , 1 cwt . cnal , and the ingredients for a plum pudding ) was given last week to some 670 poor families in the neighbourhood who are represented from time to time at the various meetings held at the institution , and nearly 700 children are to be entertained at dinner in the first week of the New Year . The cost of these Christmas and New Year treats is defrayed by special collections and donations .

" This play appears to be particularly popular with young ladies home for their holidays , no less than seven schools being represented on Friday last , and making in the aggregate 54 young ladies attending boarding schools in the suburbs . They all seemed to be highly delighted at the peculiar antics of " Miss Brown , " who , as a disguised man in a young ladies' seminary , gets into more hot water in a minute than comes to most men in a lifetime .
