Masonic Notes .

We wish all our readers a Happy ahd successful New Year . The year that has just closed has been , Masonically , a prosperous one ; may that upon which we entered on Wednesday be in all respects and at the very least as prosperous as its predecessors . '

•* » The New Year opens both busily and promisingly with the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution . On Wednesday the usual Entertainment was given to the worthy inmates of the Institution at Croydon . Everything passed off admirably . Thanks to the excellence of the arrangements made by the Secretary and to the

Masonic Notes.

supervision of the Matron in respect of things domestic , and the liberal donations made by the Committee of Management and individual brethren , the day was one of unbroken pleasure , both to the " Old People" and those who visited the Asylum . We shall publish a full account of the proceedings in our next bsue .

* * * Then as regards the work connected with the approaching Festival , the first meeting of the Board of Stewards was held on Thursday , when the usual preliminary arrangements as to fees , election of officers , musical Committee , and so forth , were made . It is also worthy of note that the Board already

numbers upwards of 250 ladies and brethren , and there is little doubt that in the lime that still remains between now and the day appointed for the celebration , Bro . Terry will be able to enlist such additional support as will raise the total strength of the Board to something like the average of the lour or five years that preceded the Jubilee of 1892 Let us hope that the Returns will yield an equal average .

In addition to the Statement of Receipts during the past year which have been furnished by the Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys , and on which , in conjunction with the similar Statements we have received from the Secretaries of the other

Institutions , we have commented in our leading article , Bro . McLeod has forwarded sundry other Statements which enable us to judge of the amazing progress which the School has made under the new regime established ir . i 8 go .

# # * Firstly , as regards the annual income , the average for the lour years—from 1 S 87-1 S 90 , both inclusivewas . £ 13 , 777 ' 7 - 4-d-i while the average for the five years from 1891-95 , both inclusive , is . £ 22 , 237 19 s . ; the difference between the two averages being no less

than £ 8460 is . 8 j . Then , as regards investments , the contrast is even more remarkable . In 18 90 the invested capital of the Institution was £ 17 , 500 ; at the close of 1895 it stands at £ 60 , 775 6 s . id . ; the difference of £ 43 , 27560 ' . id . being the amount invested during the last five years ; the amount invested in 1895 was

^ 9 . 24 9 s . 6 d . At the same time , as our readers have been again and again informed , the work that is being done by the Institution is oa a larger and more efficient scale than ever . That is to say , there are more bo / s in the School now than in 1890 , while the training and

education they receive are on a more extended scale These figures are eminently gratifying , but , above all , those which tell us of the increase that has taken place in the invested capital . # ? *

The regular meeting of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge , No . 2076 , would have taken place , in ordinary circumstances , to-day ( Friday ) , but it will not be held owing , we presume , to the engagements of the brethren

during Christmastide . There will , however , be an emergency meeting on Friday next , the 10 th instant , when Bro . Dr . VV . J . Chetwode Crawley will read a paper entitled , " Notes on Irish Freemasonry , No . IV . The Old Lodge at Bandon . "

* » * We have received a report of the proceedings of the Prov . Grand Lodge of Nottinghamshire , which was held on Thursday , the 12 th ult ., under the presidency of Bro . the Duke of St . Albans , Prov . Grand Master , and at which there was a large attendance of Provincial Officers and the representatives of private lodges . # #

» We have much pleasure in announcing that Bro . Fied . J . VV . Crowe has received a letter from Bro . Sir Francis Knollys to the effect that H . R . H . the Prince of Wales , M . W . G . M ., has been graciously pleased to accept a copy of his ( Bro . Crowe ' s ) '' Irish Master

Mason ' s Handbook . " Bro . Crowe has also been favoured with letters from the M . W . G . M . ( Bro . the Duke of Abercorn ) and the D . G . M . ( Bro . R . W . Shekleton , Q . C . ) , ot Ireland , in which they severally acknowledge with thanks the receipt of the copies he had forwarded for their acceptance . * * *

We have to acknowledge receipt of the Roll of members of the Albert Edward Lodge , No . 1560 , Leicester . The Roll is complete from the establishment of the lodge in November , 1875 , 10 Christmas

18 95 , and has evidently been compiled with the greatest care . The lodge is to be congratulated on being in a position to number among its members so many brethren who have WOP distinction in the ranks of Freemasonry .
