THE EMPEROR WILLIAM OF GERMANY has approved of the proposal to hold a lawn tennis tournament , open to military and naval officers , at Hamburg , on the Sth July next . IN REPLV to a telegram from thc Manchester City Council , the Council of the Royal Agricultural Society have accepted an invitation to hold their annual show in Alanchestcr in the year 1 S 07 .

A COLLECTION * of fine engravings after the works of Sir Edwin Landseer , belonging to the late Duchess of Alontrose , was disposed of at Cluistie's on Wednesday , the sum realised being £ 1737 . IMKI . II MARSHAL Sir J . Lintorn Simmons , who has been appointed Honorary Colonel of the ist Aliddlesex Volunteer ICngineers , will be entertained by the officers of the corps at dinner at their head-quarters on Tuesday next , the 7 th instant .

THE SADLERS' COMPANY havc remitted grants of 100 guineas to the Special Fund of St . Thomas's Hospital , £ ico to the Gordon Boys' Home , and 50 guineas each to the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital , the Royal Eye Hospital , the North-Eastern Hospital for Children , the Dental Hospital , and four other similar institutions .

AIK . FURNESS , M . P ., has made it known to the Mayors of VVest Hartlepool and Hartlepool that he has placed in the hands ot trustees the sum of £ 12 , 500 , to provide pensions for 50 old sesmen resident in the Hartlepools . Should the interest thereon be less than £ . 500 Air . Furness further undertakes during his lifetime to make up the amount so as to ensure £ 10 yearly to each pensioner .

AT A MEETING of the Liverpool City Council , on Wednesday , a letter from a local solicitor was read , in which il was announced that a plot of land comprising 10 S acres , recently laid out as a recreation ground , was presented to the city , but the solicitor was not permitted to divulge the name of the donor . The rents from certain buildings on the land would suffice for its maintenance . The Council gratefully accepted the munificent gift .

THE ABERNEI IIIAN SOCIETY which was established as the Aledical and Philosophical Society , in 1 . S 95 , but altered its name in 1 S 31 , after the death of the eminent surgeon whom it commemorates , celebrated its . 100 th anniversary at St . Bartholomew ' s Hospital on Wednesday . A very interesting collection of relics of Mr . Abernethy was exhibited during the evening and subsequently the members of the Hospital Dramatic Society gave a performance of Maddison Morton's Farce , " A Regular Fix . "

WE ARE very pleased to hear that Bro . George F . Black , cf the Alanchestcr Dramatic Lodge , No . 23 S 7 ( and the son of Bro . 'Ihomas B ack , P . P . G . D ., whose name has always figured so conspicuously in connection with garden paities , theatrical entertainments and concerts for the

benefit of different Charities , especially the East Lancashire Systematic Masonic Educational and Benevolent Institution ) , has been engaged by Bro . Henry Irving . SIIER AK / . UL , Kokan Bey , and other chiefs who led the enemy in the recent Chitral campaign , have been taken prisoners , while Umra Khan , Mohammed Khan and another brother are in Afghanistan , but under the surveillance of the Ameer ' s officers .

THE 831 * 11 anniversary festival of the Licensed Victuallers' School will be held at the Crvstal Palace in the month of luly , and Mr . Theodore H . Watney , of the firm of D . Watney and Son , Limited , has very kindly undertaken to preside .

THE Q UEEN , accompanied bv the Princess Beatrice and Princess Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein , returned from her continental trip on Tuesday . Her Alajesty left Darmstadt on Alonday evening , and , travelling by special train , reached Flushing the following morning . There she embarked on board the Royal yacht for Port Victoria , and thence to Windsor , which was reached the next morning .

THE BARON UE COURCEI ., the French Ambassador , presided at the annual dinner , which was held at the Hotel Mc ' tropole , on Saturday evening last , in aid of the French Hospital and Dispensary in Loneion , the Italian Ambassador and the Swiss Charge el'Affaires being among the guests . THE ANNUAL DINNER of the Press Club was held at Freemasons'Tavern on Saturday evening last . Mr . Edward Pardon , the President , occupied the chair , and among the principal guests were Lord Harris , and Bros . Lord Charles Beresford , Sir Evelyn Wood , Sir Augustus Harris , Sir Arthur Sullivan , the Right Hon . D . Plunket , ALP ., and Naoroji , ALP .

1 HE LATE Duchess of Alontrose s collection of jewels , Src , was disposed of by public auction at Christie ' s Rooms , on Tuesday , there being a very large attendance of buyers and spectators . The excitement was great when her late Grace ' s necklace , composed of 362 fine pearls arranged in seven rows , was put up . The bidding commenced at £ 5000 , and the necklace was ultimately knocked down for £ 11 , 500 .

THE QUEEN * OK THE NETHERLANDS , accompanied by the Oueen Regent , and attended by the members of her suite , drove through the City on Alonday , anel afterwards visited the British Museum . Among those who have called on the illustrious visitors are the Duke of Cambridge , the Russian and French Ambassadors , the Swedish and Norwegian and Danish Ministers , the Prime . Minister , Bro . the Alarquis and Alarchioness of Breadalbane , Lord and Lady Knutsford , and Sir William and Lady Harcourt .

OYER A THOUSAND people were present at the annual gathering at the City Terminus Hotel , in Cannon-street , on Tuesday evening , in aid of the Aletropolitan and City Police Orphanage . The entertainment , which consisted of a ball and concert , was held under the patronage of Bro . the Lord Alayor and the Lady Alayoress , the City Sheriffs , Bro . Sir John B . Monckton , and the Metropolitan and City Commissioners of Police . The arrangements were excellent , and everything went off admirably .

As THE Republic of Nicaragua has refused to give satisfaction to this country for the insults offered to our Hag , and the indignities and injuries inflicted en the British Consul and sundry British subjects , some of the ships of our Pacific Squadron , under Admiral Stephenson , have

taken possession of the Custom House and other government buildings in Corinto , which are now held by a detachment of bluejackets and Alarines . There is every reason to believe , however , that Nicaragua will ultimately yield to the demands of Great Britain .

ON riii-r 19 TH ULT ., a meeting was convened at the Alasonic Hall , Hanley , by Bio . Howson , VV . AL of the Alenturia Lodge , to consider a communication which had been received from the Prov . Grand Secretary asking if the brethren could provide accommodation for the holding of the Prov . Grand Lodge at Hanley . A resolution was

unanimously passed to the effect that the accommodation would be provided . Much disappointment was subsequently experienced when it was stated that the accommodation was required for the meeting of Prov . Grand Lodge at Hanley in 1 S 9 6 , the year not having been mentioned in the letter received by Bro . Howson from the Prov . Grand Secretary . The Prov . Grand Lodge will meet at Walsall on the Sth instant .

ON SATURDAY , the 25 th ult ., the brethren of the Lewis Lodge , No . 11 S 5 , dined together atlhe King ' s Arms Hotel , Wood Green . The VV . AL , Uro . W . T . He . vett presided , and there was a good muster of brethren present . During the course of the evening a pleasing ceremony was performed by the W . M ., who presented to Bro . Row , P . P . AL , a clock , as a mark of esteem in which each is held by the lodge , and as a slight recognition of their long services . Each of the brethren named responded in suitable terms . The proceedings were enlivened by the vocal efforts of several brethren , notable amongst whom was Bro . Alackney , P . The installation festival will be held in the Town Hall on the 17 th inst ., and the binquet at the Swan Hotel .

LORD RUSSELL of Killowen , Lord Chief Justice of England , presided at the festival dinner which was held at the Hotel Aleiropole , on Tuesday evening , in behalf of the City of London Hospital for Diseases of the Chest , the amount of subscriptions and donations announced being £ 1687 .

AT THE annual meeting of the John o' Gaunt Mark Lodge , No . 172 , at Gainsborough on Tuesday , the 23 rd ult ., Bro . B . T . Adlard was installed W . AL , and invested his officers . Bro . Liversidge , P . P . S . G . W ., performed the installation ceremony , and the brethren afterwards held the customary dinner .

IHE 51 ST ANNIVERSARY and distribution of prizes of the Ragged School Union will be held at the Queen ' s Hall , Langham-plice , on Alonday next , the Gth inst .. at 7 p . m ., under the presidency of the Earl of Compton . PRINCESS AIARY ADELAIDE , DUCHESS OK TEe : K , was present at the annual meeting at Haberdashers' Hall on Monday of the Factory Girls' Country Holiday Fund . Bro . Alderman Sir David Evans presided at the meeting and mentioned that during last year 704 girls and women of the poorest class had been enabled by this Fund to enjoy a fortnight ' s rest and recreation in the country .

THE MARRIAGE of the Duke of Aosta and the Princess Helene of France has been postponed in consequence of the accident which recently befellthe Dukeof Orleans . The Duke , however , is reported by the family physician to be going on satisfactorily . The Princess Helene , accompanied by her mother , the Countess de Paris , will leave Southampton this ( F ' riday ) evening for Lisbon , en route ior Seville , where the Duke of Orleans is laid up .

M . 142 C , & c , has returned from a six weeks' tour in Scotland , in many of the principal cities and towns of which country hc , as representative of the Australian Irrigation Colonies , has delivered his instructive and entertaining lecture on "The F ' ruit Groves of Australia , " more particulaily in relation to the important and prospering settlements of Milduras and Kenmark . The exceedingly beautiful limelight photo views by which

his lectures are illustrated , and tne lucid explanations given of thc progress of the settlements , appear to have excited great interest , and press notices are unanimous in their appreciation of our brother ' s efforts . We are very pleased to note the hearty and kindly reception given to Bro . Stevens by our Scottish brethren on sundry occasions , when opportunities offered for his associating with them , in their several lodges .

A RECEPTION was held in the Grafton Galleries in honour of Air . Auguste Manns , who has been the musical conductor at the Crystal Palace for so many years , and who , in that capacity , has rendered such valuable services to the promotion of musical taste in England . AT A MEETING of the Liverpool City Council , on Wednesday , a letter from a local solicitor was read , in which il was announced that a plot of land comprising 10 S acres , recently laid out as a recreation ground , was presented to the city , but the solicitor was not permitted to divulge the name of the donor .
