It enjoyed the distinguished patronage of the late R . W . Prov . G . M ., Sir W . W . Burrell , Bart ., M . Profiting by the experience gained on previous occasions , a capital band of Stewards was appointed , including Bros . V . P . Freeman , Prov . G . Sec . j I . Henderson Scott , Dep .

Annual Festival Of The Brixton Lodge Of Instruction, No. 1040 .

ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF THE BRIXTON LODGE OF INSTRUCTION , No . 1040 .

Thc Annual Festival of this young and flourishing Lodge of Instruction was held on Tuesday evening , tho 26 th ult ., when a number of brethren assembled at the hospitable board of Bro . Monk , at tho " Prince Regent , " Dulwich-road , Herne-hill , to partake of a bountiful

repast prepared in his usual masterly manner . P > ro E . A . Francis , 1658 , Preceptor , occupied the chair , and the S . VV . and J . VV . chairs were ably filled by Bros . C . J . Axford , S . W . 204 S , and Knight , S . VV . 1507 , respectively . There were also present—VV . Bros . C . H . Phillips , I . P . M . 198 ( 5 , Treasurer ; S . Richardson , W . M . 183 ; J . Harling , P . M . 30 ; H . M . Williams

, W . M . 19 S 6 ; Watts , P . M . 507 ; also Bros . Buckley , S . D . 1320 ; Albert , I . G . 1949 ; Hill , J . W . 156 3 j Andrews , 1986 j Burridge , 1922 j Mayer , J . D . 191 ) 3 ; Dobson , 1694 ; Hooper , S . D . 1986 j Langley , 198-6 , Secretary ; Bird , 1762 j and G . Monk , 1507 . The tables having been cleared , the worth y PRESIDENT commenced his toast list with the usual toast of

" The Queen and Craft , " remarking how loyally this toast was received at every meeting of Freemasons . This having been enthusiasticall y drank , the next toast proposed was that of " The M . W . G . M ., and Pro . G . M ., the Deputy G . M ., and Grand Lodge Officers Present and Past , " which was dul y honoured . Bro . C . H . PHILLIPS , I . P . M . 1986 , Treasurer , then

assumed the gavel , and proposed " Tho Health of Bro . E . A . Francis , Preceptor of the Brixton Lodge of Instruction , " to whom he said the prosperity of this lodge was entirely due—Bro . Francis always being ready and willing to assist any brother in gaining that Masonic knowledge so essentially necessary in every candidate for the Master ' s chair . He therefore asked them to

drink with bumpers tho health of the worthy President . The reception of this toast proved that it was undoubtedly the toast of the evening , and Bro . FRANCIS , in thanking the brethren for the cordial manner in which it had been proposed and received , said that tho only reward he desired in return for trouble taken , was that the Lodge of Instruction should flourish , and this

reward he had received beyond his expectation . The next toast he had to propose was " Increased Prosperity to the Brixton Lodge of Instruction , " coupled with the names of Bros . Phillips and Langley , Treasurer and Secretary . In the course of his remarks he stated that during the four years this Lodgeof Instruction had been in existence , not only had they paid for such furniture

as would not disgrace a regular lodge , but they had a balance in hand of nearly . £ 10 . Without a good Treasurer and Secretary the success of the lodge could not be promoted , he therefore had great pleasure in coupling the names of these officers with this toast , not only for the manner in which they conducted their respective duties , but also because in Craft Masonry he

did not think you could find better workers . He also impressed the brethren to be frequent in their attendance , that boing the only means to gain a knowledge of Masonic working . Bro . PHILLIPS ( Treasurer ) , in reply , said that from the foundation of this Lodge of Instruction to the present time he had taken the liveliest interest in its

proceedings , not only on account of the Masonic knowledge which he had been able to gain under the kindly tuition of their Preceptor , but because in the weekly meetings the principles of brotherly love were so thoroughly maintained . He could assure them that on any occasion when his services could be of any benefit to the lodge or its members they should always be available .

Dro . LANGLEY ( Secretary ) , in thanking the brethren for the cordial reception which this toast had received at their hands , stated that since his initiation , about two years since , he had been absent but four times from their weekly meetings . The duties of Secretary were undertaken by him as a small means of repayment to their Preceptor for the Masonic knowledge which he

had obtained at his hands , and if those duties had been conducted in such a manner as lo merit a . small meed of approbation from the members , he could assure them that he felt amply repaid for the slight labour on his part . The PRESIDENT , in happy terms , then proposed " The Health of the Visitors , " coupled with tho name of Bro . Dobson .

Bro . DODSON , in reply , stated that as a young member of the Craft , he could have wished that this response had been placed in abler hands j however , he thanked the brethren for the honour done him , and said that although his residence was about 10 miles distant , he hoped on some future occasion to meet them in their

lodge and become . 1 member thereof—being anxious to obtain that Masonic knowledge which appeared to be so available under the guidance of their Preceptor . The PRESIDENT , in proposing the next toast , that of " Our Charitable Institutions , " said that as Charity was the watchword of our Order , so ought every Mason to do that which ha was able in support of our Masonic
