almost a personal one , and one which he was certain they would all receive with pleasure . He was sure that the present officers of thc lodge were actuatedby the desire to assist him in every way possible to keep its working and its traditions fully up to the mark . What Master would not be proud of such ollicers ; he had even a Prince for I . G ., and called upon the S . W . and J . VV . to respond .

Bro . Dan . Hughes , S . VV ., replied that in the name of the officers he could assure the VV . M . that their utmost endeavours would be exerted to ensure him a most successful year of ^ office , to make its working as perfect as possible , and to add in every way to the comfort of thc brethren . Bro . Stevens , J . VV ., endorsed all his Bro . S . W . had

said and he could promise that nothing on their part should be wanting in any way to make it a success . He thought he should have heard the W . M . say something about the lodge ball , which came off on Wednesday , February 3 rd , and was rather sorry he had not done so , as several of the brethren had left , probably some might like to have gone .

The lodge having been opened in due form , the minutes of the last regular meeting and of a lodge of emergency

were read and confirmed . The report of the Audit Committee was read , showing a substantial balance to the credit of the lodge . The Auditors drew attention to the increased labours of the Secretary irc consequence of the strength to which the lodge has attained , and , after highly commending the way in which the books and accounts were kept , recommended that some recognition should be made of his services in that capacity during the last ten years . This

report was unanimously adopted , and a notice of motion on this subject was given by Bro . Beasley for consideration at the next meeting . Bro . Arthur Ferrar , S . VV ., VV . M . elect , was then duly presented for installation , and thc ceremony ably rendered by Bro . J . L . Payne , the outgoing W . M . The newlyinstalled W . M . then appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . R . Polak , S . VV . ; G . Ferrar , J . W . ; VV . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas . ; VV . H . Lee , P . M .. Sec . ; A . R .

Olley , S . D . ; VV . Beasley , J . D . ; J . H . Rich , I . G . j VV . VVright , D . C . j E . Frisby , Org . j VV . Simpson and J . Robinson , Stwds . j and J . Marsh , Tyler . The usual addresses were then delivered in a faultless manner , which elicited the warmest approval of the brethren present . Ballot having been taken in favour of Mr . H . J . Allardyce , a candidate for initiation , he was regularly initiated in an

able and impressive manner by the VV . M ., who concluded the ceremony with the ancient charge . A resolution by Bro . VV . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas ., to invest the balance standing to the credit of the Benevolent Fund , was unanimously adopted . Two candidates having been proposed for initiation at thc next meeting , the lodge was closed in due form , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent

banquet , served under the personal supervision of Bro . Clemow . After the cloth had been removed , the usual , loyal and Masonic toasts were duly honoured . "The Queen and the Craft , " and "H . R . H . the Prince of VVales , M . W . G . M ., " were both received in the usual enthusiastic manner . In proposing "The Grand Officers , Present and Past , "

Bro . A . Ferrar , W . M ., expressed his regret that there was not a Grand Officer present , as Bro . Cottebrune , P . G . P ., had been obliged to leave to fulfil another engagement . However , he had no doubt that the toast would be warmly received , for the Grand Officers were deservedly popular in the Craft . " The Health of the VV . AI . " was then proposed by the I . P . M ., Bro . J , L . Payne , who remarked that all the

brethren were pleased to see Bro . Ferrar occupying the chair . They had all seen the very creditable and impressive manner in which he had performed the ceremony of initiation that evening , and which left nothing to be desired . He had no doubt but that Bro . Ferrar would perform the other ceremonies equally as well , and would , in fact , be one of the ablest Masters that had filled the chair of the

lodge . Bro . Arthur Ferrar , VV . M ., heartily thanked Bro . Payne for the compliment he had paid him , and the brethren for the very cordial manner in which they had received the toast . It would give him great pleasure to work the three Degrees , whenever the brethren afforded him the opportunity , and he hoped to havc as successful a year as Bro .

Payne . The next toast he had to introduce lo their notice was an important one , and one which , he was glad to say , was scarcely ever absent from their list of toasts . It was that of "The Initiate . " Hc sincerely hoped that Bro . Allardyce , who had been initiated that evening , would some day occupy the chair of the Iodge . He had no doubt that he would prove a credit to the Craft and to the Duke of Connaught Lodge .

Bro . Allardyce sincerely thanked the lodge for the unanimiiy and kindness with which he had been received , and expressed his intention of using his best endeavours to deserve thc kind remarks of the VV . Master . "The Visitors" was then proposed by thc VV . M ., who said that it was one of the most important toasts of the evening , and he was certain that the members of the Iodge would receive it , as they always did , with sincere and hearty enthusiasm . He was exceedingly pleased to see so

many visitors , to whom he offered a warm welcome , and trusted they had spent a profitable and pleasant evening . He was especially pleased to see Bro . White , from the United States , and he sincerely trusted he would carry back to that country a favourable impression of his reception by English Freemasons . Bro . White , Mass ., U . S . A ., in responding , expressed

his pride at hearing the United States mentioned , for no mother could be prouder of her son or daughter than England is of her daughter America . Freemasonry is universal , and so is the hospitality of Freemasonry , which was fully exemplified in the way in which the lodge had entertained the visitors that evening . Bro . Raikes , P . P . G . Chap . Dorset , in replying to this

toast , said that in all the lodges he had visited he had never seen thc work surpassed . Bro . J . Hoit , VV . M . S 56 , also responded , and , after commending the excellent working of the lodge , cordially thanked the Iodge for the munificent hospitality with which the visitors had been received . The Worshipful Master then proposed " The Health of

the Past Masters , " and expressed his pleasure at seeing such a good array , there being only one absentee , viz ., Bro . Chapman , whom the brethren would be grieved to hear was seriously indisposed . The P . M . ' s of that lodge were always ready to arsist the W . M . with their advice whenever it was required , and they had one and all helped considerably to place the lodge in the distinguished

position it now held . He had now a very pleasing duty to perform , and that was to present Bro . J . L . Payne , the I . P . M ., with the jewel that had been voted by the lodge . Bro . Payne had , during his year of office , performed the duties ol the chair in an able and efficient manner , that reflected the highest credit on his zeal and assiduity . He ( the W . M . ) considered it an honour to have the privilege

of presenting the jewel to so worthy a Mason , and he trusted that the time might be far distant ere Bro . Payne would be parted from the lodge . Bro . J . L . Payne , I . P . M ., heartil y thanked the lodge for the handsome jewel presented to him , and the VV . M . for the kind remarks he had been pleased to use . He sincerely hoped that his successor would have as successlul a year as

he had had . It was one of the proudest moments of his life , and hc hoped that the members of the Iodge—whom he was sure were all good Masons—would work up until they reached the proud position of VV . M . He had been most cordially supported during his term of office by the brethren , and he assured them that he should always wear the jewel to remind him of one of the happiest years he

had ever spent . Bros . Smyth and Brasted also returned thanks on behalf of the P . M . ' s , and congratulated the W . M . on attaining the chair , and wished him a successful year of office . "The Treas . and Sec . " was then given by the W . M ., who eulogised the efficient manner in which Bro . Brand performed the duties of Treas ., and said that the careful way in which he watched over the lodge funds was proved

by the admirable proposition he had brought forward that evening respecting the investing of the balance standing to the credit of the Benevolent Fund . With respect to their Secretary , he was certain that no lodge in London could have a better one than Bro . Lee . Bro . W . H . Brand , P . M ., Treas ., thanked the brethren for the kind manner in which the toast had been proposed

and received . It was very gratifying to him to be able to show such a substantial balance brought forward on the lodge account . He was also pleased to see the balance in favour of the Benevolent Fund steadily increasing . He assured them that he would , in conjunction with the W . M . and P . M . ' s , do his best to manage the financial affairs of the lodge in a manner that would prepare them for a

rainy day . Bro . VV . H . Lee , P . M ., Sec , also responded , and thanked the brethren for their cordial reception of the toast . He was the first Master , and therefore father of thc lodge , and they would pardon him if he felt exceptional gratification at its continued prosperity . The true prosperous

condition of a lodge was not to be gauged by its financial position , but by the feelings of unanimity and brotherly love , which he was glad to say was so ptevalent in the Duke of Connaught Lodge . He hoped he would be spared for many years to see that feeling continually increasing , for its help would enable them to support the Masonic Charities and assist the widows and children who might be

in want . Bro . R . Polak , S . W ., responded for "The Officers , " and assured the W . M . that he could rely on the officers giving him all the assistance in their power during his tenure of office . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a conclusion one of thc most successful and enjoyable meetings this lodge has

held . The musical arrangements added greatly to the success of the evening . Bro . Frisby , Org ., ably presided at the pianoforte , and was assisted by Bros . Dunn , Hoit , VVright , and Lee , jun ., while Bros . Oakley and East rendered some effective recitations .

M . then appointed and invested his officers as follows : Bros . R . Polak , S . VV .
