and of the Benevolent Fund were received , both being of a satisfactory character . The installation of the W . M . elect was then proceeded with , Bro . L . Norden bcinsf presented to Bro . Bassington by Bro . A . M . Crhcn , I . P . M ., who acted as D . C . throughout the ceremonies , which , as rendered by Bro . Bassington , formed a fitting finish to his year of office . Bro . Norden hiving received the salutations of the brethren
in due form , invested his officers as follows : Bros . H . J . Phillips , S . W . ; J . Da Silva , J . C . F . Hogard , P . M ., Secretary ( re-appointed ) ; A . Abrahams , S . D . ; A . Abrahams , J . D . ; J . A . Gartley , I . G . ; J . P . Cohen , P . M ., M . C . ; H . Shanly , Steward ; E . J . Ward , Asst . Steward ; J . Rawles , Tyler ( re-appointed ) . Bro . I . P . M ' . was then presented with a Past Master ' s jewel , for which he briefly
returned thanks . The Secretary read a letter from Bro . P . M . Cooke , Treasurer , explaining the unavoidable absence of that brother through serious illness , but accepting the office ol Treasurer again . Bro . A . M . Cohen , P . M ., called attention to thc famine now raging in Ireland , and moved that £$ 5 s . be contributed from the lodge funds towards the Lord Mayor ' s list in aid of the sufferers . This , seconded
by Bro . Hogard , was carried with unanimity . Several matters of interest to the lodge being disposed of , the lodge was closed , and thc brethren repaired to the banquet room where an excellent banquet was prepared , reflecting much credit upon Bro . Rand , manager , and Bro . A . Cohen , who catered for the t . ibles . Grace having been said both for the Hebrew and English brethren , full justice
was done to the good cheer . In introducing thc usual loyal and Craft toasts , Bro . Norden was brief , but ixpressive , in his remarks , thereby enabling full justice to be done to the toast list without the necessity of curtailment . The list presented a very agreeable feature , each toast being accompanied by an upt quotation fiom the poems of Burns , Tennyson , Lord Byron , Longfellow , and others , that coupled with the " Immediate Past Master , "
" Not Heaven itself upon the past has power ; But what has been , has been , and I have had my hour , " from Dryden , in imitation of Horace , leing a fair specimen . The " R . W . Deputy Grand Master , and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " received as hearty a reception as its predecessors , and was coupled with the name of W . Bro . J . L . Thomas , P . G . Dir . r . f Cer ., who in
response said he would fall in with the goad example set by the W . M . and rise at once to thank them in the names of the Grand Officers , present and past . It afforded him great pleasure to meet his old friend Bro . Hogard , and to be a guest of this old and highly esteemed lodge . In our gatherings at Grand Lodge we hear a great deal of the doings of certain lodges , and the Lodge
of Israel is one of which we hear a high account . As thc brethren so fully appreciated their Grand Officers , he felt sure they did their duty and justified their appointment . He thanked them for thc cordial reception of the toast . Bro . Bassington , I . P . M ., next gave "The W . M . " in appreciative terms . He was sure all would agree with him that they had the right man in the right place ,
and he was sure , from the manner in which Bro . Norden had conducted the several offices he had held in the lodge , the brethren would have every satisfaction from his year of office . In reply , Bro . Norden thanked the I . P . M . for the kind introduction of the toast , and the brethren fur the manner they had received it . He was now upon his trial , and hoped he would receive the same encomiums upon
leaving that position as he had in entering it . ( Cheers . ) " The Masonic Charities and the Lidge Benevolent Fund " were next given . The W . M . said he had expected Bro . Terry would have been present , but , owing to the death of his father , he was unavoidably absent . They all knew the extent of the Masonic Institutions , hut they had one institution near and dear to them—viz . their Lodge
Benevolent Fund . He would call upon that brother who , in the past as well as at the present time , so ably presided over it . ( Chcers . ) _ He trusted it might soon attain the four figure proportions its President , Bro . A . M . Cohen , was so desirous of witnessing . Bro . Cohen said he wished the Bro . Cohen of the past days could respond for Bro . Cohen of the present . To do full' justice to the toast he should
require the eloquence of a Cicero ; but would do his best . Bro . Cohen gave an interesting account of the Lodge Benevolent Fund , to which , as its object was the relief of lodge members only , they alone were asked to contribute towards it . He hoped that the brethren would that evening enable them to purchase another £ 100 of stock . Bro . Secretary was zealously waiting with a double-pointed pencil , and he
trusted the brethren would respond . To the credit of thc Israel brethren we can say Bro . Secretary had a very busy time of it , and with a satisfactory result . " The I . P . M . " and "The Visitors" were in turn toasted , receiving a hearty reception . The W . M . had much pleasure in giving the toast . They were honoured by the attendance of representatives of the Lodges of Tranquillity , Joppa ,
Montefiore , Samson , and Athelstan . With each of these five lodges there exists a bond of union and sympathy with the Israel Lodge . He would ask Bro . Hymans , W . M . Joppa , 188 , to respond for those lodges , and also couple with the toast the name of Bro . Nicholson , P . M . Athelstan , it ) , and Bro . Webb , I . P . M . 1607 . To Bro .
Webb especially thc W . M . was indebted for the proud position he then filled ; he having had his instruction from Bro . Webb . Bro . Hymans thanked the brethren on behalf of the sister lodges , and Bros . Nicholson and Webb also responded . The W . M . then rose to say he would further connect the names of Bro . Musto , P . M ., and Bro . Stephens with the toast , they being respectively the Preceptor and

Secretary of the lodge ot instruction held under the war . rant of tbe Israel Lodge . This was received with enthu .. siasm , as many of the brethren and the newl y-appointed officers are gaining their Masonic knowledge at this lod gc which Bro . Norden c ' aimed to be one of thc best to be found . Bro . Musto , P . M ., suitably responded , and "The Past Master- , " were toasted . Bro . A . M . Cohen said it
would rcquiie but few words from him to express thc thanks of thc Past Masters . For himself , for a great number of years , he could say there was no capacit y in thc lorlge which the Past Masters had not filler ] and were capable of filling , whenever called upon ! " The Officers" was next given . Of Bro . S . \ V \ the W . M . said it was only through his diffidence that
he was not in the position of W . M . ; Bro . J . W . they svould find a first-rate worker ; Bro . Treasurer , he was sorry to say , was through ill-health unable to be present ; how well and faithfully he had always donejhis duty his re-election would testify . He trusted T . G . A . O . T . U . would in his mercy and goodness be pleased to restore him speedily to health . Our Brc . Secretary is ^ known so
well to you all , the W . M . was sure if the brethren were to search all thc world they would not find his better . Through his influence , with the W . M ., he had brought thc lodge out of debt , and with a balance on the right side . He asked them to drink to " The Officers of the Lodge . " Bro . S . W ., in reply , said he would simply thank them for the hearty reception of the toast , and assure
them of his constant endeavour to give them satisfaction . Bro . J . W . expressed himself almost overcome in the presence of such a distinguished assembly of Grand Lodge Officers , representing as they did the elite of the Masonic world—surrounded as he was by distinguished members of the Craft—at having to respond as an officer of the lodge . The cordial manner in which their healths had
been drunk was not only a reward for past labours , but would piove an incentive to work for thc lod ge , and so attain the proud position he saw so many brethren had attained . Bro . Secretary alluded to the lamented absence of Bn > . Coote , Treasurer . He was sure if good wishes and heartfelt prayers could have restored that brother he would have been among them . However , although upon
a bed of sickness , he had a first-rate doctor , a brother Mason , Bro . Trollope , and , Bro . Hogard believed , a Provincial Grand Officer . We hope he will soon be restored to that health he had hitherto enjoyed . Bro . I . P . Cohen , P . M , M . C , humorously returned thanks , and the Tyler's toast was the signal for dispersal , after spending a happy evening . Among thc items contributing to that end may
he mentioned the excellent pianoforte playing of Bro . Davies , 1017 ; a capital rendering of a reading by Bro , . 1 . H . Clynds ( St . Michael ' s Lodge ) ; a ballad b y Bro , Stephens , & c . The visitors present were Bros . J . L . Thomas , 142 , P . G . D . C . ; C . A . Cottebrune , 7 ^ 3 , 959 , P . G . P . ; E . P . Albert , 188 , 1017 , P . G . P . ; Watson , 9 ; Maidwell , P . Walter Dalton , of the Talbot Lodge , No . 1323 , Swansea , was also unanimously elected a joining member . The brethren then proceeded to the election of W . M . for the ensuing year , when their choice was found
to have fallen , as usual , on the S . W ., Bro . F . C . Taylor . Bro . Poynter , P . M ., was unanimously re-elected Treasurer , and Bro . Grant , Tyler . A sum of ten guineas was voted from the lodge funds to be placed upon the list of Bro . Poynter , P . M . and Treas ., on the occasion of his proposed service of the office of Steward at the ensuing festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution , and several
other contributions were made to that list by those present . The brethren then voted a Past Master's collar and badge to Bro . Byng , I . P . M ., as a slight recognition of his valuable services in having filled the chair and performed the duties of the W . M . in his unavoidable absence during the greater part of his year of office just upon the point of expiration . The lodge having been closed according to
ancient custom , the brethren proceeded to refreshment , where they were presided over by Bro . Byng , I . P . M ., with his usual urbanity . After the indispensable loyal toasts , " The Health of the Visitors " was cordially drunk and responded to , Bro . Windybank , who had been proposed in open lodge as a joining member , taking occasion in his remarks to refer with pleasure to his contemplated return

Stephens with the toast , they being respectively the Preceptor and
Reports Of Masonic Meetings.
