trusted would be augmented if possible rather than diminished under his sway . " The Health of the Treasurer " was very warmly received by the brethren , and responded to by that officer , Bro . Poynter , P . M ., •ho took occasion to express ' his sorrow at thc regrettable absence of the W . M . during his year of office , tne inconvenience
at the same time pointing out that nan been materially diminished in the Burgoyne Lodge by their possession of several capable P . M . ' s able and willing at a moment ' s notice to supply the place of president , and none more competent than the brother they saw in the chair that night . In the old ballad of "Chevy Chase " it was narrated that when thc Scottish king was informed of the death of his brave knight , Douglas , he
lamented that " search all Scotland through there was never another like he . " How did the English king receive similar tidings ? When the first emotion of his grief at the loss of the brave Percy , in the same battle , had subsided , he reflected with gratitude that in broad England lie had left him yet " five hundred as good as he . " A
similar sense was entertained in the Burgoyne Lodge of the value to it of its proved and tried P . M . ' s . In this lodge , as in Shakespeare ' s England , •' not Amurath an Amurath succeeds , but Harry , succeeds Harry . " Most of their Past Masters had shown the stuff they were made of before they came to the chair ; many of them , by serving the office of Secretary , had obtained a firm grip of the
business details of the dry financial administration of the association , and so in the best possible school had qualified themselves for those duties of the chair which , though less conspicuous than other labours , contributed , perhaps , an even larger share—if not to the fame and eminence of the lodge , at least—to its permanent prosperity and the happiness of its members . "The Officers' Healths" having
been duly given and acknowledged , the Tyler ' s toast brought a most agreeable evening to a rather late conclusion . Perhaps , however , the fact that tbe se ' ance was somewhat protracted may be attributable to some admirable singing by the members of the lodge , some marvellous and charming instrumental displays by Bro . Roe , a
new member , and two excellent recitations , one by Bro . Field , P . M ., of the late Major Whyte Melville ' s poem ( written as a ballad ) , " The clipper that stands in the stall at the top , " and the other by Bro . Wooidridge , a visitor , of a London scene from the Dagonet ballads ( " Sal Grogan " ) , a masterpiece of powerful declamation .
DUKE OF CONN AUGHT LODGE ( No . 1524 ) . —The first meeting of this flourishing lodge at its new quarters , the Moorgate-street Restaurant , was held on Thursday week , the 29 th ult ., upon which occasion a goodly company of brethren were present , it being the installation night , and more than ordinary interest was felt in the ceremony , as the W . M . elect , Bro . Brand , was the first initiate
of the lodge . The lodge was opened at five o ' clock by the W . M ., Bro . Neville Green , assisted bv Bros . Wm . Henry Brand , S . W ., W . M . elect ; Fred . Brastcd , J . W . ; Thos . C . Chapman , P . M ., Treas . ; W . H . Lee , P . M ., Sec . ; E . Dignam , S . D . ; Charles Lorkin , J . D . ; Arthur Ferrar , D . of C . ; J . J . Marsh , Tyler ; H . G . Moon , George Ferrar , W . The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed , and the report of the Audit
Committee received , ballot was taken for the following candidates , Messrs . James Thomas Latter , Donald Munro , James William White , and Edwin Woodman , which proved unanimous in their favour . These gentlemen having been properly prepared , were admitted , and impressively initiated into thc mysteries and privileges of ancient Freemasonry , the ceremony being
ably performed by Bro . Neville Green , W . M . Lodge was then opened in the Second Degree , and the W . M . elect ( Bro . Brand ) was presented to the Worshipful Master , Bro . Neville Green , for the benefit of installation . After the usual charges had been read by the Secretary , the lodge was opened in the Third Degree , when all the brethren below the rank of Installed Master withdrew . A Board of
Installed Masters having been formed , Bro . Wm . Henry Brand was impressively installed into the chair of King Solomon by Bro . Green , who was ably assisted by Bro . W . H . Lee , P . M . On the re-admission of the brethren , thc working tools of the several Degrees were presented , and the newly-installed Master was saluted in ancient form . Bro . Brand then appointed and invested the following brethren as his officers for thc ensuing year : —Bros .
F . Brasted , S . W . ; E . Dignam , J . W . ; C . W . Smyth , Treas . ; W . H . Lee , P . M ., Sec ; J . Lorkin , S . D . ; J . L . Payne , J . D . ; A . Ferrar , I . G . ; H . Polak , D . C . ; S . Hill and R . George , Stewards ; H . G . Moon , Org . ; and J . Marsh , Tyler . The Secretary having brought before the lodge the fact that the bye-laws were out of print , it was unanimously resolved that they be reprinted , and that Bros . cers , should act as a revision committee . The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet table , where , under the presidency of thc W . M ., they partook of an admirable dinner , well served , under the personal superintendence of Bro . A . Kent . At thc conclusion of the banquet thc customary toasts were drunk . " The Queen and the Craft , " " H . R . H . the Prhceof Wales . M . W .
G . M . "" The Rt . Hon . the Earl of Carnarvon , ProG . M ., Lnrd Skelmersdale , Dep . G . M ., and the rest of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " having all been duly honoured , Bro . Neville Green , I . P . M ., rose and said that it afforded him unusual pleasure to propose " The Health of the W . M ., " and he felt sure that the general feeling of the lodge was one of delight to sec Bro . Brand
holding the position . Bro . Brand was the first initiate of the lodge , and he ( Bro . Green ) could assure him that personally he felt great pleasure in that fact , and he was convinced that all the brethren would cordially join him in an expression of congratulation , and hope that his year of effice would be one of pleasure to himself and success to the lodge . ( Hear , hear . ) The toast
having been enthusiastically drunk , the W . M . thanked the lodge for having elevated him to his high position , and remarked that while he filled the chair nothing would be wanting on his part to deserve the marks of good wishes and friendship which the brethren had evinced by the cordiality of their response to the toast of his health . Brethren were sometimes apt to look upon his position
before they occupied it as something very light and easy to fill ; but he could assure them the little he had seen of it during the shoit time that he had filled it convinced him that it was a very onerous one . The W . M . was for the time being trustee of the honour and welfare of the lodge , which he was bound to study above everything else , and in this respect he would endeavour to prove himself worthy
of having been elected to the office . There was one thing that he had in his favour , and that was their removal from their old quarters to a better place of meeting . In conclusion he would ask them to drink to " The Health of the I . P . M ., " a toast which he was sure would fully meet their approval and support . Bro . Green had brought them through his year of office with great success , and
had acquitted himself in a most creditable manner . He ( the W . M . ) could only carry out the wishes of the lodge further with regard to the I . P . M . by presenting him with a Past Master ' s jewel , which thc brethren felt he so richly deserved . ( Cheers . ) Bro . Green appropriately acknowledged the toast and the presentation , observing that during his year of office he had not had a great amount of
work to do ; but what he had to do he had endeavoured to perform to the best of his ability , and he could not let this opportunity slip without acknowledging the hearty support and co-operation which tbe other officers had rendered him . He thought the removal of thc lodge from its old quarters marked a new epoch in the history of the Duke of Connaught Lodge . He thought so from the fact
that they had had six initiates since they had changed their quarters . With regard to the jewel which they had presented him with he felt he had been rewarded above his deserts , but he would wear it with the greatest pride during thc many years in which he yet hoped to take an active part in the affairs of the Duke of Connaught Lodge . " The Initiates" having been proposed , and acknowledged by them In a few graceful sentences , the W . M . next
proposed " The Visitors , " which was responded to by Bro . Cottebrune , P . G . P ., and several others . The remaining toasts , "The Past Masters , " "The Treasurer and Secretary , " " The Officers , " and the Tyler ' s toast , were then speedily gone through , and the brethren separated , having spent a most enjoyable evening . Between the toasts Bros . Lee , Warrington , Cross , Rogers , and Brasted contributed to the entertainment of the brethren by singing some excellent songs .
