NEWPORT PAGNELL . SS . Peter and Paul Lodge ( No . 1410 ) . ^ On I uesday evening , the 19 th tilt ., at the Masonic Mall , the brethren of thc lod ge assembled in full force , as well as a large body of brethren from other lodges in the district , for the purpose of taking part in the installation of Bro . J . C . Hipwell as VV . Master of the lodge for the ensuing year .
Amongst the visiting brethren present were the following : Bros . R . Bradley , P . G . S . B ., Prov . G . Sec ; S . Kilpin , P . M ., and R . H . Coombs , P . G . P ., of 540 ; S . J . Attenborough , J . D . 34 ; R . King , P . M ., and E . Revill , P . M ., of S 40 ; VV . H . Pike , VV . M ., and F . D . Bull , P . M ., of 1 G 39 ; J . Slinn , LP . M ., C J . Whitlock , J . The ceremony of initiation was excellently performed by Bro . T . Taylor , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., after which the newlyinstalled VV . M . invested his officers as follows : Bros , the Rev . C . M . Ottley , I . P . M . ; VV . Merrikin , S . VV . ; J . C Coales , J . VV . ; thc Rev . H . J . Hatch , Chap . ; E . Carr , Treas . ; T . Taylor , Sec . ; J . E . Whiting , S . D . ; C . H . vvas drunk most loyally and musically acknowledged , as vvas also that of " The M . W . Grand Master , H . R . H . thc Prince of Wales . " This was followed by that of "The Pro G . M ., the Earl of Carnarvon ; the Dep . G . M ., the Earl of Lathom ; and the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " which vvas coupled with the name of Bro . Bradley , who thanked the brethren
for so kindly connecting his name with the toast , and for the way in which it had been received . He felt it a very great honour indeed to have his name associated with the toast , an honour not only to himself , but also to the province with which he vvas connected . They vvere proud of their Grand Master , and especially of the great advance Masonry hatl made since he had held that very important position ; and
the most watchful care was exercised by G . Lodge over all matters connected with Masonry . With respect to the Province of Berks and Bucks , the members had lately suffered a serious loss in the death of the Provincial Grand Master , Sir Daniel Gooch , who vvas a most able and distinguished Mason . Although hc had not visited the lodges very much , he had always taken the greatest interest in the affairs of
the province , and nothing took place that did not come under his cognizance . In days gone by he vvas a most accomplished Mason , but was more particularly distinguished as an Installing Master . There was one matter upon which they would probably expect him ( Bro . Bradley ) to say a word or two , namely , the division of the province . He believed , without exception , the lodges in the province
would be in favour , because it had now grown to such dimensions that it was only right and proper that it should be divided . There vvere now 13 lodges belonging to the County of Berks and 12 to the County of Bucks , both being sufficiently strong to form separate provinces . It vvas with great pleasure indeed that he had been able to visit the SS . Peter and Paul Lodge that day , and to enjoy the
hospitality of its brethren , and watch the excellent working of the lodge , in which there vvas evidently perfect good feeling and unanimity . Those matters not only gave him much pleasure , but he felt in duty bound to congratulate the brethren upon them , and hoped the Master vvould have a successful year of office , and that the lodge vvould have much prosperity .
lhe next toast was " 1 he Prov . Grand Master in charge , Bro . the Rev . J . Studholme Brownrigg , and the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " which was coupled with the name of Bro . Terry , who suitably replied . "The I . P . M . and Past Masters" followed , thc W . M . associating' with the toast the name of Bro . the Rev . C . M . Ottley , to whom also , on behalf of the lodge , he presented a
handsome jewel , in recognition of the W . M . ' s services during' the past year . Bro . Ottley acknowledged with thanks thc great kindness and help which had been shown to him during the past year by Bro . T . Taylor , who had very materially assisted him in the working of the lodge , and also thanked the brethren for their kind consideration . He vvas deeply grateful for the
jewel which had been presented to him , an honour he felt he scarcely deserved . At the same time , he was extremely glad to receive it , because he should value it in memory of his year of office and of thc kindness he had received . He then gave thc toast of "The W . M ., " which vvas heartily received and briefly acknowledged , Bro . Hipwell observing that it would be his desire to emulate as far as possible the
brethren who had so ably filled the office before him . Bro . J . R . Wilmer gave the toast of the Installing Master , Bro . T . Taylor , and spoke of the excellent way in which the installation ceremony had been performed . Bro . Taylor replied . He also acknowledged " The Masonic Charities , " a toast , he said , which he regarded as one of the most important , because it showed the good
which Alasonry was doing' throughout the world . " The Visitors " was replied to by Bros . Slinn , Coombs , Harnett , Whitlock , Revill , Attenborough , King , F . D . Bull , and others . '' The Officers of the Lodge " vvas acknowledged by Bros .
Merrikin and J . C . Coales . The Tyler ' s toast concluded the list . The meeting , which was a most successful one , terminated by the brethren singing " God save thc Oueen . " Bros . Slinn , Hatch , Attenborough , Odell , W . Wilmer , Booth , and Line contributed to the harmony of the evening .
NORTHALLERTON . Anchor Lodge ( No . 1337 ) . —On Thursday , the 21 st ult ., the monthly meeting of thc above lodge was held in the Masonic Hall . " Bro . Thomas Russell , W . AL , presided , and there was a good attendance of the brethren . The first business was to elect a Charity Representative , and Bro . L . Palliser , P . AL , P . P . S G . W ., was unanimously
reelected . Bro . G . J . Robinson , P . AL , Secretary , then rose and moved— " That a hearty vote of condolence be forwarded to the relatives and friends of the late Bro . Richard Huggan Sootheran , P . AL , P . P . G . S . B ., and that a minute recording the unfeigned regret of the members ofthe Anchor Lodge on the death of Bro . Sootheran , P . AL , be entered on the minutes of the lodge . " Hewascertain , hesaid , that hc was
speaking tobrethren who were all of them sorry to loseone who was a Freemason in the fullest sense of the word . Their late brother was initiated a member of the lodge on the 3 rd of November , 1 S 75 , at a lodge of emergency , and those brethren who vvere present well remembered how deeply he was impressed by the ceremony , which was faithfully gone through in accordance with ancient custom by Bro .
Joseph 1 'airburn , ( who was then VV . AI . Always ready to assist , and being'a constant attendant at the lodge meetings , Bro . Sootheran vvas soon promoted to office , and he went through the various offices until he was elected W . AL , and was , on the Sth of January , 1 SS 4 , duly installed into his office by that good old antl much loved Installing Master the late Bro . Anthony Crosby Knowles , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W .
The late Bro . Sootheran ' s year of office vvas a pleasant and happy one , as hc added dignity to the Craft by the genial manner in which he discharged his duties . He had thc honour of being VV . AI . vvhen the foundation-stone of the chancel of All Saint ' s Parish Church was laid with Alasonic ceremonies , and many Past Alasters vvould remember with pride the way in which their late brother on that occasion carried out the onerous duties of Worshipful
Master of the lodge . During his year of office Bro . Sootheran made a most valuable present to the lodge , consisting of a Worshipful Alaster ' s chair , made in grand style , of old oak , with the date 1 G 57 neatly carved upon it . That chair he endowed with a vote for the Alasonic Boys ' School , while his more recent gifts to the lodge consisted of a handsomely framed portrait of himself , given on October 16 th , 1 SS 7 , while he had also given

them a handsome rosewood mallet . To prove his interest in the spread of Freemasonry , he might remind them that their recently deceased brother had qualified as a Life-Governor of the Royal Alasonic Schools . It was , therefore , with unfeigned satisfaction that the members of the lodge saw his promotion to the purple , most hearty being the congratulations from every member of the lodsre on his
being appointed to the office of Provincial Grand Standard Bearer at the meeting of the North and East Riding Provincial Grand Lodge , at Hull , in July last , while at the recent Charity Festival at York , their much lamented brother qualified as a Steward . Therefore , they regretted exceedingly the somewhat sudden demise of their brother at the comparitively early age of 48 . He had now to place
before them the resolution he had moved , and to express , on behalf of the officers and brethren of that lodge , their deep sense of the loss of not only one of their best members , but of a most worthy and regular Freemason . Bro . Joseph Fairburn , P . AL , P . A . G . P ., seconded the resolution , and said that he had enjoyed the Masonic friendship of the late Bro . Sootheran ever since he had the honour of initiatinsr
him into that lodge . Their late lamented brother had been deeply impressed with the vow he took vvhen he vvas made a Freemason , and had always borne in mind the lesson of Charity which was then taught him . There were none who ever appealed to him for relief but who met with a hearty response , but his Charity was given secretly , and very few people were aware of the hand that helped them in their
time of trouble . The late Bro . Sootheran always shrank from having his good deeds published to the world , but ahvays acted on the motto , " Let not thy right hand know what thy left hand doeth . " As a Freemason and a P . M . of their lodge he set an example , both by his attendance and his unity , which they would do well to follow , his aim being to promote brotherly love and live in harmony with all men .
The vote vvas then put to the meeting , and carried unanimously in silence . The lodge was then closed .
SURBITON . St . Margaret ' s Lodge ( No . 1872 ) . —The installation meetingof this lodge vvas held on the 21 st ult ., at the Lecture Hall , Maple-road , vvhen the AV . M ., Bro . C M . Hogg , vvas well supported by his officers , lay members of the lodge , and visitors . The minutes of the previous meeting' having' been read and confirmed , the Auditors'
report vvas submitted to the brethren and adopted . Bro . James Henry Crofts , W . AL elect , vvas then presented by Bro . Gibbes to ^ he Installing Master , and duly installed into the chair . This ceremony was most impressively performed . Thc following officers for the ensuing year were then invested : Bros . Hogg , I . P . M . ; S . M . Cooke , S . W . ; J . Hodgkin , J . VV . ; Reginald Piper , P . AL , P . J . G . W .,
Treas . ; VV . H . D . Pearse , P . AL , P . P . J . G . W ., Sec ; S . H . Hodgkin , S . D . ; D . Chester , P . M . 1 S 0 , J . D . ; Irwin R . Palmer , I . G . ; Dr . Gibbes , P . J . W ., D . C ; and Budden , Tyler . After the investiture of the officers , the Installing Master completed his duties by the delivery of the three addresses , which he did with an eloquence and easiness of address that captivated all who heard him .
All business being ended , the lodge vvas closed , and the brethren made their way by train to Hampton Court , the installation banquet , as has been customary , having been ordered at tr . e Alitre Hotel , where Bro . Sadler vvas in 1 eadincss to receive his visitors from Surbiton . The company numbered just upon 30 , which vvas less than expected , owing to various circumstances duly explained .
Among the guests vvere Bros . John Drewett , P . AL 163 S , W . AI . SSg , P . P . A . G . P . ; AV . Drewett , I . P . M . SSg , W . M . 163 S , P . P . G . S . ; F . T . V . Honeywell , P . h . Vickers , LP . AL , A . J . Crofts , J . D ., and W . G . Beaumont , of 1 G 32 ; A . Hooker , 1670 ; J . W . Addiscombe , 1556 ; and others . The banquet and wines were worthy alike of the hospitality of the lodge and of the well-known house in which the gathering' took place , and it added much to the gratification of the friends of the host to see him in good health , actively superintending the service of the several
courses . The usual toasts were given in commendably short speeches . The I . P . M ., when proposing "The Health of the W . Master , " caused some amusement by remarking that he trusted his successor ( Bro . Crofts ) vvould go out of office " with credit to himself and advantage to the lodge . " This
was regarded as a line specimen of the " bull" Irish , and roars of laughter interrupted the speaker in his following remarks ; but he held to his words , and his meaning vvas apparent vvhen he went on to advise the junior officers to attend regularly the monthly meetings for rehearsal of the work , in order that they might all be as one , and so render the ceremonies in that perfect way in the future which had
marked their past rendering in the lodge . The toast of " The Visitors " enabled three Past Alasters to pay their tribute of adm iration at the very excellent working presented in the lodge that evening , and all expressed pleasure at the hospitable reception given them . The presentation of the jewel voted to the I . P . M . took place at the banquet , and the VV . AI . paid a graceful
compliment to his predecessor upon the deep interest he evinced in the welfare of the lodge , and upon the splendid example he had set them all by his accurate working . The toasts vvere most agreeably varied with vocal music of a high order , contributed by Bros . Beaumont , Vickers , Nichols , Hill , and Honeywell , the last named also acting as accompanist , and it vvas not until n o ' clock that the party broke up , having passed a very enjoyable evening .

D ., and A . E . Billing , of 2244 ; and others .
The ceremony of initiation was excellently performed by Bro . T . Taylor , P . M ., P . P . S . G . W ., after which the newlyinstalled VV . M . invested his officers as follows : Bros , the Rev . C . M . Ottley , I . P . M . ; VV . Merrikin , S . VV . ; J . C Coales , J . VV . ; thc Rev . H . J . Hatch , Chap . ; E . Carr , Treas . ; T . Taylor , Sec . ; J . E . Whiting , S . D . ; C . H . Cannon had prepared a capital banquet , which was fully appreciated . After the menu had been dispo ' sed of the VV . M ., who presided , proposed "The Queen and the Craft , " which

vvas drunk most loyally and musically acknowledged , as vvas also that of " The M .
