The pantomime at the National Theatre , Drury Lane , will this year be on a more gigantic scale than ever . Written by Bros . Augustus Harris and Harry Nicholls , "Jack and the Beanstalk" is certain to please the public . The company engaged include Bros . H . Nicholls , Herbert Campbell , Dan Leno , C .

Misses Harriet Vernon , Maggie Duggan , Agnes Hewitt , Rosie Deering , Sybil Grey , and JEnea ., the flying dancer . The music will be composed by that well-skilled composer , Bro . Slaughter , so vve may expect many catching tunes to the lyrics . The dresses will be executed by Mdme . Auguste Co .,
and the ballets , of course , arranged by Madame Katti Lanner . The Shakespearian procession will be one of the chief features in this year ' s pantomime , and Bro . Harris may be relied upon to make his entertainment full of rollicking fun and humorous conceit . This old nursery legend will be retold ^ n a new form , acceptable to both old and young .
* * * Mr . Duck has again showed his keen manager ' s instinct in reviving "Pink Dominoes" at the Comedy . When played originally at the Criterion more than 15 years ago , it gave rise to much controversy , but since then many other farcical comedies have been seen on
broader lines , and the public have settled down to such plots , which , it must be remembered , are very different when played as farcical comedies than as realistic dramas . It vvas , with " The Two Roses , " the best of the late Mr . Albery ' s works . Of its kind it is undoubtedly a masterpiece . No one could better succeed Mr . Wyndham , whom vve miss , than
Air . C . H . Havvtrey . Mr . Maltby is never repulsive , but is always amusing . Miss Rose Saker , Miss Gabrielle Goldney , and Miss Alma Stanley , with Mr . Aubrey Boucicault and Bro . H . Standing , each act with such vivacity , that " Pink Dominoes " is likely to have as long a run as in years gone by . Mr . Duck has made a safe speculation in reviving this mirth-provoking play .
¦ - . ' * * We were fortunate in not seeing the early productions of "The New Corsican Brothers " at the Royalty , now opened by Bros . A . Harris , Arthur Roberts , and Mr . H . Watkin , as , vve believe , success vvas not stamped on its birth . Whether it will survive its severe criticism
time alone can tell , but everything that that celebrated comedian has touched has turned to gold , and it may be that Bro . Roberts may work up Mr . Cecil Raleig h ' s poor dialogue into a funny piece . If so he can certainly make bricks as well without straw as with that article . Curiously , the last

act is the most clever , while the first is the prettiest . But when Bro . Roberts is off the stage the thing flags . Mr . and Mrs . Deane Brand help materially with the singing , and Miss Edith Kenward is very sprightly , both in acting and dancing , and seems to do a good share of the work to keep the " business " going . Bro . Slaughter ' s music , though not very original , is far in advance of Mr . Raleigh's dialogue .
* * * Miss Louise Litta , who hails from America , announces she will open the Opera Comique next week with a nsvv farcical comedy , written for her by Mr . Chas . Fawcett , entitled " Madcap Midge . " Bro . J . Maclean and Mr . Grahame are engaged to play . We await the raising of the curtain .
Messrs . Moore and Burgess have done much to take away the reproach that vve are not a musical nation . The public owe more to them than they have hitherto owned . Many of the ballads we hear , and have heard , in the drawing room , the concert hall , and at penny readings originated at St . James ' s Hall , where Messrs .
Moore and Burgess have been for more than a quarter of a century . Their artists , though continuall y changing , are still as good as ever . Whilst many other Christy minstrels have come into being , the originals at St . James ' s Hall are still the leaders . After the most enjoyable evening vve spent there recently , we do not mean such a long while to elapse before making another visit .
Bros . Downey , the eminent photographers of Eburystreet , are now publishing in monthly parts three photographs of celebrated men and women , with biographies . Some have appeared in platino form , which look like pen and ink drawings . Of those vve
have seen of the Duke and Duchess of Fife , Sarah Bernhardt , the Archbishop of Canterbury , and Prince George of Wales , all are equally excellent as likenesses and specimens of the photographers' art . If there is room for another such publication , Messrs . Downey ' s ought to be a success .
The author of those pretty little comediettas "The Colour Sergeant , " "Comrades , " and "A Hi ghland Legacy " could hardly have been credited with the disability to write " The Golden Craze , " with which the syndicate of the Princess ' s re-opened that house on Saturday . Beautifully re-decorated , carpeted , and
furnished , only a good play vvas wanting to make every thing in harmony . But Mr . Brandon Thomas has utterly failed . From eight till midnight " The Golden Craze " dragged on its weary length , becoming after a good first act hopelessly worse and worse , until vvhen the curtain dropped only gibes , flouts , and sneers vvere
accorded by a patient audience to the author ' s drama . Perhaps one of the best features of the evening was that Mr . Thomas would not be drawn , nor , in fact , did anyone appear to answer to the cat ' s calls at the close of the piece . " Author , author , " vvas shouted , but noauthor came forward . Had he shown his wisdom all through his
work the result might have been different . Even with certain scenes cut out bodily , and many long speeches of moralising excised , and the five acts considerably revised , vve can scarcely hold out any hopes for the " Golden Craze . " \ Ve believe the audience went there hoping and in the humour to see a good play ,
for they listened with much patience and interest to the first act—out of which they might have expected a fairly good drama to be evolved—but every one went away sadly disappointed . The subject , which was a good one to found a drama upon , vvas the present excitement in gold mines in South Africa , and the
floating of swindling limited companies to fleece the Britisher of his well earned savings by adventurous Barons , together with some very true and pertinent remarks regarding the importation of German labour , and the stupidity of making boys gentlemen by becoming clerks on . £ 40 a year , instead of setting them to a trade . A most capable
company , including Miss Amy Roselle , Miss Fanny Brough , Mr . J . H . Barnes , Mr . Robert Pateman , Mr . W . Herbert and Mr . Sant Matthews , had been engaged and did their best to struggle with their parts , but chaos only resulted . The syndicate have an excellent all-round company , and a newly-appointed house ; all they want—which is a most important all—is a good strong play .
