A matter of this kind is easily arranged , and it adds so greatly to the success of a ATasonic gathering , as it varies the dreary monotony of speeches , good , bad , and indifferent , that are apt to leave in the morning but a dreary reflection of the previous evening ' s entertainment .

AL gave the usual loyal and Alasonic toasts . The I . P . M ., Bro . Aliller , then proposed the toast of "The W . M ., " and in so doing congratulated the brethren upon

having such an excellent A'lason at their head , the W . AL on the manner in which he had carried out the ritual , and also upon the vast assembly of Masons present that night , and trusted that every meeting would be as well attended , and that he mi g ht have plenty of work . The W . AL , in response , thanked the brethren for their very flattering reception of the toast . The I . P . AI . had

, however , spoken too flatteringly of him , because he had not done the work so well as he should have liked to have done . It vvas , however , his first effort , and only those who had had to do such work before a crowded lod"'e could understand how hard it vvas to do it to their own liking . He intended to . do the work well , and they might depend upon it it vvould be done to their satisfaction and his own

before the expiration of his year of office . Bros . Grice , Jolly , Gould , and Summers having responded for "The Visitors , " Bro . Aliller , in responding for "The Past Masters , " assured the W . M . that he should give him every assistance he could , and vvas sure every officer and brother in the lodge would do likewise . He strenuously enforced the claims

of the Iodge of instruction upon the brethren , as it not only prepared them for office in their own lodge , but taught them to enter a strange lodge in a proper and A'lason like ° manner . Bro . Warren said he was the oldest P . AL present , and , as Bro . Miller had said , was ahvays ready to support the VV . AI ., or give instruction to the brethren . He vvas pleased with the great unanimity that existed in the lodge , and in conclusion begged of them to be particularl y careful of

whom they proposed as initiates , as not only the honour and reputation , but the very existence of a lodge at times vvas endangered by bad initiates . "The Initiate , " "The Officers , " and Tyler ' s toast followed . The musical portions of the ceremonies , as well as at the social board , were splendidly arranged . A quartette of instrumentalists , under the direction of Bro . Bidgood , played selections admirably , while the vocal portion of the proceedings were handsomely carried out .

The lodge was then closed , and the brethren banqueted in the dining saloon attached to the hall . The usual loyal and Grand Mark Lodge toasts having been duly honoured , that of " Bro . Robinson , the G . M . of the Province of Kent , " vvas drunk with enthusiasm , and

Bro . Robinson , in the course of a lengthy and eloquent reply , and which he characterised as a lecture , thanked the brethren for the opportunity afforded him of being present , especially as he did not now often visit the lodges in that portion of the province . The reason for not visiting them so often vvas because of the excellent service rendered him by the Deputy Prov . Grand Master , Bro . Cummings , who

resided in the neighbourhood , and next , because he , Bro . Robinson , vvas older , and getting older , and could not spare himself so much as formerly . Nor did hc know so much of the Woolwich and London lodges as he should like to , for the same reasons as he did many of the other lodges in the province . It vvas now six years since he had been with them , and then they were a small lodge , nor did he expect

theirs would ever be a very large one . Hc then gave a most interesting account of thc origin and progress of the Order , and of those who had supported it since its first inauguration as a Prov . G . Lodge in 1 S 55 ; and concluded by thanking them for their attention , and also for their hospitality . Hc complimented Bro . Wood upon his excellent work as Installing Officer , and vvas sorry not to have been

present at the advancement of the candidate . He hoped they might go on and prosper , and if they never had a large number of brethren members of the lodge , yet felt sure that those they did have would bc a credit both to the lodge and the degree generally . The I . P . M . then proposed the toast of "The Worshipful Alaster . " He said he did so with the greatest pleasure ,

because Bro . Russell had succeeded him both in the Craft and Alark , and he had always found him a most perfect and efficient officer and worker in both . He cordially wished him a prosperous year of office , and that he might have more initiates than he ( Bro . Robinson ) had had . It had been a source of regret to himself that he had had so little to do , and now that he had been elected and invested as

Treasurer , he hoped to have good initiates , and a well-filled treasury . He asked them to drink the toast heartily . Bro . Russell , in response , said it was very kind of Bro . Robinson to speak so well of him . He certainly had tried to do the work well , and felt SIU-J that if the officers accorded him that support which had been given to his predecessor , his year of ollice , if not a prosperous one , would

at least be a pleasant one . Bros . F . G . Nichols , P . M . 44 , P . P . S . G . D ., and C . Jolly , M . O . 226 , P . P . G . O ., having responded to a cordial reception of the toast of " The Visitors , " the VV . M . gave the toast of " The Past Alasters , " and in response Bro . Wood said that , as he vvas the oldest Past Master present , it vvas his duty to speak Iirst . That evening they

had the distinguished honour of having their esteemed Prov . G . M ., Bro . Robinson , with them , for which they thanked him sincerely . It had also afforded him unusual pleasure to have had the honour of acting as Installing Officer that day , through the kindness of riro . Robinson , their I . P . M ., and installing their W . M . into the chair of the lodge . Bro . Russell was his nephew , and not only his nephew , but his coadjutor in his profession , and , having

been the latter for the last iS years , he knew how thoroughly and well he did everything he undertook , and he felt sure that he vvould carry out the same excellent work during his year of office . On behalf of himself he thanked them . Bro . Robinson having also added his testimony to the excellent work of the W . M ., and to the earnest desire of the Past Alasters to promote the best interests of the lodge , Bro . Heaps responded for "The Officers , " and then the Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings .
