Lord Mayor . The toast of the Masonic Charities was ably proposed by Bro . Davison , P . M ., and elicited a liberal response from the brethren . In compliment to the worthy chief magistrate of the city , who is one of the oldest P . M . ' s of the lodge and greatly esteemed by the brethren ,

the toast of " The Lord Mayor and Corporation of the ancient City of York , " was included in the list , and his lordship in responding thereto was most enthusiastically received . After an evening spent in social enjoyment , characterised throughout by harmony and brotherly love , the

brethren were called to labour and the lodge was duly closed . LIVERPOOL . —Mariner ' s Lodge ( No . 249 ) . — The usual monthly meeting of this lodge , held on New Year ' s night , was singularly successful and highly enjoyable , there being a large

" second " by Bro . Pearson . On the motion of Bro . Dr . Smith , P . M ., Treas . ; seconded by Bro . H . Pearson , I . P . M ., . £ 50 was voted from the funds of the lodge on behalf of the building of the new Masonic Temple , making upwards of £ 400 which has been subscribed for the

purpose by the lodge and individual members . Business over , a numerous company sat down to a seasonable and substantial repast . The W . M . gave " The Queen , and Prince and Princess of Wales , and our Masonic Rulers supreme and subordinate , " after which Bro . Dr .

Smith gave the health of the W . M . In doing so , he said it gave him all the greater pleasure to propose the toast on that occasion , because Bro . Rose , had now celebrated his semi-annual tenancy of the chair . He had fulfilled the duties of his office with great satisfaction , and there

could be no doubt that the progress and pleasure of the second half would be as great as the first . The W . M . in thanking the brethren for their enthusiastic reception of the toast , assured them that he had invariabl y endeavoured to do his duty to the best of his ability and

intimated that at their next meeting they would have a bread-and-cheese banquet . He hoped that this would meet with the approval of all the brethren , so that they might show more sincerel y the spirit and works of charity which were so

bound up in Freemasonry . The announcement was well received . The W . M . next gave the " P . M . ' s of No . 249 , " which was acknowledged by Bro . Dr . Smith , who stated that there was one thing above all others which had pleased him

that night , and that was the unanimous and enthusiastic manner in which the brethren of the lodge had agreed to the proposition of voting £$ 0 towards the building of the new ^ Masonic temple , which would make considerably over £ 400 from that lodge and its members . That was

something to be very proud of , but go on labouring for the same good cause . For himself , his services were always at their disposal , and if ever he could be of any service in this matter he would only be too happy to lend a helping hand . Bro . Dr . R . H . D . Johnston , P . M ., also

responded to the toast . The W . M . next proposed "Our newly Initiated Brethren , " which was suitably responded to . "The Visitors , " given from the chair , was acknowledged by Bro . A . Jones , A . Davies , and G . Lyall ; and "The Officers , " acknowledged by Bro . J . Hayes , J . W .

No greater treat was furnished during the evening—a singularly harmonious and happy one —than by the exceedingly funny comicalities of Bro . H . W . Nicholas , I . G . ( surnamed the " P . G . Comique" ) , whose reading and rendering of such songs as " The Editor , " ( said to have been written by an unknown author , named

Mac-Kenzie ) " Bill Jenkins , " and kindred productions , caused the utmost hilarity . Bro . Veale ( who was at the harmonium ) , Bro . Ellis , and Bro . Dr . Johnston also contributed to the pleasantness of the evening by giving some capital songs . LANCASTER . —Lodge of Fortitude ( No . 281 ) . ' —The annual installation in connection with this

ancient and prosperous lodge took place on Monday , the 29 th inst ., at the Masonic Rooms , Athenseum . The W . M ., Bro . Fleming , having opened the lodge in the first and second degrees and other business having been transacted , Dr . Moore , P . G . S . B . of England , was desired by the

W . M . to perform the ceremony of installing the W . M . elect , Bro . Edward Airey , into the chair of K . S ., to which he most cheerfully gave his assent , and forthwith discharged those duties in an effective manner , worthy of that distinguished officer . The town of Lancaster possesses in Bro .

Dr . Moore such an example of assiduity in the cause of Masonic art sufficient to make other towns desirous of the possession of such a brother , who is ever foremost in the cause of Masonry , and who has earned for himself the reputation of being one of the first installing

officers in the county Palatine ; this combined with the fact of the great popularity of the W . M . elect , Bro . Airey , who has made rapid strides and done much good work in the Craft , caused the brethren to assemble in large numbers to witness his installation . The following officers

were appointed : Bros . R . Gregson , S . W . ; T . Atkinson , J . W . ; James Hatch , Treasurer ; Edmund Simpson , Secretary ; ( entering on his 20 th year of office ) ; R . Taylor , S . D . ; Duff , J . D . ; Dr . Saul , I . G . Before the lodge was closed a sum of money was voted in order to make the J . W . a life Governor of the Royal

Masonic Institution for aged Freemasons and their Widows . A banquet ( at the King ' s Arms Hotel ) , of the most recherche character , provided by Bro . Joseph Sly , followed by the usual loyal Masonic toasts , brought to a close one of the largest and pleasantest meetings of the Lodge of Fortitude ever held .

for the first time in their new lodge , which is one of the handsomest in the West of England . Hitherto " Cornubian" has had a lodge room in the White Hart Hotel , but its numbers having so greatly increased—there being now above 80 members belonging to the lodge—it was felt

desirable to have a new lodge room . Premises suitable were found in the block of cottages at the side of the hotel , which formerl y constituted the old White Hart , and these were completely gutted , and an extremely handsome and commodious lodge has been formed therein . The

lodge is 38 ft . in length by 25 ft . in breadth , and 12 ft . 9 m . high . There is also an ante-room upstairs , 12 ft . by 9 ft . The lodge room has been prepared and decorated by Bro . Thomas Solomon , of Phoenix Lodge , Truro , P . P . S . G . W ., and for its good taste and elegance it reflects the

highest credit upon him and his assistants . The ceiling is a star pattern in gold on a white ground , the canopy is decorated in panels , and ethereal or azure blue prevails ; and there will be displayed in ornamental circles the emblems of the offices of the lodge ; the design on the paper is

of a small geometrical form . The walls of the room are panelled with ' a deep rich blue and gold star , and are intended to be adorned with the figures illustrative of Faith , Hope , Charity , Truth , Fortitude , Wisdom , Chastity , & c . Each panel round the room is supported by a

Corinthian oak pillar against a maple ground ; the cornices are painted out , or decorated , in a variety of tints , suited to the general embellishments . The porch , lobby , and staircase are papered with a plank oak paper in a series of niches , with which will be displayed figures

illustrative of the sciences , and several other sentiments . The lobb y will be a very handsome one when completed . The cost of the lodge is about a £$ oo , towards which there were funds in hand of about £%$ o ; some s £$ o more have been subscribed , and there will probably be

further subscriptions without trenching on the charities ; there is a surplus annual income of 6 c ? 8 o a year , so that any remaining debt may soon be liquidated . Bro . Solomon , who has done his work so well here , has two other lodges in hand , the Tregullow Lodge at St . Day , which is under

the special patronage and support of Bro . Sir Frederick Martin , Williams , Bart , M . P ., and the "One and AH" at Bodmin . The installation of the W . Master-Elect , Bro . James Mudge , P . M ., P . Prov . G . J . W ., was most ably performed by the retiring W . M . , Bro . James Pool , who was

warmly complimented for the manner in which the ceremony was conducted . The W . Master , who had already passed the chair , then appointed his officers : —Bro . W . Husband , S . W . ; H . J . Warren , J . W . j Frank Harvey , P . Prov . G . S . ofW . Treas . ; G . B . Pearce , Secretary ; Rev .
