Her Royal Highness the Princess Mary Duchess of Teck has very kindly consented to be present at a concert to be held in the Surbiton Assembly Rojtnsnn Wednesday , the 31 st inst ., in aid nf the London anil South-Western Railway Widows' and Orphans' Society and Orphanage .

A banquet was held at the Holborn Restaurant on Tuesday evening , under the presidency of M . Stockinger , the Austro-Hungarian Consul-General , to celebrate the literary jubilee of the most' distinguished wiiter of Hungary , namely , Moritz Jokai . A large number of the most distinguished Hungarian residents in London were present .

Lord Penrhyn is in communication with the Duke of York with a view to securing tlie presence of his Royal Highness at the Welsh National Eisteddfod , which will this year be held at Carnarvon . At a meeting of the executive < n Tuesday evening a letter was read from his lordship , in which it was stated that arrangements were being made for fixing the dates .

TI e Oueen has been pleased to signify her intention of conferring the honour of knighthood upon Hro . Henry Thcdy Prinsep , lately a judge of the High Court at Calcutta . Bro . Prinsep , whom we heartily congratulate on receiving this mark of recognition from her Majesty , has been District Master of Bengal ever since 1 S 7 S , and Grand Suptrintendent since 1 S 79 .

A memorial tablet to the late Earl of Lichfield , which has been erected in Great Heywood Church , Staffordshire , by public subscription , was dedicated on Saturday afternoon last by the Bishop of Lichfield , among those present being the Fail and Countess of Lichfield , the Drwager Countess of Lichfield , Lady Vernon , Bro . the Earl of Dartmouth , Lord Lieutenant of the County , the Earl nf Harrowby , and other relatives and friends of the deceased peer .

The annual hall of the Fairfield Lodge , No . 2224 , wa ; held in the large hall or the Sawley-road Board Schoil , Long Eaton , on Friday night , the 5 th inst ., when some 5 j couples assembled , principil ' y from the homes of the brethren connected with Lodge No . 2224 . Bro . J . VV . Chambers , W . M ., was the M . C , Bros . E . Williams and Dr . Bloomer being the Stewards . On Saturday night the annual children ' s ball took place in the same hill .

We regret to announce the death of Mr . John Byng , one of the attaches of the British Embassy at Paris . The deceased only arrived in Paris five weeks previously , dined with tne Marquis of Dufferin on the Sunday following his arrival , and the very next day took his bed , from which he never rose , having , it is supposed , taken with him to Paris the germs of typhoid fever . He was the son of Bro . Col . the Hon . IT . VV . J . Byng , P . G . W ., and wasonly 23 years of age .

The two new windows presented to Kew Church , the one by soldieis and sailors , and the other by parishioners and members of the congregation , in memory of the late Duchess of Cambridge , were formally uncovered on Sunday last , in the presence of the Duke ancl Duchess of Teck and their son , Prince Alexander . The complete set consists of four

windows , of which the other two were presented by the members of the late Duchess ' s family and Mr . Coleman , of St . Aubyns , respectively . The sermon was preached by the Rev . J . E . C Welldon , Master of Harrow , and among those present were General Lynedoch Gardiner , representing her Majesty .

The Prince of Wales returned to Marlborough House from visiting Iiarl Howe , at Amertham , on Saturday last , and travelled for the lirst time on the Underground Railway . A great amount of interest was manifested in Manchester on Monday on the occasion of the arrival of the first cargo of cattle by the Ship Canal . The beasts were from Belfast . We are glad to be able lo announce that the Duke and Duchess of Bedford and their infant son , the Marquis of Tavistock , are fast recovering from their attack of influenza , the son , however , being still confined to his bed .

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster have been entertaining a numerous house party at Eaton Hall , among the latest guests being Lord and Lady Arthur Grosvenor , Bro . Viscount Brackley , Lady Edward Cavendish , and Viscount and Viscountess Newport .

The attempt to secure the Albert Palace and adjacent grounds for the use of the public has failed . The premises are now in possession of the First Commissioner of Works , and , by his order , notice boards have been erected announcing that the site is for sale for building purposes .

The Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden , daughter of the Grand Duke of Baden , has been ordered by her medical adviser to visit Algiers on account of the unsatisfactory state of her Royal Highness ' s health , and will leave for the south towards the end of the present month .

Brethren are invited to send for the list of Masonic Books published at the office of the Freemason . Many works of interest both to the Masonic student and general reader have recently been added , and the publisher will gladly forward a copy to any address on receipt of a post-card .

The funeral of the late Lord Crewe took place on Monday in Barthomley Churchyard , about six miles from Crewe , the principal mourners including Lord Houghton , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , nephew of the deceased peer , Sir Gerald Fitzgerald , the Hon . A . IT . Henniker-Major , and Canon Blackburne .

A fire broke out on Saturday morning last at the Royal Free Hospital , Gray ' s Inn-road , but such was the energetic action of the officials that no extensive damage was caused the room in which it broke out , that immediately below it , and the boaul-room , being the only apaitments that suffered .

Tie funeral service in honour of Baron Henri Solvyns , Belgian Minister in London , took place in the Brompton Oratory on Monday , when there was present a large gathering of the representatives of the Diplomatic Corps as well as of the Queen , the Prince of Wales , the Duke of Connaught , the Dukeof Cambridge , and Prince Christian . 1 he interment afterwards took place at the Kensal Green

Cemetery . The customary offerings of gold , frankincense , and myrrh were made on behalf of the ( jjeen at the Chapel Royal , St . James ' s , on Saturday last , being the l '" estival of the Epiphany . The . gifts were presented by two of the Oueen ' s Gentlemen Ushers-in-Waiting , and the Bichop of London , as Dean of the Chapel Royal , assisted by the Sub-Dean and the Priests-in-Waiting , officiated .

Bro . Duncan Macdonald , who completed his year of office as VV . M . of the Loyal Cambrian Lodge of Freemasons at Merthyr on the 4 th inst ., was not only presented with the usual jewal by the general brethren of the lodge , but was also presented with a jewel by the Scottish members to signalise the fact of his being the lirst occupant of the chair who had hailed from " across the border . "

A correspondent writes . — " It may interest the Freemason to know that Captain Iidward Augustus William Lendy , D . S . O ., who has just met his death in the unfortunate encounter with French troops in Sierra Leone , was initiated in the Tuscan Lodge , No . 14 , on the 25 th October , 1892 , only a few days before hc left to take up his appointment as Inspector-General of Border Police . He took his other Degrees in a lodge in Sierra Leone . He was , I believe , a son of Lieut .-Col . Ltndy , of Sunbury . "

The barque Colleen of Belfast was wrecked a mile west of Bally Coulton on Thursday , only four of the crew being saved , the remainder , 10 in number , including the captain , being all drowned . The vessel lies about 200 yards from shore . Shortly alter midnight on Monday a Norwegian steamer ,

laden with timber , grounded off IJungeness , there being at the time one of the densest fogs ever known in the Channel . It is also feared that a foreign vessel was run down in the Channel off Whitstable , two bodies and much wreckage having been washed ashore .

The Most Worshipful Grand Master has been good enough to grant a dispensation , applied for on behalf of the Whittington Lodge , No . S 02 , to wear Masonic clothing at a seivice to be held in the parish church of St . James ' , Garlickhithe , Upper Thames-street , E . Annette de 'Trafford , Viscount Dungarvan , the Hon . Humphrey Sturt , Baron de Hirscb , and Mr . L . XO Harcourt . On Tuesday evening , the 45 th annual grand Masonic ball , in aid of the lunds of the VVest Lancashire Masonic Educational Institution , was held at the Town Hall ,

Liverpool , under most distinguished patronage . A very large company assembled , and as nearly all the gentlemen guests were in full Masonic clothing , a very brilliant spectacle was the result . It is expected that the funds of the Institution , as in former years , will benefit very materially by the ball . A report appears in another column .

Bro . Daniel Alston , merchant and miller , of Glemsford , died somewhat unexpectedly on Tuesday , the 9 th instant . Bro . Alston was a prominent Mason , being a P . M ., and took great interest in the Craft . Bro . Alston took cold a few days since ; it was hoped he would soon be out again

but he succumbed on that day at his own residence , The Mill , Glemsford , at half-past four o ' clock . He died of pneumonia . The deceased brother leaves a wife and five children . He was about 4 G years of age . Bro . Alston was the proprietor of the Rose and Crown Hotel , Sudbury .

The medals and funds to be given at the anniversary meeting of the Geological Society of London on the 16 th prox . have been awarded as follows : The Wollaston to Professor Karl A . von Zittel , the Murchison to Mr . XV . T . Aveline , the Lyell to Professor John Milne , F . R . S . ; the

The Duchess of Teck was present at the Albert Hall , at an entertainment given by the members of the Young Helpers' League , of which her Royal Highi . ess is President , on behalf of the waifs and strays in Dr . Barnardo ' s Homes . Lord Rookwcoi welcomed the Duchess on her arrival in the name of the Reception Committee . The

programme included a musical drill of " little women " from the Girls' Village Home at liford , and a game of Association football in the arena , with seven players on each side . During an interval in the entertainment the Duchess of Teck received purses presented by companions of the League .

Blundell Maple upon his recovery from his recent serious illness , and welcoming his return to Tottenham Court-road , has just been presented by the employes of Maple and Co .

( Limited ) . The address , which was enclosed in a very beautiful carved and painted satin-wood casket of late Louts XV . period , bears signatures representing nearl y 3000 employes , and is an eloquent testimony to the popularity of Sir J . Blundell Maple , as well as to the excellent feeling existing throughout the vast establishment .

On Saturday last the remains of Bro . John M'Ewen , of Grit If , who for a long period of Go years had taken a prominent part in the affairs of that town and district , were interred in Crieff Cemetery with Masonic honours . The deceased had been a member ot Crieff St . Michael ' s Lodge , No . 3-S , for the long time of 54 years , and no longer back

than St . John ' s Night Bro . M'Ewen , who was present , stated that he had taken part in all the annual general meetings during that period with the exception of one . 1 here was a large turn outof the brethren , as well as of the general public , and the service at the grave was conducted by Bro . Rev . Dr . Cosans , of St . Columba's Episcopal Church , the Chaplain of the lodge .

The officers and members of St . Kew Lodge , Westonsuper-Mare , in accordance with annual custom , invited about 300 poor persons to a meat tea in the Victoria Hall on Monday evening . There was a general response to the invitation , and the tea , cake , meat , & c , were provided by Bro . Huntley . During tea the Grosvenor Quintette Band played selections of music . After tea an excellent musical

entertainment was given , the old folks being thoroughl y delighted . During the . evening , in a neat little speech , Bio . VV . li . Perrett , jun ., presented the W . M ., Bro . J . P . Lapcll , with a handsome oak and silver tobacco box , to be used on similar occasions , and to be considered the property of the lodge . The W . M . accepted the gift with thanks .

The recent spell of hard frostand snow must have greatly exercised the minds of all who possess plants , even in greenhouses , where the most extensive arrangements are made lor heating , but to the ordinary householder whose possessions , altnough equally treasured , are limited to a conservatory or greenhouse dependant on improvised heating arrangements it must have come as anything but a

welcome visitor . The happy _ owner , however , of one Mr . Sam . 'Deard ' s "Little Samson" hot water heating apparatuses could at any time during the frost look at the ' thermometer with ind . fference ; lhe best results from ' their use is reported , and as they are reasonable in price , will go a week without refilling , and require little or no attention , tney should be in the * hands of everybody .

A great amount of interest was manifested in Manchester on Monday on the occasion of the arrival of the first cargo of cattle by the Ship Canal . The beasts were from Belfast . We are glad to be able lo announce that the Duke and Duchess of Bedford and their infant son , the Marquis of Tavistock , are fast recovering from their attack of influenza , the son , however , being still confined to his bed .

The Duke and Duchess of Westminster have been entertaining a numerous house party at Eaton Hall , among the latest guests being Lord and Lady Arthur Grosvenor , Bro . Viscount Brackley , Lady Edward Cavendish , and Viscount and Viscountess Newport .

The attempt to secure the Albert Palace and adjacent grounds for the use of the public has failed . The premises are now in possession of the First Commissioner of Works , and , by his order , notice boards have been erected announcing that the site is for sale for building purposes .

The Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden , daughter of the Grand Duke of Baden , has been ordered by her medical adviser to visit Algiers on account of the unsatisfactory state of her Royal Highness ' s health , and will leave for the south towards the end of the present month .

The funeral of the late Lord Crewe took place on Monday in Barthomley Churchyard , about six miles from Crewe , the principal mourners including Lord Houghton , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , nephew of the deceased peer , Sir Gerald Fitzgerald , the Hon . The . gifts were presented by two of the Oueen ' s Gentlemen Ushers-in-Waiting , and the Bichop of London , as Dean of the Chapel Royal , assisted by the Sub-Dean and the Priests-in-Waiting , officiated .

Bro . Duncan Macdonald , who completed his year of office as VV . M . of the Loyal Cambrian Lodge of Freemasons at Merthyr on the 4 th inst ., was not only presented with the usual jewal by the general brethren of the lodge , but was also presented with a jewel by the Scottish members to signalise the fact of his being the lirst occupant of the chair who had hailed from " across the border . "

A correspondent writes . — " It may interest the Freemason to know that Captain Iidward Augustus William Lendy , D . S . O ., who has just met his death in the unfortunate encounter with French troops in Sierra Leone , was initiated in the Tuscan Lodge , No . 14 , on the 25 th October , 1892 , only a few days before hc left to take up his appointment as Inspector-General of Border Police . He took his other Degrees in a lodge in Sierra Leone . He was , I believe , a son of Lieut .-Col . Ltndy , of Sunbury . "

The barque Colleen of Belfast was wrecked a mile west of Bally Coulton on Thursday , only four of the crew being saved , the remainder , 10 in number , including the captain , being all drowned . The vessel lies about 200 yards from shore . Shortly alter midnight on Monday a Norwegian steamer ,

laden with timber , grounded off IJungeness , there being at the time one of the densest fogs ever known in the Channel . It is also feared that a foreign vessel was run down in the Channel off Whitstable , two bodies and much wreckage having been washed ashore .

Liverpool , under most distinguished patronage . A very large company assembled , and as nearly all the gentlemen guests were in full Masonic clothing , a very brilliant spectacle was the result . Bro . Daniel Alston , merchant and miller , of Glemsford , died somewhat unexpectedly on Tuesday , the 9 th instant . Bro . Alston was a prominent Mason , being a P . M ., and took great interest in the Craft . Bro . Alston took cold a few days since ; it was hoped he would soon be out again

but he succumbed on that day at his own residence , The Mill , Glemsford , at half-past four o ' clock . He died of pneumonia . The deceased brother leaves a wife and five children . He was about 4 G years of age . Bro . Alston was the proprietor of the Rose and Crown Hotel , Sudbury .

The Duchess of Teck was present at the Albert Hall , at an entertainment given by the members of the Young Helpers' League , of which her Royal Highi . ess is President , on behalf of the waifs and strays in Dr . Barnardo ' s Homes . Lord Rookwcoi welcomed the Duchess on her arrival in the name of the Reception Committee . The

programme included a musical drill of " little women " from the Girls' Village Home at liford , and a game of Association football in the arena , with seven players on each side . During an interval in the entertainment the Duchess of Teck received purses presented by companions of the League .

Blundell Maple upon his recovery from his recent serious illness , and welcoming his return to Tottenham Court-road , has just been presented by the employes of Maple and Co .

( Limited ) . The address , which was enclosed in a very beautiful carved and painted satin-wood casket of late Louts XV . period , bears signatures representing nearl y 3000 employes , and is an eloquent testimony to the popularity of Sir J . Blundell Maple , as well as to the excellent feeling existing throughout the vast establishment .

On Saturday last the remains of Bro . John M'Ewen , of Grit If , who for a long period of Go years had taken a prominent part in the affairs of that town and district , were interred in Crieff Cemetery with Masonic honours . The deceased had been a member ot Crieff St . Michael ' s Lodge , No . 3-S , for the long time of 54 years , and no longer back

than St . John ' s Night Bro . M'Ewen , who was present , stated that he had taken part in all the annual general meetings during that period with the exception of one . 1 here was a large turn outof the brethren , as well as of the general public , and the service at the grave was conducted by Bro . Rev . Dr . Cosans , of St . Columba's Episcopal Church , the Chaplain of the lodge .

After tea an excellent musical

entertainment was given , the old folks being thoroughl y delighted . During the . evening , in a neat little speech , Bio . VV . li . Perrett , jun ., presented the W . M ., Bro . J . P . Lapcll , with a handsome oak and silver tobacco box , to be used on similar occasions , and to be considered the property of the lodge . The W . M . accepted the gift with thanks .
