Bro . Daniel Alston , merchant and miller , of Glemsford , died somewhat unexpectedly on Tuesday , the 9 th instant . Bro . Alston was a prominent Mason , being a P . M ., and took great interest in the Craft . Bro . Alston took cold a few days since ; it was hoped he would soon be out again
but he succumbed on that day at his own residence , The Mill , Glemsford , at half-past four o ' clock . He died of pneumonia . The deceased brother leaves a wife and five children . He was about 4 G years of age . Bro . Alston was the proprietor of the Rose and Crown Hotel , Sudbury .

A great amount of interest was manifested in Manchester on Monday on the occasion of the arrival of the first cargo of cattle by the Ship Canal . The beasts were from Belfast . We are glad to be able lo announce that the Duke and Duchess of Bedford and their infant son , the Marquis of Tavistock , are fast recovering from their attack of influenza , the son , however , being still confined to his bed .
The Duke and Duchess of Westminster have been entertaining a numerous house party at Eaton Hall , among the latest guests being Lord and Lady Arthur Grosvenor , Bro . Viscount Brackley , Lady Edward Cavendish , and Viscount and Viscountess Newport .
The attempt to secure the Albert Palace and adjacent grounds for the use of the public has failed . The premises are now in possession of the First Commissioner of Works , and , by his order , notice boards have been erected announcing that the site is for sale for building purposes .
The Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden , daughter of the Grand Duke of Baden , has been ordered by her medical adviser to visit Algiers on account of the unsatisfactory state of her Royal Highness ' s health , and will leave for the south towards the end of the present month .

The funeral of the late Lord Crewe took place on Monday in Barthomley Churchyard , about six miles from Crewe , the principal mourners including Lord Houghton , Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , nephew of the deceased peer , Sir Gerald Fitzgerald , the Hon . A . IT . Henniker-Major , and Canon Blackburne .

The . gifts were presented by two of the Oueen ' s Gentlemen Ushers-in-Waiting , and the Bichop of London , as Dean of the Chapel Royal , assisted by the Sub-Dean and the Priests-in-Waiting , officiated .
Bro . Duncan Macdonald , who completed his year of office as VV . M . of the Loyal Cambrian Lodge of Freemasons at Merthyr on the 4 th inst ., was not only presented with the usual jewal by the general brethren of the lodge , but was also presented with a jewel by the Scottish members to signalise the fact of his being the lirst occupant of the chair who had hailed from " across the border . A correspondent writes . — " It may interest the Freemason to know that Captain Iidward Augustus William Lendy , D . S . O ., who has just met his death in the unfortunate encounter with French troops in Sierra Leone , was initiated in the Tuscan Lodge , No . 14 , on the 25 th October , 1892 , only a few days before hc left to take up his appointment as Inspector-General of Border Police . He took his other Degrees in a lodge in Sierra Leone . He was , I believe , a son of Lieut .-Col . Ltndy , of Sunbury . "
The barque Colleen of Belfast was wrecked a mile west of Bally Coulton on Thursday , only four of the crew being saved , the remainder , 10 in number , including the captain , being all drowned . The vessel lies about 200 yards from shore . Shortly alter midnight on Monday a Norwegian steamer ,
laden with timber , grounded off IJungeness , there being at the time one of the densest fogs ever known in the Channel . It is also feared that a foreign vessel was run down in the Channel off Whitstable , two bodies and much wreckage having been washed ashore .

Bro . Daniel Alston , merchant and miller , of Glemsford , died somewhat unexpectedly on Tuesday , the 9 th instant . Bro . Alston was a prominent Mason , being a P . M ., and took great interest in the Craft . Bro . Alston took cold a few days since ; it was hoped he would soon be out again
but he succumbed on that day at his own residence , The Mill , Glemsford , at half-past four o ' clock . He died of pneumonia . The deceased brother leaves a wife and five children . He was about 4 G years of age . Bro . Alston was the proprietor of the Rose and Crown Hotel , Sudbury .

The Duchess of Teck was present at the Albert Hall , at an entertainment given by the members of the Young Helpers' League , of which her Royal Highi . ess is President , on behalf of the waifs and strays in Dr . Barnardo ' s Homes . Lord Rookwcoi welcomed the Duchess on her arrival in the name of the Reception Committee . The
programme included a musical drill of " little women " from the Girls' Village Home at liford , and a game of Association football in the arena , with seven players on each side . During an interval in the entertainment the Duchess of Teck received purses presented by companions of the League .

Blundell Maple upon his recovery from his recent serious illness , and welcoming his return to Tottenham Court-road , has just been presented by the employes of Maple and Co .
( Limited ) . The address , which was enclosed in a very beautiful carved and painted satin-wood casket of late Louts XV . period , bears signatures representing nearl y 3000 employes , and is an eloquent testimony to the popularity of Sir J . Blundell Maple , as well as to the excellent feeling existing throughout the vast establishment .
On Saturday last the remains of Bro . John M'Ewen , of Grit If , who for a long period of Go years had taken a prominent part in the affairs of that town and district , were interred in Crieff Cemetery with Masonic honours . The deceased had been a member ot Crieff St . Michael ' s Lodge , No . 3-S , for the long time of 54 years , and no longer back
than St . John ' s Night Bro . M'Ewen , who was present , stated that he had taken part in all the annual general meetings during that period with the exception of one . 1 here was a large turn outof the brethren , as well as of the general public , and the service at the grave was conducted by Bro . Rev . Dr . Cosans , of St . Columba's Episcopal Church , the Chaplain of the lodge .

The officers and members of St . Kew Lodge , Westonsuper-Mare , in accordance with annual custom , invited about 300 poor persons to a meat tea in the Victoria Hall on Monday evening . There was a general response to the invitation , and the tea , cake , meat , & c , were provided by Bro . Huntley . During tea the Grosvenor Quintette Band played selections of music . After tea an excellent musical
entertainment was given , the old folks being thoroughl y delighted . During the . evening , in a neat little speech , Bio . VV . li . Perrett , jun ., presented the W . M ., Bro . J . P . Lapcll , with a handsome oak and silver tobacco box , to be used on similar occasions , and to be considered the property of the lodge . The W . M . accepted the gift with thanks .
