THE SHRIEVALTY . —Bro . Thomas Clarke ( candidate for the office of Sheriff of London and Middlesex on Midsummer Day next ) has been for many years in the Craft , and is now in nomination as a joining member of the Alliance ( Guildhall ) Lodge . Bro . Clarke is a native of Lincolnshire ; he came to London some 20 years ago , since which time he has , by industry and perseverance , amassed

a considerable fortune , and , although he now desires to become useful to his fellow-men , both in Municipal life , as also in Parliament , Bro . Clarke has , with true Masonic feeling , not forgotten the poor of his native town , and intends at once to erect almhouses on an estate which he has

recently purchased for £ 12 , 000 , so that those who have seen better days , but are now in decay , may pass the remainder of their life without anxiety or sorrow . Bro . the Earl of Carnarvon , Pro Grand Master , whose health has much improved of late , left Highclere Castle for his residence in Portman-square , on Tuesday .

Bro . Alderman Sir J . W . Ellis , Bart ., M . P ., is one of the Vice-Presidents of the newly formed Wimbledon and Merton Branch of the Early Closing Association . Bro . Justice Field has been prevented by indisposition from attending his judicial duties for some time

past , but his lordship was able to resume his attendance in Court on Monday . Bro . Sir Farrer Herschell , Q . C ., M . P ., H . M . ' s Solicitor-General , laid the foundation stone of a new Congregational Church in the city of Durham , on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst .

The Prince of Wales has fixed on July 4 th for the opening of the Albany Memorial and other buildings of the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic , Queen-square , Bloomsbury . The Baroness and Bro . W . A . Burdett-Coutts left town for Sheffield in the course of last week , and on Thursday , the 4 th inst ., opened a bazaar in Cutler ' s Hall

in aid of the funds of the Jessop's Hospital for Women . Application was made on Tuesday b y the Prince of Wales to the Court of Aldermen that his Royal Highness might be " recorded " in the Fishmongers' Company , ami the application was at once acceded to . the Mary Wardell Convalescent Home for Scarlet Fever , of which H . R . H . the Princess of Wales is patroness . at New Barnet on Wednesday next , the 17 th inst ., with the object of reducing a debt on the Congregational Church from £ 5200 to £ 2000 , when a sum of ^ 500 , conditionally promised by Mr . S . Morley , M . P ., will become available . Bro . Sir Charles Dilke , Bart ., M . P ., has consented to lay the foundation-stone of the Industrial Dwellings , Chatham-gardens . The event is fixed for

Whalley . the well-known Dramatic Reader and Shakesperian Exponent of West Yorkshire , was amongst the few who enjoyed the friendship of the late Duke ol Albany , and as some remembrance of that acquaintance he was favoured last week with the portrait

of her Royal Hi g hness the Duchess and the infant Duke and Princess Victoria of Albany , beautifully painted in water colours . meeting at the Guildhall Tavern , on Wednesday , the 3 rd inst ., of the London General Porters' Benevolent Association . establishing a provident dispensary . Bro . W . Ganz , P . G . Organist , gave his annual concert at his residence in Harley-street , Cavendish-square on Tuesday evening last , when there avas an admirable programme , and a numerous and fashionable audience present .

Bro . Alderman Sir F . W . Truscott has declined the invitation to be nominated as a candidate at the approaching General Election for the St . Austell division of Cornwall . Bros . M . C . Buszard , Q . C , M . P ., Captain George Lambert , P . G . S . B ., Lieut .-General Randolph , and Sir Patrick Colquhoun were among the guests at the dinner given on Tuesday evening by the Curriers' Company .

Bros . Alderman Staples , Major Joseph , and Captain George Lambert were present at the meeting , at Tallow Chandlers' Hall on Tuesday afternoon , of the London and Middlesex Archaeological Society . We regret to hear that Bro . Horace Jones , City Architect , G . S . of Works , has latterly been in somewhat indifferent health , though this has not prevented him from attending to his official duties .

Sir H . W . Williams-Wynn , Bart ., M . P ., has expressed his intention of erecting a cottage hospital at Ruabon as a memorial to his late uncle , R . W . Bro . Sir W Williams-Wynn , Bart ., M . P ., P . G . M . North Wales and Salop .

The annual official inspection of the London Rifle Brigade took place on the Guards' Ground , Hyde Park , on Saturday last , the inspecting officers being Colonel Clive of the Grenadier Guards , and the officers in command of the Brigade , Bro . Lieut .-Col . Lord E . Pelham-Clinton .

Bro . the Lord Mayor opened on Thursday , the 4 th inst . at Waltham Abbey , the annual show of the Essex Agricultural Society , Bro . the Duke of Connaught , who had been announcer ! to be present , being still on his way home from India . His lordship , who was accompanied by the Lady Mayoress , experienced a very cordial reception .

Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Whitehead ( Master ) presided at a Court of the Fanmakers' Company on Monday evening , when a vote of condolence was passed with the widow and family of the late Bro . C . W . Thompson , and a sum of £ 100 voted towards the fund now being raised on their behalf .

The second meeting of the ladies patronesses of the Royal Caledonian Ball was held at Willis ' s Rooms , on Monday last , there being present , among others , the Duchess of Atholl . the Countess of Mar and Kellie , the Countess of Lindsay , and the Countess of Northesk , together with R . W . Bro . the Duke of Atholl , president and treasurer of the ball .

Bro . Alderman and Sheriff Whitehead will act as interim Chairman , and Bro . H . H . Crawford ( City solicitor ) as one of the honorary Secretaries of the fund proposed to be raised for the widow and family of the late Bro . C . W . Thompson , whose early death and generous kindness to others had prevented him making suitable provision for their requirements .

At the dinner at the Lion Hotel , Farningham , on the sth inst ., of the Billingsgate Market Committee , Bro . J . Judd , CC , past Chairman , and lately member of the Committee , was presented with a handsome silver tea and coffee service and salver , as a testimonial of the respect in which his services were held and the courtesy he had uniformly shown to the members . The salver had on it a suitable inscription expressive of their feelings .

Bro . W . H . Sharp , who has recentl y become " mine host" of the Griffin Hotel , Kingston-on-Thames , is giving great satisfaction to the brethren who assemble under his roof . The Dobic Lodge and Chapter and the Mozait Lodge and Chapter find there a comfortable and convenient habitat , and some few alterations now in progress will provide still more accommodation . The banqueting 100 m is a handsome and commodious apartment .

Bro . Buszard , of Oxford-street , whose reputation as a confectioner stands deservedly high , is the maker of the wedding cake which will be presented to Princess Beatrice by the Ladies of Kent . The cake , which is really several cakes in one , is a most elaborate structure , a marvel of the confectioner's art , and is very handsomely embellished with shields bearing the atmorial devices of the Princess and her future husband , Prince Henry of Battenberg .

Thompson , whose early death and generous kindness to others had prevented him making suitable provision for their requirements .

At the dinner at the Lion Hotel , Farningham , on the sth inst ., of the Billingsgate Market Committee , Bro . J . Judd , CC , past Chairman , and lately member of the Committee , was presented with a handsome silver tea and coffee service and salver , as a testimonial of the respect in which his services were held and the courtesy he had uniformly shown to the members . The salver had on it a suitable inscription expressive of their feelings .

Bro . W . H . Sharp , who has recentl y become " mine host" of the Griffin Hotel , Kingston-on-Thames , is giving great satisfaction to the brethren who assemble under his roof . The Dobic Lodge and Chapter and the Mozait Lodge and Chapter find there a comfortable and convenient habitat , and some few alterations now in progress will provide still more accommodation . The banqueting 100 m is a handsome and commodious apartment .

Bro . Buszard , of Oxford-street , whose reputation as a confectioner stands deservedly high , is the maker of the wedding cake which will be presented to Princess Beatrice by the Ladies of Kent . The cake , which is really several cakes in one , is a most elaborate structure , a marvel of the confectioner's art , and is very handsomely embellished with shields bearing the atmorial devices of the Princess and her future husband , Prince Henry of Battenberg .
