occasion . As far as I am concerned it gives me great p leasure to see such a concourse of brethren from my own province , as well as from other distant provinces , and from London , who have come up at great inconvenience to themselves to support , not me , but this noble Institution . I hays also great pride in feeling as I do , when I look round on this assemblage and see that any words which

it is in my power to make use of in aid of this Institution will no doubt be vastly thrown in the shade by the deeds of those I see around me . At the same time , as Chairman of the festival , I feel I may be excused if I call your attention to the very urgent need there is for an effort to be made on behalf of this Institution on this occasion . From the summary I have given you in regard to the

finances you will remember that , taking the two branches of the Institution together , there are at the next election seventy-eight candidates and only nineteen vacancies , so that unless a sum can be collected sufficiently large to justify the Committee in increasing the number by fiftynine they would have to wait another year before they can have another chance of election . The

amount paid to annuitants per annum is £ 10 , 820 . The working expenses , the repairs to thc Asylum , and other expenses are about £ 2 , 200 , making together £ 13 , 020 . The permanent income is only £ 2 , 395 , and therefore the remainder has to be raised by subscriptions from the Masons at large . In proposing this toast I feci certain that the Institution will benefit largely from the

result of this festival . I will ask you to drink the toast both heartily and cordially . This Institution has for years continued to do good work , and so may it go on , not only as it has done , but with increased energy and vitality . With this toast I beg to couple the name of Colonel Creaton , your Treasurer . The toast hating been drunk very heartily , Colonel

Creaton , in reply , said : It is my duty as 1 reasurer of this Institution to return thanks for the very kind manner in which the toast has been proposed by our noble and worthy Chairman ; and I must take this opportunity of assuring his lordship that we are deeply indebted to him for coming here to-night and taking the chair . ( Cheers . ) I am convinced that the result of this evening ' s festival

will not fall far short of our expectations , and should the list which is about to be read come up to our anticipations I shall consider it my boanden duty to propose at the next committee meeting that the number of annuitants be increased . ( Cheers . ) I knew , brethren , that you are all on tiptoe to hear our excellent Secretary read his list , and therefore I will at once conclude by thanking you for the way in which you have received the toast . ( Cheers . )

James Terry then rose and said : Permit me in the first instance to assure you that the result of this festival will be extremely gratifying to you all , considering that we have seventy-two stewards less than we had last year , and that the year through which we have passed has been a dreadful one , on account of thc depression in trade .
