thc Secretary , having replied , the toast of " The Officers " was proposed , and it was acknowledged by Bros . Speedy , Webb , Marsden , Stokes , Stranger , and Bolton . The Tyler having been called upon to discharge his duty , the proceedings , which were throughout most enjoyable , terminated .

MEW CROSS LODGE ( No . 1559 ) . —Saturday last was the fourth anniversary cf the consecration of this Lodge , and , in response to the call from Bro . Secretary , a large number of members and their friends assembled at the lodge-rooms , situate in the Ncw Cross Public Hall , Lewisham High Road , to do honour to thc incoming W . M . Since the consecration ceremony was performed in

1876 , the Master ' s chair has been cc-.-upicd as follows . — 1876-7 , Bros . W . B . Woodman ; 1877-8 , H . Keeble ; 1878-9 , "ft * . Simmonds ; 1879-S 0 , Louis Beck , and during the whole of these reigns Bro . E . H . Thiellay has sat behind the S . W . ' s pedestal , having been ineligible on account of his occupying the chair of other lodges . His turn to rule the New Cross brethren has , however , come at

last , and on Saturday he was duly installed as the fifth Master of the lodge . Lodge was opened by the retiring W . M ., Bro . Louis Beck , P . G . O . Middx ., P . M . Rothesay , who was supported by his officers , viz ., Bros . E . H . Thiellay , P . M . 73 , P . G . S . B . Middx ., S . W . ; J . M . Docker , P . M . 1687 ( acting in the absence of Bro . Green , S . W . ) ; H . Keeble , P . M ., Sec . ; Ernest E . Smith , S . D . ; W . Cowley ,

J . D . ; T . Grummant , I . G ., Church , Tyler ; J . Moss , D . C ; Hiram Henton , S . Wise , A . Priest , W . Cropley , W . Waters , J . Ross , F . W . Cash , G . Whichrlow , W . Bull , jun . ; and among the visitors we noticed Bros . J . T . Moss , P . G . R . Middx ., P . M . 1923 ; E . J . Bumstead , P . M . 548 ; J . B . Docker , P . M . 1687 , and others . Wc heard with deep regret that Bro . A . Macgillivray , W . S ., had met with an

accident of such a grave nature that amputation of the leg had been necessary . The announcement of this sad news was received among the brethren with deep regret , Bro . Macgillivray having made himself universally popular in the lodge , and earned the esteem of all connected with it . Lodge having been opened up to the Third Degree , and closed down again , the minutes of the last lodge meeting

were duly read and passed , and the Auditor ' s report presented and adopted . Two candidates for raising were announced or . the summons , " out neither being present , the ceremony of installation was then proceeded with . Bro . H . Keeble , P . M . 1275 , 73 , and 1559 , Treasurer , then presented Bro . E . II . Thiellay , S . VV . ' , the W . M . elect , who was then installed in the chair of K . S . by his predecessor ,

Bro . Beck performing thc rites and ceremonies in a thoroughly efficient manner . The brethren in Degrees having been re-admitted , saluted their new chief in the customary manner , and the W . M . then proceeded to invest his officers as follows : —Bros . Ernest E . Smith , S . W . ; W . Cowley , J . W . ; H . Keeble , P . M ., Treasurer ; W . Simmonds , I . P . M ., Secretary ; T . Grummant , S . D . ; A . Macgillivray

( by deputy ) , J . D . ; Hiram Henton , I . G . ; S . Wise , W . S . ; A . Priest , D . C . ; W . Scurr , Asst . W . S . ; Church , Tyler , all of which appointments evidently gave the greatest satisfaction . Bro . Moss then brought forward a motion "To alter the day of meeting from Saturday to Tuesday , " Bro , Bull seconding , whereupon Bro . Smith , S . W ., proposed as an amendment " That the day of meeting remain

as it is , " which was seconded by Bro . P . M . Keeble , Treasurer , and upon being put to the brethren was declared carried . A similar notice of motion was given by Bro . Bull to be brought forward at the next meeting of the lodge . Bro . Ernest Smith , S . W ., then proposed a vote of thanks to the I . P . M ., Bro . Beck , for the praiseworthy manner in which he had

installed his successor , and this being seconded by Bro . Cowley , J . W ., was carried unanimously . Bro . Beck made a suitable reply . It was likewise decided unanimously to address a letter of condolence to Bro . Macgillivray , J . D ., who , as before alluded to , has met with a severe accidei . t . The W . M . then presented Bro . Beck with a liaiidauine Past Master ' s jewel , in recognition of the

services he has rendered the lodge , and the admirable manner in which he had carried out the duties of his office for the past twelve months . Bro . Beck , in acknowledging the honour bestowed upon him , assured the brethren that his interest in thc lodge would continue in the same measure as before , and that as a founder he was proud of having worked through its chair . The Secretary then read a

letter from Bro . H . J . Green , P . M ., announcing his resignation through increasing ill-health . On the motion of Bro . Beck , P . M ., the resignation was accepted with general regret . All Masonic business being ended , the lodge was closed in due form . An adjournment now took place to the banqueting hall , where the lodge purveyor , Mr . G . Leidig , and his attendants had for some time previously

been extremely busy . Thc upshot of their labours was in the first place an effectively decorated table , and in the second the dispensation of an excellent menu , which from start to finish apparently excited the liveliest interest amongst all present . No need then for us to expatiate on the merits of " thick " or " clear ; " no need to dilate on the seductive properties of certan entremets , and it is

unnecessary to dwell upon the excellence of boiled and roast , ' capons and tuikeys , or the idoneous supply of " trifles light as air" in the shape of jellies , snow and ice puddings . There exists a section of our brotherhood who would do away with the conviviality of thc Masonic banquet . There are some who would advocate " sandwidges and hale " as sufficient and satisfactory refreshments after the

labours of the evening . Perish the thought ; away with such iconoclasts ; the Masonic banquet—particularly on installation occasions—is a great and glorious institution , and so it is considered at 1559 . Well , having reached that normal period of indigestion , i . e ., when thc flippant nut and luscious grape appear , the W . M ., having assumed the perpendicular , proposed the usual loyal and Masonic toasts , whicli it is needless to say were cordially

honoured . The I . P . M . followed with thc toast which is one of the emoluments of his office , that of his successor , and in giving " The Health of thc W . M ., " Bro . Beck remarked that he trusted Bro . Thiellay would enjoy a prosperous year of office . The brethren received the toast with " New Cross fire , " and the W . M . replied . He observed , that having been connected with the lodge since

its consecration , he had been arforded every opportunity of watching its rise and development , lt had during this time devolved upon him tr . occupy the chairs of other and older lodges , and in consequence had remained in his original position of S . W ., but now he found himself in the proud position of W . M ., and he might observe was the last of the line of founders of 1559 to

occupy the chair . He was convinced that the brethren , one and all , took the deepest interest in the welfare of the lodge , as he himself had done in the past . As regarded the future he considered himself doubly , aye , trebly , beholden to evince the same active and not a passive interest in all that concerned the vvellbeing and prosperity of the New Cross Lodge . Before sitting down he

would ask them to drink to the health of their Immediate Past Master , Bro . Beck , who had that afternoon installed him in the chair of K . S ., this being , he believed , the first instance of an occupant of the New Cross chair installing his successor . The toast was enthusiasiically received , and Bro . Beck , in the course of a lengthy reply , referred to some observations he made upon the occasion of his

installation . He then stated that he hoped to leave the position in the possession of their fullest confidence . Well , he had made way for his successor that afternoon —and a worthy successor he was—and after the presentation he had received at his hands in the name cf the lodge he was sitisfied that his hopes of a twelvemonth back had been fullv realised . "The Visitors" was

acknowledged at length by Bros . J . T . Mess , P . P . G . R . Middx . ; Bumstead , P . M . 54 8 ; and Docker , P . M . 168 ; ; each of whom referred to previous enjoyable visits to New Cross . The W . M . next proposed "The Treasurer and Secretary , " which was enthusiastically received . Bro . Keeble , P . M ., Treasurer , in reply , spoke of his long connection with thc lodge . He had entered heart and soul

into the business connected with it from the very first , having filled in succession the offices of Secretary , Worshipful Master , and now- that of Treasurer . Bro . P . M . Simmonds likewise replied . In giving " The Officers" the W . M . expressed his thorough conviction that he had invested the proper brethren with the proper collars . His S . W . had devoted much time and

attention in perfecting himself in the several duties through which he had passed , and he could not say less in connection with his J . W . The Deacons were likewise thorough workers , and indeed the W . M . who could command the services of such a staff had good reason to be proud of the fact . He looked upon the officers as virtually responsible for thc well-being of a lodge , inasmuch as it

was indispensable that they should co-operate with the W . M . in all his duties . Bro . Ernest Smith , S . W ., mentioned that he had been privileged to share in the reply to this toast upon previous occasions , but hitherto from a much less exalted position than that in which he now found himself . In the past years New Cross Lodge had been most ably officered , and , although both

himself and colleagues were individually and collectively young Masons , he ventured to say that they would not be found wanting in their several duties during the ensuing twelve months . It was a matter of the greatest satisfaction to all present to see Bro . Theillay at the head of the lodge , and he wished him a prosperous year of office . Bro . Cowlev , I . W ., followed on , and , thanking the W . M .

for thc honour he had bestowed upon him , declared that his colleagues would leave no stone unturned to assist their chief in the well ruling and governing of the lodge . Personally he took an intense delight in all matters Masonical , and experience had proved that his confreres had ever done the same . "Thc Masonic Charities" and the Tyler ' s toast terminated the proceedings , and the remainder of thc evening was given over to harmony .

ST . DUNSTAN'S LODGE ( No . 1589 ) . —This lodge met for the dispatch of business on the 28 th ult ., at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street . Among those in attendance were Bros . J . H . Dodson , P . M . 55 , W . M . ; Turner , S . W . ; Woodbridge , J . W . ; Dwarber , P . M ., acting I . P . M . ; A . Tisley , Secretary ; G . Manners , S . D . ; Low , J . D . ; Clemow , D . C , acting I . G . ; Farrington , jun .,

Organist ; Partington , W . S . ; Wellsman , P . M . ; Gilbert , P . G . T . Middx ., Tyler . Thc visitors were Bros . W . H . White , 55 ; Gibbs , 1613 ; Goodyear , 1708 ; T . C . Walls , P . G . S . B . Middx ., Treasurer . Thc minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed , the W . M . raised Bros . Downer , Freeman , ar . d Edwards to the Degree of M . M . The ballot was then taken upon behalf

of Mr . H . G . Harris , and , it proving ' to be unanimous , that gentleman was duly initiated into Craft Mysteries . The election of W . M . for the ensuing year resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Turner . Bro . Praed was reelected Treasurer , and Bro . Gilbert re-appointed Tyler . The Aud . t Committee having been appointed , Bro . Dwarber , P . M ., moved , and Bro . Wellsman , P . M .,

seconded , " That the usual Past Master ' s jewel be voted to the outgoing Master , Bro . Dodson , in recognition of his valuable and efficient services to the lodge during his year of office . Thc resolution having been carried item , eon . the lodge was duly and formally closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet , which was excellently

served by the Bros . Clemow . Upon the removal of the cloth the customary Royal and Craft toasts were dulyproposed and heartily received . The " National Anthem " and " God bless thc Prince of Wales" having been sung , Bro . Dwarbcr , P . M ., proposed in very warm terms " The Health of the W . M . " This toast having been duly honoured , the W . M ., in reply , expressed himself as highly

gratified with the success that had attended the lodge during his year of office . There had been plenty of " work" to do , and he believed that every member of the lodge would agree with him that in every respect the affairs of the lodge had prospered most excellently . He could not , of course , claim for himself the entire credit for those agreeable results , but he had conscientiously

endeavoured to discharge the responsibilities of his position as far as in him lay , and he was vain enough to believe that in that endeavour he had been fairly successful . ( Hear . ) " The Initiate" followed , and in response to that pledge Bro . Harris made a speech which was characterised by its modesty . " The Health cf the Visitors" came next in order , and in acknowledgment Bro . Gibbs ,

Goodyear , and White mv ' . e exhaustive replies . In proposing " The Past Masters" the W . M . made some very flattering allusions to the three brethren constituting that important body . He was sure that the members all regretted the absence through illness of Bro . Dalwood , the I . P . M ., and he ( the W . M . ) was also sorry that Bro . Wellsman , P . M ., had been compelled to leave early in consequence

of the indisposition of some members of his family . In conclusion he expressed his thanks to the Past Masters for the valuable assistance and advice that they had given him upon all occasions . This toast having been received with excellent '' fire , " Bro . Dwarber , P . M ., briefly replied . " The W . M , elect" followed , and in response Bro . Turner made an able speech . " The Health of the

1 reasurer and Secretary" was proposed in very eulogistic language by the W . M ., and , in the absence of the Treasurer , Bro . Tisley replied in very witty terms . The toast of "The Officers" followed , and the Tyler ' s toast terminated thc proceedings , which were throughout greatly enhanced by the excellent instrumental and vocal contributions of Bros . Farrington , jun ., White , Harris , Tisliy , Dodson , and others .

ALDEBSGATE LODGE ( No . 16 57 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held at the Castle and Falcon Hotel , Aldersgate-street , on Monday , the 9 th inst ., and the brethren present , including \ isitors , num . bered over 100 , nearly all of whom were Installed Masters , Thc members of the lodge are few , and were nearly all present , and a large proportion of visitors attended in

response to invitations from the W . M . elect . The alteration of the date originally fixed for the R . M . B . I . festival from the Wednesday to Monday prevented a still larger number being present , but , as it was , the gathering was unprecedcntedly large .

M . for the ensuing year resulted unanimously in favour of Bro . Turner .
