the brethren adjourned to the banqueting room , where they sat down to an excellent banquet , supplied by Bros . Sayers and Marks , whose catering gave universal satisfaction . W . T . Nell responded , expressing his determination to do his utmost to enhance the success of the lodge . Thc Chairman gave " The Past Masters , " to which Bro . J Eberall responded . The Chairman gave " The Visitors . " His Worship the Mayor of Brighton , Bro . H . Davey , and Bros . E . E . Street and J . Curtis responded . The Chairman gave " The Masonic Charities . " Bros . J . H . Scott and J .

Eberall responded . The latter gave some very interesting particulars as to the great efforts made by the Freemasons of the Sussex district towards the furtherance of the great Masonic Charities . The Chairman next proposed " The Officers of the Lodge , " feeling satisfied they would do their Utmost to benefit the working of tbe lodge . Bros . A . J

Hawkes and W . H . Gibson responded . The Tyler ' s toast concluded the proceedings . During the evening the various toasts were' agreeably interspersed by glees and songs rendered b y Brjs . J . Large , E . Broadbridge , W . Roe , and G . Cole , the duties of accompanist being ably carried out by Bro . W . Roe . Bro . Kuhe also gave one of his masterly solos , and was warmly applauded .

INSTRUCTION . EMULATION LODGE OF IMPROVEMENT ( No . 256 ) . —A meeting was held on Friday , the 6 th inst ., at Freemasons' Hall . Present : Bros . F . R . Spaull , W . M . ; T . W . Ockenden , S . W . ; A . C . Spaull . J . W . ; W . Smallpeice , Sec . ; Hodinot , S . D . ; G . Drysdale , J . D . ; C . L . Kemp , I . G . ; Sadler , Tyler ; C A .

Murton , Preceptor ; T . Fenn , A . A . Richards , M . Gosset , A . Dawson , and about 20 other members . The lodge having been opened in the Three Degrees , was then resumed in the Second , and the ceremony of raising performed , Bro . A . Duret acting as candidate The lodge was called off for a few minutes . On resuming , the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed . Ballots were taken for several joining members ,

and declared unanimous in their favour . The W . M . having requested Bro . P . M . Gosset to take the S . W . ' s chair , and Bro . P . M . Dawson that of J . W ., the ceremony of installation was rehearsed by the W . M ., Bro . Duret again being the candidate . Bro . Ockenden was elected W . M . for the ensuing meeting , and gave notice that the work would be the First Ceremony and Second Lecture . The lodge was then closed in perfect harmony .

Woodward said that within a few weeks of seven years ago , the lodge was removed to Bro . Goodwin ' s , the Fox and Hounds Inn , where the brethren had spent many pleasant evenings , and had experienced from him on all occasions the greatest kindness

and attention . To meet Bro . Goodman ' s convenience , the lodge had been removed to the Crown Hotel , and it was felt that the least they could do would be to present him with some tangible expression of their goodwill and esteem . The lodge had , therefore , desired him to ask Bro . Goodman ' s acceptance of a mementoof their regard , in the form of an extract from the minutes , and he had much pleasure in

presenting it to Bro . Goodman . The testimonial consisted of an illuminated address , handsomely framed and glazed , containing the following inscription : — " Extract from the minutes of the East Surrey Lodge of Concord Lodge of Instruction , No . 463 , held at the Crown Hotel , Croydon , on Tuesday , the 13 th day of January , 1880 . John Goodman for his great liberality in providing a room for the lodge free of charge , and for his unvarying kindness and courtesy to the officers and brethren in attendance during the many years the lodge was held at his house , the Fox and Hounds , West Croydon . " It was proposed

by Bro . C . H . Woodward , seconded by Bro . Jno . Close , and carried unanimously , " Tbat an extract be taken from the minutes of the vote of thanks to Bro , Goodman , and that the same be engrossed on vellum , illuminated , and after having been signed by the W . M . on behalf of the lodge , and countersigned by the Hon . Secretary , be presented , suitably framed , to Bro . Goodman . Signed , C . H . Woodward , W . M . Herbert Saxelby , Hon . Sec . "

Bro . Goodman , in a few words , thanked the brethren for this handsome recognition , which he should ever preserve as a memento of the goodwill that existed between the lodge aud himself . Although it was with regret that his connection so far with the lodge had been severed he should still continue to take an interest in it , and he wished it every success . The business of the lodge was then proceeded with , and after some excellent working the lodge was closed in due form .

ST . JAMES'S CHAPTER ( No . 2 ) . —The meeting of this chapter took place last Thursday week at the Freemasons' Hall . Bro , Rowlands was exalted to the Supieme Degree , so to say , of Craft Masonry . A candidate was proposed as a joining member , and another for exaltation . The chairs were respectively filled by Comps . Brodie as Z ., Middleton as H ., and Woodford as J . The

election of officers for thc current year took place , when Comps . Middleton was elected Z ., Woodford H ., and Letchworth , J . Comp . Col . Creaton was unanimously re-elected , with thanks for his very valuable services , as the Treasurer , ana our old friend , Comp . Muggeridge , with the same as Ezra . Comps . Captain Davis was elected N . ; Hewitt , P . S . ; and Sampson Peirce , M . of C . The companions

afterwards adjourned to a " social gathering , " which was alike festive and profitable , genial and fraternal . The companions separated at an early hour . Among those present were Past Principals Wood , Sampson Peirce , Col . Creaton , Major Molyneux ; the three Principals , Comps . Brodie , Middleton , and Woodford ; Comps . Letchworth , N . ; Captain Davis , P . S . ; Hewctt and Romen , A . S . ; Batley , P . Z . ; Shirley , and Fort .

PANMURE CHAPTER ( No . 720 ) . —A regular meeting of this chapter was held at the Horns Tavern , Kennington , on Monday , the gth inst ., for the election of officers for the ensuing year . In the unavoidable absence of the M . E . Z ., Comp . M . S . Lardham , the chair of Z . was occupied by Ex . Comp . Henry Smith , P . Z . The

candidates for exaltation being unable to attend on this occasion , the time at disposal ' of the chapter was utilised by discussion of sundry business relating to its affairs . The election of officers resulted as follows , viz .: Ex . Comp . T . Poore , M . E . Z ; Ex . Comp . R . N . Field , H . ; Comp . Samuel Poynter , J . ; Ex . Comp . James Stevens , P . some routine business had been disposed of the chapter was closed and the companions supped together . We arc . requested to state that the installation of Principals wiii take place on the 10 th May , when the duties of Installing Prindipal will be undertaken by Ex . Comp ., James Stevens , P . Z ., founder and Scribe E . of the chapter .

LIVERPOOL . —Chapter of Friendship ( No . 241 ) . —The annual meeting of this chapter was held on the 26 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , 22 , Hope-street , for the purpose of installation of chiefs and investiture of officers . The chapter was opened at five p . m . by Comps . James Winsor , M . E . Z . ; J . Newell , H . ; and Dr . A . Samuels , J . The minutes of the last convocation were

read and confirmed , and Dr . S . ** J . McGeorge , P . M . E . Z ., proceeded to instal Comp . J . JNewell ( ex-Mayor ot Bootle ) , as M . E . Z ., and " *^ Dr . A . Samuel , H ., for the ensuing year . Comp . A . J . Henochsberg , J . elect , being unavoidably absent in consequence of a severe indisposition . The manner in which Comp . McGeorge rendered the beautiful ritual , in which he was

ably assisted by Comp . Ralph Robinson , P . M . E . Z ., P . G . S . N ., was such as to elicit the praises of the P . Z . ' s , and all present congratulated Comp . McGeorge on his efficiency . Amongst those present were Comps . T . K . Hughes , P . Z ., Tresis . ; J . Lunt , P . Z . ; McArthur ( Mayor of Bootle ) , P . Z . 1086 ; and Thos . Roberts , P . Z . 6 73 . The ceremony of installation being completed , the companions were

then admitted , when several brethren were balloted for , and Bro . Copland , being present , was exalted to the Sublime Degree in thc same admirable manner that has marked Comp . Winsor's year of office in this chapter . The M . E . Z . then invested the following companions : Comps . Dr . Hill , Scribe E . ; Thos . Salter , Scribe N . ; J . Roman , P . S ; after which he presented to Comp . Winsor , the

I . P . Z ., in the name of the chapter , with a magnificent jewel , also a suit of Past Principal ' s clothing , in appreciation of the zeal and ability with which he had fulfilled the respective positions in this chapter , and he requested the companions present to endeavour to emulate Bro . Winsor in their career in the chapter . Bro . Winsor replied in suitable terms , and assured the companions it

would always be his study in the future , as it had in the past , to do all in his power to conduce to the welfare of the companions in general , and more especially of the Chapter of Friendship . The chapter was then closed in solemn form , and the companions adjourned to the old lodge room , where they partook of an excellent supper , which was served ia first-class style by Bro . Chaplin , the Honse Steward , and

after full justice had been done to all the good things , the tables were cleared , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were rendered and received in the most enthusiastic manner . The toast of the evening , " The M . E . Z ., Comp . Newell , " was proposed by the I . P . Z ., who in very flattering terms referred to the excellent manner in which the M . E . Z . had filled the preceding chair , and he had no doubt that under his care Chapter 241 would continue to

flourish , and retain its well-won reputation . " The Visitors " was proposed by the M . E . Z ., and Comps . McArthur , P . Z ., and Hugh Williams , P . Z ., responded . Comps . Thos . Hatton , Dr . Hill , D . Gabrielsen , J . Longbottom , and J . Brotherton enhanced the enjoyment by their musical efforts , which were highly appreciated by the companions . The last toast being proposed , thc companions separated in good time .

PRINCE LEOPOLD LODGE ( No . 238 ) . — An emergency meeting of this new but fairly prosperous lodge was held at Anderton's Hotel , Fleet-street , on the 6 th inst . Among those present were Bros . W . Wigginton , P . M . 181 , P . G . S . of Works and P . P . G . S . of Works Middlesex and Surrey , W . M . ; T . C Walls , S . W . ; Alfred

Tisley , J . W . ; Richnell , J . O . ; Webb , J . D . ; Beningfield , I . G . ; Gilbert , P . G . T . Middlesex , acting Tyler . The ballot was taken on behalf of Bros . F . Farrington , D . C 1589 ; W . E . Farrington , 1589 ; C . G . Brown , 158 9 ; R . Skelton , 158 9 ; and H . J . Leah , 193 ; and it proving to be unanimous in each case , the first four named candidates were impressively advanced to the Degree ot

M . M . M . Apologies for non-attendance having been read from several of the members , the lodge was duly and formally closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent collation . It being only an emergency meeting the toasts were necessarily limited . They comprised "The Queen and Mark Masonry ; " " The G . M ., D . M ., and the rest o £ the G . O . 's . ; " The R . W . P . G . M . of Middx . and Surrey ; »

" The W . M . ; " " The Advancees ; " and " The Officers . " In proposing thc latter toast thc W . M . expressed his very great regret that Bro . Charles Horsley , who held the dual offices of Treasurer and Master Overseer , had been compelled through severe indisposition from attending that

evening . In conclusion he expressed a fervent hope , and which feeling he felt sure would be heartily shared by every member of the Prince Leopold Lodge , that their esteemed brother would be sufficiently convalescent to attend their next regular meeting . The Tyler ' s toast then terminated the proceedings .

We note that our well known and much esteemed Bro . Edward Clarke is among the candidates for the vacant seat of Southwark . He is , it appears , the Conservative candidate . It is intended to give a grand ball in the Exhibition Palace at Dublin during Easter week to the Duke and Duchess of Connaught .

Woodward said that within a few weeks of seven years ago , the lodge was removed to Bro . Goodwin ' s , the Fox and Hounds Inn , where the brethren had spent many pleasant evenings , and had experienced from him on all occasions the greatest kindness

and attention . To meet Bro . Goodman ' s convenience , the lodge had been removed to the Crown Hotel , and it was felt that the least they could do would be to present him with some tangible expression of their goodwill and esteem . The lodge had , therefore , desired him to ask Bro . Goodman ' s acceptance of a mementoof their regard , in the form of an extract from the minutes , and he had much pleasure in

presenting it to Bro . Goodman . Bro . Goodman , in a few words , thanked the brethren for this handsome recognition , which he should ever preserve as a memento of the goodwill that existed between the lodge aud himself . Although it was with regret that his connection so far with the lodge had been severed he should still continue to take an interest in it , and he wished it every success . The business of the lodge was then proceeded with , and after some excellent working the lodge was closed in due form .

ST . JAMES'S CHAPTER ( No . 2 ) . —The meeting of this chapter took place last Thursday week at the Freemasons' Hall . Bro , Rowlands was exalted to the Supieme Degree , so to say , of Craft Masonry . A candidate was proposed as a joining member , and another for exaltation . The chairs were respectively filled by Comps . Brodie as Z ., Middleton as H ., and Woodford as J . The

election of officers for thc current year took place , when Comps . Middleton was elected Z ., Woodford H ., and Letchworth , J . Comp . Col . Creaton was unanimously re-elected , with thanks for his very valuable services , as the Treasurer , ana our old friend , Comp . Muggeridge , with the same as Ezra . Comps . Captain Davis was elected N . ; Hewitt , P . S . ; and Sampson Peirce , M . of C . The companions

afterwards adjourned to a " social gathering , " which was alike festive and profitable , genial and fraternal . The companions separated at an early hour . candidates for exaltation being unable to attend on this occasion , the time at disposal ' of the chapter was utilised by discussion of sundry business relating to its affairs . LIVERPOOL . —Chapter of Friendship ( No . 241 ) . —The annual meeting of this chapter was held on the 26 th ult ., at the Masonic Hall , 22 , Hope-street , for the purpose of installation of chiefs and investiture of officers . The chapter was opened at five p . m . by Comps . James Winsor , M . E . Z . ; J . Newell , H . ; and Dr . A . Samuels , J . The minutes of the last convocation were

read and confirmed , and Dr . S . ** J . McGeorge , P . M . E . Z ., proceeded to instal Comp . J . JNewell ( ex-Mayor ot Bootle ) , as M . E . Z ., and " *^ Dr . A . Samuel , H ., for the ensuing year . Comp . A . J . Henochsberg , J . elect , being unavoidably absent in consequence of a severe indisposition . The manner in which Comp . McGeorge rendered the beautiful ritual , in which he was

ably assisted by Comp . Ralph Robinson , P . M . E . Z ., P . G . S . N ., was such as to elicit the praises of the P . Z . ' s , and all present congratulated Comp . McGeorge on his efficiency . Amongst those present were Comps . T . K . Hughes , P . Z ., Tresis . ; J . Lunt , P . Z . ; McArthur ( Mayor of Bootle ) , P . Z . 1086 ; and Thos . Roberts , P . Z . 6 73 . The ceremony of installation being completed , the companions were

then admitted , when several brethren were balloted for , and Bro . Copland , being present , was exalted to the Sublime Degree in thc same admirable manner that has marked Comp . S ; after which he presented to Comp . Winsor , the

I . P . Z ., in the name of the chapter , with a magnificent jewel , also a suit of Past Principal ' s clothing , in appreciation of the zeal and ability with which he had fulfilled the respective positions in this chapter , and he requested the companions present to endeavour to emulate Bro . Winsor in their career in the chapter . Bro . Winsor replied in suitable terms , and assured the companions it

would always be his study in the future , as it had in the past , to do all in his power to conduce to the welfare of the companions in general , and more especially of the Chapter of Friendship . The chapter was then closed in solemn form , and the companions adjourned to the old lodge room , where they partook of an excellent supper , which was served ia first-class style by Bro . Chaplin , the Honse Steward , and

after full justice had been done to all the good things , the tables were cleared , and the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were rendered and received in the most enthusiastic manner . The toast of the evening , " The M . E . Z ., Comp . Newell , " was proposed by the I . P . Z ., who in very flattering terms referred to the excellent manner in which the M . E . Z . had filled the preceding chair , and he had no doubt that under his care Chapter 241 would continue to

flourish , and retain its well-won reputation . " The Visitors " was proposed by the M . E . Z ., and Comps . McArthur , P . Z ., and Hugh Williams , P . Z ., responded . Comps . Thos . Hatton , Dr . Hill , D . Gabrielsen , J . Longbottom , and J . Brotherton enhanced the enjoyment by their musical efforts , which were highly appreciated by the companions . The last toast being proposed , thc companions separated in good time .

M . M . M . Apologies for non-attendance having been read from several of the members , the lodge was duly and formally closed , and the brethren adjourned to an excellent collation . evening . In conclusion he expressed a fervent hope , and which feeling he felt sure would be heartily shared by every member of the Prince Leopold Lodge , that their esteemed brother would be sufficiently convalescent to attend their next regular meeting . The Tyler ' s toast then terminated the proceedings .

We note that our well known and much esteemed Bro . Edward Clarke is among the candidates for the vacant seat of Southwark . He is , it appears , the Conservative candidate . It is intended to give a grand ball in the Exhibition Palace at Dublin during Easter week to the Duke and Duchess of Connaught .
