The Quarterly Court of Subscribers to this Institution was held on Thursday last in the large hall of Freemasons' Tavern , Bro . Henry Smith , Past Grand Deacon , Deputy Prov . Grand Master . for West Yorkshire , Treasurer of the Institution , presiding . He was supported on the dais by Bros . H . A . Hunt , Peter de Lande Long , J . H : Matthews , A . C . Spaull , and C . E .

Keyser . The business : before the Court was merely formal , and consisted of . the reading and confirmation of the minutes of the July Court , the reading of summaries of the minutes of the several subsequent General Committees for information , and the election of Scrutineers : of votes . - ' Among the portions of business which required confirmation was the voting of ^ 600 for structural

alterations in the infirmary of the School which , according to the designs of Bro . H . A . Hunt , P . G . Superintendent of Works , by introducing a separate staircase will comp letely isolate infectious from non-infectious cases . The business of the Court having been transacted , the election ' of 1 . 5 out of an approved list of 37 candidates for admission to the School was proceeded with . The minutes of the previous Committee having been read and verified , the SECRETARY reported the deaths of three male annuitants , and of Bro . Frederick Burgess , P . G . Stwd ., Vice-Patron , who , by his will , has bequeathed one-third of the residue of his estate to the Institution in the event of his daughter dying without issue . He also reported that a widow who had applied

for half her husband's annuity had been unable to produce her marriage certificate , and , therefore , that the money had not been paid . The Warden ' s report for the past month was read , and also that of the Finance Committee , which was

adopted , and ordered to be entered on the minutes . The Committee then took into their consideration tlie petitions of four candidates ( three male and one widow ) , with the result that one of the male petitions was rejected , and the remaining three accepted . A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the proceedings .

The Midland Railway has undoubtedly been the pioneer of many of the improvements that have of late years contributed so largely to the comfort of the travelling public , and their latest advance in this direction should be welcomed especially by those who , while precluded from travelling luxuriously , are

nevertheless not insensible to the creature comforts being obtainable with all the agreeable surroundings of their Wore wealth y fellow travellers . That a great railway "ke the Midland should place such facilities within the reach of third-class travellers would scarcely have been credited by the most ardent advocate of better accommodation even 10 years ago . We have little doubt of e success of this experiment , winch will be almost crtain to lead to further improvements in the same dlr Wtion .
