H . left the hall , and on departing was loudly cheered by many persons who had assembled at the grand entrance . The visiting brethren were invited by their brothers of Friendship Lodge to join them at a collation at the Crown and Anchor Hotel later
in the evening . The invitation was very generally accepted , and splendid provision made for them b y Bro . J . Franklin , P . M . Of course all the loyal and Masonic toasts were duly proposed and honoured , and throughout the proceedings were most hearty and enjoyable . The thanks of the lodge are due to Bros . Major Dods , R . Martin , J . VV . Johnson , J . Etheridge , O . Diver , E . 1 .
Bonfellow , and C . L . Chipperfield , who assisted the officers in their various duties and in carrying out the arrangements for the day , to Bro . Pyemont for his excellent rendering of the musical portion of the ceremony , and to Bro . Bond , P . M ., for the efficient manner in which his secretarial duties were carried out . In consequence of the admirable
arrangements made for carrying out the ceremony , the Prov . G . M . has since informed the brethren that the next Provincial Grand Lodge will be held at Yarmouth at an early date . We may add that Bro . French , W . M . 100 , went through the whole of the Degree quite unassisted , including the working tools and tracing board , the latter of which our Royal brother appeared to be particularly interested in .

Wolstencroft , of the King's Friends' Lodge , Nantwich , and was pronounced favourable . The ballot
was taken for Mr . Wm . Rennie to become a member of the Craft , and was unanimous in his favour . At the request of the W . M ., Bro . John R . Lever , P . M ., took the chair , and initiated Mr . Rennie into Freemasonry . Prior to the lodge being closed , the VV . M . referred in feeling terms to the recent untimely death of Bro . Charles Victor Anger , who died , after a very short illness , on the 2 nd inst . from
congestion of the brain . Bro . Anger , who was only 33 years of age , had been a member of the lodge about iS month ? , and had by his genial , kindly disposition , his extreme unselfishness , and ready willingness to serve others endeared himself to all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance . His loss is deeply deplored by his late employers—Bros Edwards , Cunliffe , and Wilson—to whom he was not only
a valued servant , but a faithful friend . Another lamented and sudden visitation from death had fallen upon Bro . Bradshaw , one of the oldest members of the lodge , who was buried in Brooklands Cemetery on the previous Saturday . In consequence of these two sad occurrences , there was no social board , and the brethren separated at an early hour .

tools being presented and explained by the J . VV . Bro . Thomas Harrison having answered the test questions , and being entrusted , retired . A candidate was announced and passed to the Degree of F . C , hy Bco . W . H . Jessop , P . M ., who very efficiently rendered the ceremony , as also did the S . W . in presenting and explaining the working tools . Bros . Dalton and Swallow answered the test questions ,
were entrusted and retired , when the two ceremonies of raising were undertaken by the W . M ., and Bro . Joseph Varley , P . M . The exhortation and tracing board were given and explained by Bro . Varley in a very impressive and masterly manner . Two gentlemen were proposed for initiation , and "Hearty good wishes" were given and
received . Lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banquet room , and partook of an excellent supper , after which the usual toasts were given and responded to . The evening was much enlivened by excellent music , rendered by the members and visitors .
CHESHUNT . —Gresham Lodge ( No . 869 ) . — The first meeting of the season of this lodge was held at the Cheshunt Great House on Saturday , the 9 th inst ., undar the presidency of Bro . Thomas S . Holland , P . G . P . Herts , the W . M . ; Bro . Henry Hughes , S . W . ; and Bro . Rev . Charles Erskine Mayo , M . A ., P . G . Chap ., J . VV . ; and

stick , P . M . and Treas ., gave the lecture on the first lodge hoard . The ballot was then taken for W . M . and Treasurer For the ensuing year , and resulted in the unanimous election 3 f Bro . Henry Hughes , the S . W ., as VV . M ., and Bro . F . D . R . Copestick , P . M ., as Treasurer . A P . M . ' s jewel was unanimously voted to the retiring W . M ., and a vote of thanks recorded to Bro . Mayo , J . W ., for representing the lodge at the late Festival of the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institution with a list of subscriptions amounting to £ 85 .
Bro . G . S . Bigley , P . M ., D . C , who had on many occasions presented a variety of useful and valuable articles , both for use in the lodge and at the banquet table , presented four very handsome electro-plated cruets , wrought in the form of a trowel , and engraved with the emblems of the Order and the name and number of the lodge , which were accepted with many expressions of thanks and appreciation of the very great interest Bro . Bigley had always taken in promoting the prosperity of the lodge and the comfort of the brethren .
The lodge was then closed , and the brethren adjourned to the banqueting hall , where an excellent repast was provided , the glow from the yule logs that crackled and blazed in the old-fashioned open grate as of yore , throwing its cheerful warmth and light on all around , and making the old armour and time-worn standards look quite gay with the dancing light that was shed around . Here , amid cheerful chat and friendly challenges , the evening passed
merrily away . After the usual toasts had been duly honoured , Bro . Gompertz , P . M . and Sec , reminded the brethren it was just ten years since they first , by the kind indulgence of Bro . Mayo , came to meet within the ancient old hall now known as the home of the Gresham Lodge , there was at first some apprehension as to obtaining the cteature comforts , being so far from any other house , when it
occurred to him that the hall keeper , who was a Constable stationed in the neighbourhood , and with his family lived in the Old House , would probably with some little additions to his culinary appliances be able to provide for the necessary comforts of the brethren . On being interviewed he readily assented to do his best for them ; how far he had done that the brethren could best testify . After due enquiry into his antecedents he was in June , 1 S 7 G , initiated
as a serving brother , and the way he has since conducted himself and performed the duties with which he was charged , has fully justified their partiality in admitting him into our Order , and the brethren will be pleased to hear from an extract he had taken from a local paper , that Bro . Mitchell ' s career had been both eventful and creditable , and he thought the brethren had every reason to be proud of him , he then read the following extract : — " Retirement
of an old officer . It has been officially announced that , after a service of 22 years in Cheshunt as a police officer , acting Sergeant Mitchell has been pensioned on the sum of £ 55 9 s . 4 d . per annum . Sergeant Mitchell entered the Metropolitan Police in . February , 1 S 61 , having therefore , 24 years and two months service . Previous to entering the police , Sergeant Mitchell served 12 years in the army , seeing much service . After two years service in Canada
he went to the Crimea , where he was present at the battles of the Alma , Balaclava , Inkerman , and Sebastopol , receiving the war medal and four clasps ; and at the conclusion of that war , after a brief period of home service , on the outbreak of the Indian mutiny , he proceeded there and served throughout the campaign , receiving the war medal and the clasp for the relief of Lucknow . Mr . Mitchell , who was an active an able officer , will take with him into his
retirement the best wishes of all with whom he was connected . " It need scarcely be added , Bro . Gompertz said , that the brethren thoroughly endorsed the last sentiments of his friends , and hoped he might be spared for many years to injoy his well merited retirement . Some kindly allusions were made b y other brethren to Bro . Mitchell's wife and family , and his health was drank with musical honours . The Tyler ' s toast brought to a close a very pleasant evening .

Crane , P . M . 975 ; H . Newson , 305 ; J . Taylor , 313 ; R . M . Hewett , 1671 ; James E . Teasdel , 1631 ; and others . After the ceremony H . R . H . left the hall , and on departing was loudly cheered by many persons who had assembled at the grand entrance .
M . 100 , went through the whole of the Degree quite unassisted , including the working tools and tracing board , the latter of which our Royal brother appeared to be particularly interested in .

was taken for Mr .

Carter , with a Past Master ' s gold jewel , which , he said , was a mark of the respect and esteem in which he ( Bro . Carter ) was held by the brethren . The Secretary , Bro . J . Halden , explained to the visitors that it was not a custom to present Past Master's jewels to their retiring W . Ms ., but that day being the twenty-firstljanniversary of the lodge ' s existence , it was felt that some special feature should mark the event , and therefore the brethren had
