M . referred to the deserved popularity ot Bro . G . G . Symons , P . M ., Treasurer , who had done good work for them for over 20 years . He sympathetically referred to the absence of Bro . W . Briggs , Sec , whose telegram from Spain showed his heart was with them . The work of Bro . T . I . Burgess , Sec , was known to all .

Waverley Lodge , No . 1322 . The 2 Gth installation meeting was held on Thursday , the 29 th ult ., at the Queen's Arms Hotel , Ashton-under-Lyne , and there were present the largest number of brethren ever seen in the lodge . Immediately after the time appointed , Bro . J . M . Jones , P . M ., acting VV . M ., opened the lodge , when the minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed , after which Bro . Wright Wood , P . M ., presented Bro . Samuel Grundy , S . VV ., who had been unanimously appointed the VV . M . elect , to receive the benefit of

M . invested Bro . W . Rawlinson as the I . P . M ., and explained his jewel to him . He also performed the whole ofthe ceremony of investiture with respect to all the other officers , explaining fully the duties to each of them in a most able and impressive style . The following officers were appointed and invested : Bros . M . Newman , S . VV . ; A .

Cooper , J . W . ; W . Newton , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., Treas . ; VV . Eastwood , P . P . G . S ., Sec ; VV . Newton , P . M ., P . P . J . G . D ., D . C . j J . M . Jones , P . M ., A . D . J . Smith gave the concluding prayer , and the installation ceremony was brought to a close .

After all business had been disposed of , and "Hearty good wishes had been expressed by the large number of visiting brethren for the new W . M ., the lodge was closed . Subsequently an excellent banquet was served , presided over by Bro . S . Grundy ,

W . M . The loyal and other Masonic toasts were drunk most heartily . A delightful entertainment had been provided . Bro . John Drousfield recited in his inimitable manner several sketches in Lancashire dialect from the works of Edwin Waugh and Ben Brierley , which created much amusement . Bros . J . Scholield , T . Ogden , H . Green , and A . Cooper abl y contributed the vocal portion of the entertainment , assisted by Bro . E . Andrew at the piano .

Bro . W . Rawlinson proposed the toast of the evening— " The Newly-made W . M . —in a very neat speech , and spoke in high praise of the manner in which the W . M . had performed the whole of his duties in the lodge . He stated that the brethren felt proud they had that day placed Bro . Grundy in the high position he then occupied , and predicted a successful year of office both for him and the lodge . These remarks were received with manifest approbation . The song " Here's to his health " was excellently rendered by Bro . Green , the

chorus at the finish of the last verse being repeated several times . After another song from Bro . Ogden , Bio . Samuel Grundy , W . M ., who was received with vociferous applause , responded , and thanked Bro . Rawlinson for his felicitous remarks , and the brethren for the hearty response they had given to the toast of his health . He was aware the position of W . M . carried with it its duties and responsibilities , which he assured them he would not shirk , and relying , as he felt sure he could , on the hearty co-operation and assistance of all the brethren of " Waverley , " and particularly of the officers , he would do his best to

maintain , if not increase , its prestige as a lodge for efliciency in working , and sincerely hoped that when he occupied the chair he should do so with honour to the lodge and to himself , and that it might be truly said that among the many happy and prosperous years Waverley Lodge had seen , the ensuing year might not be reckoned as the least of them . The speech was happily given , and was warmly applauded . Bro . Grundy proposed *¦ The Health of the LP . M . and Installing Master , " and

said he felt sure he expressed the unanimous wish of all the brethren to see the former uftener amongst them ( he being at Grimsby ) , and as to the latter , their work might be equalled , but few would excel it , and so long as the lodge had oflicers of such undoubted ability its reputation would be maintained . Bro . Jones , in reply , referred to the junior brethren having ( in the transference of

the W . M . from the position of S . W . ) lost their "Captain , " and said that the VV . M . had that day been appointed "Commander-in-Chief" of the whole of the lodge . The toast of "The Provincial Grand Officers" and "Visiting Brethren" were given and responded to , and the proceedings were brought to a close . It should be mentioned that the floor of the room was covered entirely with a new , beautiful Brussels carpet of Masonic design , and the lodge room looked superb .

It was the unanimous opinion of the brethren this was par excellence the most successful gathering the Waverley Lodge had ever seen . The following were present at the opening of the lodge , viz . : Bros . W . Rawlinson , W M . ; Samuel Grundy , S . W . ; VV . Newman , J . W . ; Walter Newton , P . M ., P . P . J . G . The fodge was opened , and after the confirmation of the minutes several candidates

were advanced in each of the Degrees , the ancient charge being delivered after the initiation ceremony . It was unanimously agreed to hold a second ball in connection with the lodge , the fixture last year proving such an unqualified success . A vote of sympathy was passed to Bro . Rudderforth , Stwd ., in his illness , and hearty wishes expressed for his speedy recovery . The lodge was closed and a choice banquet followed , which was served in the excellent style for which the restaurant is noted .

The usual toasts followed , including that of "The Grand Officers . " Bro . W . H . Bailey , G . Treas ., in reply , expressed his pride at being called upon to respond , for during his Mastership of the Fellowshi p Lodge he had the honour to be unanimously elected Grand Treasurer . He agreed with the VV . M . that the Grand Officers deserved the highest commendation , for their hearts were in their work , and the result was to be seen in the position Masonry occupied . It should at all times be a matter of quality and not quantity , for they were desirous of welcoming none but those

who would be an honour to the Craft , and he trusted that would always be their motto . He then proposed a toast specially dear to this lodge— "The Worshipful Master . " They had witnessed with gratification the excellent working of Bro . Roberts , W . M ., who undertook a very heavy task , but had perfornud it to the satisfaction of the members . He trusted the W . M . would continue his successful year and bs supported by the lodge , which was steadily growing , not onl y in the number of members , but in its Charitable expenditure . It was the W . M . ' s wish to represent the lodge for the Benevolent

Institution , so wisely and gracefully ruled by Bro . Terry , and he ( Bro . Bailey ) wjuld guarantee that 25 guineas should be voted from the lodge funds . There were few lodges that had done so much as that lodge for the Charitable Institutions . They did not boast of it , but looked back with pleasure on the fact that they could show a record which proved they were anxious to carry on the work of the Charities . They all wished the W . M . success , health , and happiness whilst he continued to rule over that flourishing lodge .

Bro . J . R . Roberts , P . M ., VV . M ., thanked the I . P . M . for his flattering remirks , and the brethren for the very gracious manner in which it was received . He found that after he had rendered two ceremonies that evening he began to flag , and the Three Degrees were , in fact , a little too much , so that he should probably ask a Past Master next time to perform one of the ceremonies . He felt it his bounden duty to give the charge after the initiation , as he thought every Master should do . If he had given them satisfaction it all he

was had endeavoured to do , and should continue to do so as long as he was their W . M . He had a difficult and up-hill task to satisfy a large lodge like that , and following a distinguished brother like the Grand Treasurer was no easy matter . His heart was in the work , and he would do all he could for the best interests of the lodge . " The Initiate " was next honoured , and suitably responded to .

Bro . J . 'lerry , P . G . S . B ., Sec . R . M . B . L , responded for" l ' he Masonic Charities , " and the brethren spontaneously subscribed a sum of / . ' 173 towards the W . M . ' s list for the Benevolent Institution . This amount included sums of 10 guineas from the W . M . anil Bros . Bailey , Welford , Terry , and J . Stephens . Other toasts , including " The Visitors , " were given before the Tyler ' s toast closed the meeting . Bro . Rubinstein , Org ., presided with his usual ability over the musicil irrangemjnts , and was as-. isted by Bios . Batho , Miles , and C Ortner .

Bro .

Comments were made on the paper by Bros . Gould , Rylands , Klein , Macbean , and

Speth , and a hearty vote of thanks passed to the lecturer . An illuminated certificate and vote of thanks to the retiring W . M . was then presented to him , together with the Past Master's jewel of the lodge , and Bro . Macbean suitably replied . M . at Sandringham , whose gracious reply unfortunately arrived after the proceedings had broken up .
