bringing in the largest number of brethren , all of whom had proved themselves good workers and good Masons j moreover , he had filled every office in the Iodge , and had done so with ability and credit . The I . P . M ., Bro . Godfrey , having seconded the proposition , and made a few appropriate remarks , it vvas put to the vote , and carried

The brethren , to the number of 50 , then adjourned for re freshment , when the usual toasts were proposed and responded to . LEEDS .
Prudence Lodge ( No . 2069 ) . —On Saturday , the Sth instant , there was a very large and influential gathering of brethren resident in Leeds and the more distant portions of the Province of West Yorkshire to witness and take part in the installation proceedings of this popular and successful lodge . The meeting was held in the Masonic
HaH , Great George-street , and upwards of 70 brethren , including four Grand Officers , testified their interest in the event by their presence . Among the many brethren who supported the W . M ., Bro . Chas . Middleton , at the opening of the lodge were Bros . Henry Smith , D . P . G . M ., Past G . Deacon of England ; W . F . Smithson , P . M ., G . Deacon of England , and Chairman of the Charity Committee of

Chap ., 1211 ; Tomlinson , 1221 ; and in the unavoidable absence of the VV . M . of Zetland Lodge he was represented by Bro . Clayton , S . W . and W . M . elect . There was a numerous
gathering of Leeds Past Masters , whilst Bros . Auty , W . M . 2 3 21 , and Last , Sec . 2321 , represented the Bradford bretbren . Every officer of Prudence Lodge was in his place , and there vvas a large assembly of the brethren of that lodge , indeed the gathering was in all respects a most brilliant and successful one .
The distinguished visitors having been saluted according to ancient custom , and the minutes of the past meeting having been adopted , Bro . Trevor , P . M ., D . C , presented Bro . 1 < retwell for the benefit of installation , remarking that as Bro . Fretwell's old and close friend , and as the one who introduced him into Masonry , he esteemed it a privilege to have been asked to perform that pleasant duty . Bro .
Fretwell had passed through the various offices of the lodge , and vvas the first initiate to be presented for installation , the brethren having ratified that choice by their unanimous vote . The ceremony was then proceeded with , and was taken part in by Bros . Dr . Smyth , Middleton , Mason , 'Trevor , and Dimery . The difficult though most interesting part of the ceremony allotted to Bro . Dr . Smyth was splendidly
performed , and was a revelation to those visiting brethren who had not previously had the privilege of hearing our venerable and distinguished brother go through the ritual . The brethren having been admitted to the lodge , the ceremony was completed in a manner which gave the keenest enjoyment to all who were privileged to take part in it , and redounded to the credit of the lodge , which is fortunate to
possess such a brilliant and distinguished body of Past Masters . The W . M ., Bro . Fretwell , then invested his officers as follows : Bros . Middleton , I . P . M . ; Tom Atkinson , S . W . ; Robert Abbott , J . W . ; C . L . Mason , Mason , P . M ., P . P . G . Treas ., Treas . ; Arthur Butterworth , Secretary ; B . Sykes Bailey , S . D . ; R . Alfred Smithson , J . H . Begbie Abbott , I . G . ; J . Ihornton Jones and Edward Ellis , Stewards ; James Buckley , Org . ; and S . Barrand , Tyler . The W . M . addressed a few suitable words of congratulation to each of his officers , and at the conclusion of this pleasing duty said that he felt it due to the lodge that his first official duty should be to thank his brethren once more for the proud and honourable position in which they
had unanimously placed him . ihey had conferred upon him the highest horiour it vvas in their power to give , and there vvas no more honourable position in Masonry than for a brother to be VV . M . of his mother lodge . Their great confidence and their continued affection demanded great things from him . Though he might fall short of his own ideal , he was sure they would always give him credit for a sincere
attachment to that Iodge , and an earnest desire to promote its welfare . Peace and harmony reigned in that lodge ; it vvas one of their distinguishing characteristics , and ha hoped , nay , he vvas sure , it would be maintained . He felt like the captain of a goodly craft that was wafted from the harbour by a favouring breeze ; might it please the G . A . O . T . U . to
permit him to bring it safely to port after a prosperous and a happy voyage . Bro . Watson , P . M ., P . P . G . S . of W ., after live years' service as Charity representative of the lodge on the Provincial Committee , resigned . An honourable and successful record for Charity has been made , thanks to Bro . Watson ' s persistent efforts , and a most cordial vote of thanks was presented to that brother for his
Provincial Meetings.
brilliant services . In his stead Bro . Tudor Trevor vvas unanimously elected . The two Wardens were selected to represent the Iodge upon the Local Charity ( Almoner ' s Fund ) , the W . M . being joint Auditor with Bro . Rickard , P . M . 304 . Bro . Fretwell then , on behalf of the lodge , presented to the I . P . M . a handsome Past Master ' s jewel in recognition of the efficient manner in which he had
discharged his duties during his year of office . In making the presentation the W . M . bore cordial testimony to the urbanity and the kindness of heart which had characterised Bro . Middleton in all his dealings , and assured him that on vacating the chair he possessed the sincere affection of every member of the lodge . He would wear the jewel near his heart , and that would remind him that his happiness and
prosperity were very near the hearts of his brethren . Bro . Middleton , in reply , bore eloquent testimony to the assistance he had received from his Past Masters and officers , and said that not one unpleasant word had been used . He reciprocated from his heart the affectionate feelings which the brethren entertained towards him . The remainder of the business having been transacted , Bro . Henry Smith ,
D . P . G . M ., addressed a few words of congratulation to the brethren , and complimented the newly-appointed officers on the manner in which they had performed their duties . " Hearty good wishes " were exchanged , and the proceedings in the lodge were brought to a close . Letters of regret at absence and congratulation for the VV . M . were read from Bros . Scott Young , P . M ., Prov . G .
Std . Br . West Lanes , ( an old member of the lodge ) ; Webster , Lucas , Robert Craig , P . M ., P . P . G . D . ( whose absence owing to ill-health vvas sympathetically alluded to by the W . M . and other brethren ); Townsend , P . M ., P . P . G . Org . j and others . The P . G . M ., Bro . T . W . Tew , J . P ., wrote , stating that , owing to an attack of asthma , he had
been forbidden by his medical adviser to be out in the evening . Deep sympathy vvas expressed for the popular ruler , who is beloved by every lodge in his large province . An adjournment was made to the banqueting room , where , under the presidency of Bro . Fretwell , a well-served repast , provided by the Tyler , Bro . Barrand , vvas partaken of .
The loyal toasts having received hearty recognition , the W . M . proposed "The Grand Master and the Grand Lodge , " to which Bro . Dr . Smyth responded . In the course of a pointed and eloquent address he expressed pleasure at so many of his clerical brethren joining the Order . It vvas many years ago that he became a member of the Craft , and
in those days it was considered a shame for a clergyman to be a brother . No doubt in those days objectionable incidents were noticed in some lodges , but that could no longer be said in the present day , and the clergy by joining the Order did incalculable good . The Order was flourishing in a most wonderful manner , and it would continue to do so more and more .
Bro . T revor gave I he Provincial Grand Master , and the rest of the Prov . Grand Officers , Present and Past , " and bore earnest tribute to the wisdom which marked the rulers of the Craft in that province . Bro . Tew stood prominent in the Craft as one of the most cultured and industrious Masons in the country . They were very proud of him , and prayed that the G . A . O . T . U . might spare him
for many years to rule over the province which loved him so well . He also spoke in eloquent praise of the D . P . G . M . and other members of Prov . Grand Lodge . Bro . H . Green , Prov . G . Sec , responded , as also did Bros . Col . Hartley and Matthewman . The toast of " The W . M . " was received with enthusiasm , and suitably responded to by Bro . Fretwell .
The Sister Lodges was a toast received with much honour , and it was responded to by the W . M . ' s present . Bro . Trevor , the newly-appointed Charity representative of the lodge , in felicitous terms , proposed " The Charities , " to which Bro . C . L . Mason responded . He earnestly
pleaded on behalf of the Boys' School , which he said had been heartily recognised . The changes had been brought about in a great measure by thc action of West Yorkshire , and he earnestly besought the brethren by their subscriptions to enable the Committee to carry on their great and noble work to a successful issue .
"Thc Visiting Brethren called forth a cordial and fraternal speech from Bro . Auty , Acacia Lodge , Bradford , a Iodge founded on similar principles to those of Prudence Lodge . He expressed the hope that the coming year would be marked by an interchange of visits , a suggestion which was cordially received . Bros . Last , Rickards , and others also responded , wishing
every success to the lodge and its W . M . Bro . Fretwell then gave thc toast of " The Officers , " and expressed his belief that , aided by so capable a body of Masons as were his officers , his year of office promised to be a happy and successful one . It was six years that very night since the consecration of the lodge . Now an initiate
was W . M ., and with three exceptions all the oflicers were initiates , a good augury for future success . Each one of the officers suitably responded , all expressing affectionate regard for the newly-installed VV . M . The Tyler's toast brought this most successful meeting to a conclusion .
During the evening songs and recitations were given by Bros . Buckley , Organist ; T . Atkinson , S . W . j W . Storey , Fitton , Begbie Abbott , and others .

Leeds lodges , with one exception , were present , namely : Bros . E . Wales Smith , 2 S 9 ; Lawson , 304 ; Batt , 306 ; Cowbrough , 1042 ; Canon Bullock , P . P . G .
D . ; Tudor Trevor , P . M ., D . of C . j
