Reports Of Masonic Meetings.

they had very little money invested , and a considerable sum was urgently needed . The Benevolent Institution had 375 annuitants on the books , at a cost last year of £ 14 , 500 , and the account was considerably overdrawn . As showing the extent of the Masonic Charities it would be interesting to state the incomes of the several Charities from all sources , as given in their last statement of accounts .

The Benevolent Institution received £ 21 , 374 7 s . id . ; the Girls's School , £ 16 , 768 19 s . 6 d . —to which Sir H . Edwards munificently contributed no less than 1000 guineas ; and the Boys' School , £ 16 , 272 16 s . In addition to the regular work of these three Charities , the Board of Benevolence , whose object was the relief of cases of a temporary character , and who gave assistance in cases of emergency

in grants varying in amount , according to the circumstances of the claimant , up to 40 guineas , had received funds to the amount of £ 10 , 153 . The total income of these several funds reached the sum of £ 64 , 567 2 S . 7 d ., which gave them an enormous power for the relief of their distressed brethren and their families , and was the means of conferring an incalculable amount of good . In conclusion

the speaker expressed considerable dissatisfaction with the manner in which local cases were treated by the Charity Committee of the province . Bro . Mursell , also responding to the toast of "The Charities , " said the office of Steward had given him exceptional opportunities for seeing the immense benefits conferred by the manner in which the funds were

disbursed . He felt himself specially indebted to Bro . Barfield —whose services he was afraid he could not hope to equal —and the brethren of the Londesborough Lodge , for the generous assistance they had afforded on several occasions . The brethren present would be pleased to know that the collection that had just been made in that room amounted

to £ 2 5 s . Bro . Brannon proposed "The Secretary and Officers of the Lodge , " which , after a song by the VV . M ., Bro . Manners , was responded to by Bros . Mursell , Rutland , Leftwich , Cullingford , Taylor , Perry , Roberton , and Young . After the Tyler's toast a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close with songs by Bros . Roberton , Poland , Leftwich , Cullingford , and others .

We cannot speak too highly of the manner in which this comparatively young Mason did his work , and upon so short a notice , for it was only at the last hour that Bro . Major Penrice was compelled to re-

Iinquish the honour of performing the ceremony and entrusted it in the hands of Bro . Bignold . We congratulate Bro . Bignold upon his success , and trust that the G . A . O . T . Green were then initiated into the mysteries and privileges of ancient Freemasonry by Bro . C . R . Gilman , P . M ., who performed the ceremony in a highly

efficient manner . " Hearty good wishes " having been given by the visiting brethren , the lodge was duly closed with peace and harmony . The brethren then adjourned to a most recherche banquet , at the conclusion of which the usual loyal , Masonic , and general toasts were given and acknowledged . During the proceedings of the lodge business it was

announced that the brethren had been pleased to subscribe for , and present to , their late Secretary , Bro . Chas . Cubitt , P . M ., P . P . G . R ., who had removed from the city , with a very handsome Past Master's jewel—manufactured by Bro . George Kenning—for his zeal and assiduity in carrying on the affairs of the lodge whilst holding that office . Bro . Cubitt was unavoidably absent ; but a letter from him was

read , thanking the brethren for their kindness , and regretting his absence . We congratulate Bro . Harry Bullard upon his retirement , not only for his successful year of office , but also upon his being elected as a representative of his native city . Bro . Bullard has served the office of Sheriff , and was twice appointed to the office of fllayor of Norwich . He lias ever

been ready to respond to the calls of Charity , and has zealously performed any duties which his fellow citizens have thought fit to throw upon him . We trust the G . A . O . T . U . may be pleased to prolong his life , and give him the prosperity which he so richly deserves .

SOUTHAMPTON . —Royal Gloucester Lodge ( No . 130 ) . —Bro . S . Clarke , the retiring S . W ., was on Thursday , the 14 th inst ., installed as the VV . Economy Lodge at Winchester and the lodges in Southampton and the immediate neighbourhood . The newl yinstalled VV . M . subsequently invested the officers for the year as follows : Bros . T . , Penny and H . Abraham , Stwds . ; Biggs , Tyler ; and Vare and Harrington , Asst . Tylers . Following the installation a hearty vote of thanks was awarded to Bro . Dunlop , P . M ., for his impressive service , and a similar vote , with a P . M . 's jewel , was tendered to the retiring Master , Bro . Dartnall , for his year's efforts . Subsequently Bro . las . Cole , P . M ., on behalf ot Bro .

Dunlop , asked the lodge's acceptance of his life-size halflength portrait in oil , to be added to the portraits of other Masonic worthies which adorn the lodge . Bro . Cole stated that the gift arose out of a suggestion , made at his installation several years ago by Bro . Dunlop , that , as Senior Past Master of the lodge , he should allow his portrait to be added to others which hang on the walls . Bro . Dunlop had

been a Mason since 1 S 42 , obtained provincial rank in 1 S 46 , and was W . M . of the Royal Gloucester Lodge so long since as 1 S 48 , and he ( Bro . Cole ) thought it spoke volumes for Masonry and the true spirit of brotherhood it inculcated , that at this distance of time Bro . Dunlop should be found amongst his brethren , as opportunity offered , to encourage them by his presence and to afford them the assistance of

his experience . The picture was cordially accepted by Bro . T . P . Payne , the next Senior Past Master , speaking on behalf of the lodge , and a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Bro . Dunlop for his present , which was unveiled as it hung on the wall amid general cheering . The brethren subsequently partook of their annual dinner , which was provided by Bro . Dartnall .

and Bro . Downing were initiated on the same night , and now Bro . Downing is Bro . Mack ' s immediate successor as W . M . The volume given by Bro . Mack therefore presents on the first page the names of both the brothers as initiates , and on the last one appears as W . M . and the other W . M .

elect , a perfectly unique coincidence . The'lodge having been closed , the brethren adjourned to the Red Lion Hotel , where an admirably appointed banquet was provided .

M ., P . P . G . R ., who had removed from the city , with a very handsome Past Master's jewel—manufactured by Bro . read , thanking the brethren for their kindness , and regretting his absence . We congratulate Bro . Harry Bullard upon his retirement , not only for his successful year of office , but also upon his being elected as a representative of his native city . Bro . Bullard has served the office of Sheriff , and was twice appointed to the office of fllayor of Norwich . He lias ever
