Mark lodges ( one also in abeyance ); but the membership is not equal to the chapters . The particulars are numerous and interesting that Bro . Edwards gives as to all the Degress worked in the province , and we congratulate him on the issne of the sixth of his most useful series of Calendars .

"THE FREEMASONS' CALENDAR , DERBYSHIRE , 1 SS 7 . " The Prov . Grand Secretary of Derbyshire , Bro . W . Naylor , is evidently determined that his calendar shall keep pace with the others which are being improved from year to year . The present issue is by far the best of the twelve published for the province , ancl is not easy to beat , either for

the excellence of its arrangement , the completeness of its lists , or its respects typographical features . It looks , and reads , well . The R . W . Bro . the Marquis of Hartington , M . P ., as Prov . Grand Master , presides over twenty-one odges ( one , however , not yet consecrated ) , having 973 members , as compared with 9 62 in 1 SS 6 edition . As Grand Superintendent , his lordship has six R . A . chapters under

his rule , with 149 members . There are four Mark lodges in the county , which is incorporated with Leicestershire and Northamptonshire , as we mentioned when reviewing the calendar for Leicester , the members for these four lodges mustering to the number of 126 . We suggest that the years of service should be added to the names of Past Masters of each Iodge , and also the provincial rank

of each ( if any ) , as so many editors now do , arid thus increase the value of the calendar considerably for the purposes of the Provincial Grand Master and his advisers . If the space is too limited for that , we think it would be better to insert such particulars , and let the calendar portion be omitted . The " Masonic Notes" appended by Bro . Naylor form a useful guide for the Masters and Secretaries of lodges , and were they duly attended to we feel assured

that his labours as Prov . Grand Secretary would be considerably lightened . We are pleased to see that the list of the votes held in the Masonic Charities or Institutions , as also those for the " Mark Educational and Annuity Fund " are , for the first time , printed on consecutive pages , instead of on a folding sheet , as heretofore . For the former there are 1428 , carefully described and tabled , and for the Mark there are 226 .

722 ] THOMAS DUNKERLEY . I have to acknowledge the great courtesy and kindness of Bro . " F . L . E . J . " in responding to my notes of last week in sending the volume of "Freemasons' Magazine" of 1 793 . I have this day compared the engraving of Thomas Dunkerley in the magazine with the larger portrait now at Lodge 2 S 0 , Worcester . I find that both engravings are

by J- Jones , from a painting by I hos . Beach . I he portraits at Worcester is full length , sitting at the pedestal , with ' cushion ahd book open on it . The fronts of the pedestal has on it the P . M . 's problem , not the Master's jewel , as in use now . Thomas Dunkerley has on knee-breeches , buckles , and shoes . The upper part is precisely the same

as in the magazine—the same R . A . jewel , collar , and collar jewel , and the same coat , vest , and buttons . In fact , there is no question that the smaller oval engraving for the magazine is taken from the larger one above the pedestal . I again thank Bro . " F . L . E . J ., " and have returned his magazine by post .

LAMB SMITH . I should like to know if the original oil painting is in existence .

Annual Banquet Of The Logic Club Of Instruction.

ANNUAL BANQUET OF THE LOGIC CLUB OF INSTRUCTION .

The annual banquet of the Logic Club of Instruction was held on Sunday , the ioth inst ., at the Criterion . The chair was taken by the esteemed Preceptor , Bro . John Maclean , and amongst the members and guests present were Bros . Fitzgerald ( Hon . Sec ) , Cummings , Potter , Fleet , Stevens , Kirkcaldy , Groves , Barnett , Dr . Davis ,

Thomas , Lester , Allcorn , Milford , Matthews , Dr . Lloyd , Green ( Bombay ) , A . R . Rogers , Skinner , Greenaway , Andrew , Meredith Bath , Beveridge , Harris , Leavitt , VV . E . Chapman , Rowe , Kift , Charles Harbury , and others . In responding to the toast , "Prosperity to the Logic Club , " Bro . FITZGERALD said that he could congratulate thebrethren on a successful year , as they had now 112

names on the books . The Club had been founded for the purpose of affording Masonic instruction to those in need of it , and like the sands of the sea its members shifted with every tide and were to be found in all parts of the world . During the past year they had had 43 meetings with an aggregate attendance of 756 . He wished , however , to call especial attention to the Charitable Association formed in

connection with the Club four years back . To this members contributed a shilling at a time , and when the sum of five guineas vvas reached it was balloted for and the successful brother got a life membership in one of the Masonic Charities . In four years they had been able to contribute in this way no less than 385 guineas to the Charities . Bro . J MACLEAN , in responding to the toast of

"The Chairman , " said that one of the greatest pleasures of his life was to exercise the gifts that God had given him in imparting Masonic instruction . It vvas his aim to maintain the dignity and high importance of the Craft and to conduct their ceremonies in such a way as to command the respect of those whom he might style the comparatively

uninitiated . _ In course ol the evening a number of songs and recitations vvere given , amongst those contributing to the entertainment being Bros . John Maclean , J . D . Beveridge , Chas . Harbury , A . R . Rogers , W . E . Chapman , Leavitt , Harris , Kift , Davies , and others .

STOCKWELL LODGE ( No . 1339 ) . —This lodge held its installation meeting for 18 S 7 on Tuesday last at the Surrey Masonic Hall , Camberwell New-road , when Bro . H . J . Pain , a son of the well-known Bro . James Pain , one of the founders of the lodge , was installed Master of the Iodge for the ensuing twelve months . The lodge vvas opened by Bro . Herbert Moss , VV . M ., vvho proceeded with

the business of the day , which comprised the balloting for and initiating Mr . Louis Francois Godard , the initiation of Mr . Leopold Franken , and the passing of Bro . Gomm . The work was performed by Bro . Moss vvith his customary skill , and at its conclusion Bro . Moss vacated the chair in favour of Bro . A . E . Frances , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D ., the Secretary of the lodge , vvho vvas the Installing Officer of

the day . Having addressed the lodge on the subject of the installation of Masters and obligated the candidate for the Master's chair , Bro . Frances requested all present except Installed Masters to retire , and when they had done so , proceeded to formally open a Board of Installed Masters , a ceremony very " rarely performed in detail , and not until this had been done

vvas the W . M . elect re-admitted to the lodge room , and there in the presence of the Board of Installed Masters he vvas again obligated and formally installed into the chair of K . S . according to ancient custom , and was saluted and congratulated by the Masters present . The rest of the brethren vvere then re-admitted , when Bro . Pain vvas proclaimed and saluted in the Three Degrees .

The newly-installed W . M . then proceeded to invest his officers as follows : Bros . Herbert Moss , I . P . M . ; A . G . Boswell , S . W . ; G . Myers , J . W . ; James Pain , P . M ., Treas . ; A . E . Frances , P . M ., Sec ; R . J . Cullen , S . D . ; H . Tyrer , J . D . ; J . Pollard , I . G . ; R . Templeman , P . M ., D . C ; E . Horsey , A . D . C ; and A . Bowers , Steward . Bro . Frances then delivered the three addresses to the

Masters , Wardens , and lay members of the lodge in his usual fluent and effective style . A vote of thanks to the W . M . tor presenting his banner to the lodge was ordered to be recorded on the minutes . The newly-installed W . M . then rose and said his first duty vvas a very becoming one . In his position of Master of the lodge he had to ask Bro . Moss to accept a Past Master ' s jewel . The lodge had

been peculiarly happy in the selection of its Masters , but he thought that they had never had a Master so popular , so well up in his work , and so beloved as Bro . Moss . It therefore gave him great pleasure to ask Bro . Moss to accept that jewel vvith the " Hearty good wishes" of the

brethren . Bro . Moss thanked the brethren very much for that kind token of their appreciation of his services . It would give him great pleasure to wear it , and it would remind him of many pleasant incidents of his year of office as W . M . of the Stockwell Lodge . There were a large number of visitors present at the

Evans , VV . M . 1922 ; Arthur Bull , 1707 ; and E . C . Massey . After the banquet , the usual loyal and Masonic toasts were heartily given , and as heartily responded to .

In proposing "The Health of the Grand Officers , Present and Past , " the VV . M . said they had with them on that occasion the Grand Treasurer elect , vvho vvas the only Grand Officer which the Blue lodges had the privilege of electing . The Blue lodges had elected Bro . Eve by an overwhelming majority . He vvas not vain enough to think that Bro . Eve came there to do him honour , but it vvas gratifying to find

that the Grand Treasurer had honoured the Stockwell Lodge by his presence . Bro . Eve , in reply , said that all that the W . M . had said of the Grand Officers of the Grand Lodge of England vvas not too much for him to say in respect of those brethren . They were deserving of all his encomiums , and all the thanks of the brethren present . They discharged their

duties , he believed , fairly , and faithfully , and well , and he thought , looking at the list of Grand Officers , it must be admitted that his Royal Highness had made a grand selection . The selection vvas difficult to make because there vvere so many deserving brethren . He ( Bro Eve ) thought that the W . M . had gone a little beyond the stiict line in calling upon him to respond to that toast , as . although

elected , he had not yet been invested with his office , which he felt to be the most honourable that any brother could desire to attain . To be elected by the thousands , he was going to say hundreds of thousands , of brethren over whom the Grand Master swayed his sceptre , vvas an honour vvhich he last year had no thought of attaining . He had to thank the brethren present for contributing in no small

degree to that result , and he should be wanting in love of Freemasonry if he did not endeavour to discharge the duties of his office vvith efficiency and zeal , and in such a way as would reflect credit on the choice the brethren had made . _ He was not sure that in one view the duties did not outweigh the honour , because the Grand Officer was bound so to act as to show that Freemasonry vvas something more

than a mere name ; he felt that 1 * reemasonry had a great work before it : it had done a great deal in the past , and it had got still greater things to do in the future . Bro . Eve concluded by thanking the brethren of the lodge for the way in vvhich he had been received by them . Bro . Frances proposed "The Health of the Worshipful Master , " who , he said , had been elected by the unanimous

vote of the lodge , and , considering that Bro . H . J . Pain vvas a son of Bro . Past Master James Pain , the Treasurer and one of the founders of the lodge , the duty of proposing his health vvas a double pleasure . Their newly-installed Master vvas a child of the lodge ; he had been initiated in it , and had gone through all the offices . Bro . Pain vvas a thorough good worker—was one of his ( Bro . Frances' )

pupils . No brother since Bro . Hammerton took the chair but had been a thoroughly good working Mason , and hc vvas sure that Bro . Pain would do vvhat his predecessors had done—leave a good reputation behind him . Bro . Frances concluded by apologising for the manner of his speech , vvhich must fall flat after that of Bro . Eve , who , he said , must have learned his eloquence in paradise , and practised

it ever since . Bro . Pain , W . M ., in responding , said that he would not detain them vvith a long speech ; but simply and heartily thanked them for the kind manner in which his health had been proposed by Bro . Frances and received by the brethren . Exactly seven years ago , to the day , he was made a Master Mason , at which time he had no expectation of becoming the Master of the lodge ; but as they had placed him in

that position , he would strive to leave the lodge in the same good repute as that in which he had received the charge of it . He would do all he could to promote the interests of the Iodge . The list of toasts included " The Health of the Visitors " ( for which Bro . Binckes , among others , responded ) , " The Past Masters , " and "The Officers of the Lodge , " which vvere all duly honoured before the Tyler ' s toast brought thc proceedings to a close .

LANGTON LODGE ( No . 1 * 573 ) . —The installation meeting of this lodge was held on Wednesday , the 20 th inst ., at the Holborn Viaduct Hotel . The chair was occupied by Bro . T . C . Royle , W . M ., and there were also present Bros . G . Bartholomew , S . W . ; Owen Spearing , J . W . ; J . Langton , P . M ., Treas . ; R . Clay Sudlow , P . P . S . G . D . Kent , Sec . ; B . J . Loid , I . Oates , 2096 ; W . Hall , 181 ; A . Thomas , W i

H . Schartau , Franklin Clive , and W . W . Lee , 1897 . The lodge vvas opened in due form and the minutes read and confirmed , after vvhich Bro . Robert Beldam vvas raised to the Sublime Degree of a Master Mason . Bro . Gilbert Bartholomew , S . W ., vvas then presented as W . M . elect , and vvas duly installed into the chair according to ancient custom . The newly-installed W . M . appointed and invested the following officers : Bros . Owen Snearinr ? . S . VV . J

R . Clay Sudlow , P . M ., P . P . S . G . D . Kent , J . W . ; Joseph Langton , P . M ., Treas . ; A . Adams , J . D . ; J . White , I . G . ; and Rowe , Tyler . Bros . J . G . Langton , P . M ., Sec , and F . Howard , S . D ., being unavoidably absent , their investiture was postponed . The usual addresses were then delivered by the Installing Master , Bro . Royle , I . P . M-, * an impressive manner . The report of the Audit Committee , showing a substantial balance to the credit of thc lodge ,

722 ] THOMAS DUNKERLEY . I have to acknowledge the great courtesy and kindness of Bro . " F . L . E . J .
