BRO . ALFRED MEADOWS , M . D ., P . G . D . Sincere regret will be felt everywhere at the news of the unexpected death of Bro . Alfred Meadows , M . D ., Past Grand Deacon of the Grand Lodge , and Past Grand Sivord Bearer of the Supreme Grand Chapter of England . As a surgeon , and especially in the department of obstetrics , to which he had devoted the chief part of his attention ancl
in which he had attained a rare eminence , the death of our respected brother vvill be recognised as a most serious loss , while in the social circle , in vvhich it had been given to him to win a degree of popularity such as seldom falls to the lot of any man , it vvill be long ere vve shall meet his equal . In his capacity of Freemason , it is no mere figure 0 f speech to say that he vvas among the most capable and
< renial brethren of the day , and as every one of us rejoiced when two years since H . R . H . the Grand Master was p leased to confer upon him the honour of the purple , so novv the grief will be as general that Grand Lodge has lost thus suddenly one of its ablest and most prominent members . As regards the details of his career , they are few but impressive . Bro . Meadows was initiated in the
Time Immemorial Royal Somerset House and Inverness Lodge , No . 4 , in 1 S 69 , and in 1876 vvas e ' ected to the chair of Worshipful Master , and at the same time represented it on the Board of Grand Stewards . In 1 S 77 he was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree in the Moira Chapter , No . 92 , and installed its First Principal in 1 S 81 , his honours in these constituent blanches of regular Masonry culminating in 1 SS 5 ,
when he vvas appointed and invested Senior Grand Deacon in the United Grand Lodge and Grand Sword Bearer in Supreme Grand Chapter . " He vvas also founder and present W . Master of the University of London Lodge , No . 2033 , and a joining member of Drury Lane Lodge , No . 2127 . In 1 SS 4 he was advanced to the Mark in the Bon Accord Lodge , and vvas installed first W . M . of the Chiswick
Lodge , No . 357 , in 18 S 5 . He had also been perfected Rose Croix in the A . and A . Rite ; while as regards our Institutions , he had qualified as Life Governor of , and served as , Festival Steward for all three of them . Had it pleased the Great Architect to prolong his years , there are grounds for assuming that his services to the Craft in its extra-constitutional branches and in relation to its Charities would have resulted in the former case in the bestowal of
greater honours upon himself , and in the latter in support increasingly beneficial to them . However , these things are novv beyond the possibility of achievement , ar . d the sad duty devolves on us of offering to his relatives , friends , and brethren generally our sincere tribute of respect to the memory of his eminent professional abilities as well as cf his many virtues , both Masonic and social . The funeral will take place at Colnbrook to-morrow ( Saturday ) , and will be fully recorded in our columns next week .
BRO . ALFRED RICHARDS , P . G . D . D . C A similar loss has been sustained through the death of Bro . Alfred Richards , P . G . D . D . C , whose association vvith the Craft had been of longer standing than that of his brother Grand Officer , but who , like him , had laboured in his special sphere and not unsuccessfully , to promote the
interests of Freemasonry . The deceased was initiated in the St . Andrews Lodge , No . 231 , on the 4 th April , 1850 , and in 1858 vvas elected to the chair of W . M . He vvas likewise a Royal Arch Mason , and in 1 SS 4 , after a period of upwards of 30 years of continuous and valuable service vvas rewarded both in Craft and Arch by appointment to Grand honours , the office of Grand Deputy Director ot Ceremonies being conferred upon him in the United Grand
Lodge , and that of 2 nd Grand Standard Bearer in the Supreme Grand Chapter . He was not a Mark Mason , but had been received into the Ancient and Accepted Rite , in vvhich he had attained to the 31 ° , and vvas Life Governor and Past Festival Steward of both the Masonic Schools . The death of a veteran of such high standing as the late Bro . A . Richards is greatly to be deplored , and to his relations and friends both within and outside Masonry we offer the tribute of our most respectful sympathy .
BRO . VV . H . NANKIVELL , W . M . No . 99 6 . The greatest sympathy is felt by the brethren of East Dereham and the adjoining towns , vvith Mrs . ^ Nankivell and her numerous family of ten children , at the terrible loss they have just sustained through the death of Bro . W . H . Nankivell , vvho at the time vvas W . Master of the Sondes LodgeNo . 99 6 East Dereham . At the funeral
, , there was a very numerous attendance of thebrethren , and among the numerous wreaths , vvhich almost concealed the coffin from view , vvas a very handsome one from the members of his lodge . Those present included Bros . A . Manningham , P . M . ; VV . H . Tench , P . M . ; William Smith , P . M ., and acting Secretary ; H . B . Vincent , S . W . j W . R . H . Anderson . I . W .: H . Havlock . S . D .: T . Bloomfield ,
J * - ; D . H . Dolman , I . G . ; H . Smith , Tyler ; George Baston , A . J . Day , J . Allen , and H . Lambert , all of Lodge No . 99 G ; Sidney Smith , W . M ., and S . J . Cannan , P . M ., secretary of the Walpole Lodge , No . 1500 , Norwich ; C . y- Horsley , W . M . No . 1114 , Fakenham ; and J . Blun derfield , P . M ., Secretary Doric Lodge , No . 1193 , VVymondham . By dispensation from the D . P . G . M ., the brethren tended in full regalia .
LIEUT .-COL . J . TANNER DAVY , PROV . G . MARK MASTER DEVONSHIRE . We have also to record the sudden death of Bro . Lieut .-= ?' . *• J- Tanner Davy , Prov . G . Mark Master of Devonshire . "is sad event occurred on Tuesday with terrible suddenness , ] Ust after our respected brother entered the Devon
r"' kxeter Savings Bank , Exeter , of which he was a trustee . Medical assistance vvas at once summoned , but in *' ew minutrs he expire'd , the cause of death being afterwards ceitified by Dr . Frazer , his medical adviser , as Vv " i 5 keen < * ue t 0 suclden failure of the heart's action . Ve nope to give full particulars next week .

brilliantly successful play vvill have reached its 300 th representation on Wednesday next , April 27 th . In writing of long runs we would remind our readers that the Vaudeville Theatre has enjoyed some of the longest runs on record . "The Two Roses" ran for 490 nights , "The School for Scandal" 450 nights , " Our Boys " 1362 nights ( never yet equalled ) , "Confusion" 457 nights , and "Sophia" ( on
Wednesday next ) , 300 . In round numbers these figures represent five plays in about nine years , or an average of over 600 representations of each piece . This fact is probably unparalleled in the world ' s history of theatrical enterprise . Bro . F . Leslie is announced to appear in a morning performance at the Gaiety on Monday next , in a new and original comedy-drama of domestic interest ,
entitled "Twice Married" by Clement O'Neill and Henry Sylvester . This is breaking fresh ground , and vve shall be curious to see how one who has built up his reputation in burlesque , is likely to succeed in comedy-drama . Bro . Leslie has shown such versatality even in burlesque that vve should not be surprised at his making a great hit in another role . Bro . Leslie will be supported by Mr . E . D . Ward ,
Mr . G . Shelton , Mr . Percy Lyndal , Mr . W . T . Elworthy , Mr . Chas . Wilson , Miss H . Lindley , Miss Lilian Gillmore , and Miss Cicely Richards . Among the most attractive exhibits at the Sportsman ' s Exhibition , at Olympia , is the collection of guns , rifles , and pistols on view at Mr . Charles Lancaster's stand ( No . 70 ) . Among them are the latest and best of the
many inventions of this well-known gunmaker , the most prominent being his four-barrel B . L . hammerless guns and rifles , and his patent hammerless pistols . To the former of these some of our best sportsmen have borne willing testimony , while the latter have given proof of their quality during the Egyptian and Burmese campaigns . There are likewise some very beautiful specimens of ivory and gilt
presentation pistols , such as have been supplied to the Sultan and to our government , but the chief attraction of all is , undoubtedly , the case containing the various First Class Prizes and Medals , seventeen in number , which have at different exhibitions been awarded to Mr . Lancaster for his improvements in gun and pistol making . At the Hotel Metropole on Monday , Bro . and
Mrs . W . A . Higgs , of VVillenhall Park , Barnet , entertained a party of friends , numbering more than 150 , in celebration of the coming of age of their eldest son , William Norman . The guests began to arrive shortly after eight o'clock , being received by the host and hostess , and other members oi the family . Dancing vvas then commenced with spirit , and kept up vvith but brief intervals to nearly
four o ' clock . At midnight supper of a most elegant character vvas served in the magnificently-furnished diningroom . In the course of a few words Bro . Higgs bade a hearty welcome to his guests , expressing the hope that the evening vvas proving an enjoyable one . The toast of the evening , that of "William Norman Higgs , " was proposed
by an old friend of the family , and in acknowledging the compliment , Mr . Norman Higgs , in a few well chosen words , thanked the guests for their kindness . The other toasts were those of " Mr . and Mrs . Higgs , " and "The Ladies , " vvhich were briefly given and responded to , after which a return was made to the ball-room , where dancing was recommenced and continued till an early hour the next morning ,

James Stevens delivered his lecture on "Ritual and Ceremonial of the Symbolic Degrees" to a large and representative assemblage of bretren connected vvith the several lodges in Norwich , on Monday evening last . VVe shall report this interesting meeting more fully
in our next impression . Visitors to the Sportsman Exhibition , now in progress at Olympia , will find that among the innumerable exhibits on view that of the firm of Mason and Co ., whose specialities of every kind are much appreciated , is by no means the least interesting , the meat lozenges , for vvhich this house is justly famous , being greatly valued by hunting
men and others vvho take part habitually in field sports . It is with regret we have to announce the death , on the ioth inst ., of Bro . Felix Thomas , of the St . Kew Lodge , No . 1222 , Weston-super-Mare , at the earl y age of 4 6 years . Bro . Thomas's health had been failing for some
time past , but his decease was quite unexpected , and was received vvith general sorrow among his fellow-townsmen , and especially by his Masonic brethren , who were present at the funeral , on the 14 th instant , in considerable numbers , and acted as a kind of guard of honour from the cemetery chape ! to the grave .
